Finkenrath Leads The Final 23 in the 2015 APPT Manila Main Event

Level 20 : 6,000/12,000, 1,000 ante
Iona Finkenrath

Day 2 of the 2015 PokerStars.net APPT Season 9 Manila Main Event — a tournament that attracted 585 entrants and created a prize pool of ₱25,535,250 — saw 175 players return to action at the City of Dreams Grand Ballroom in Manila, Philippines on Saturday with the 72-player money bubble in sight.

After seven hours of play, the money bubble would burst at the expense of Hsein Ching Feng and when it was all said and done, just 23 remained in the hunt for the title and ₱6,016,250 first-place prize. German Iona Finkenrath grabbed the overnight lead as the only player over one million in chips riding a wave of good cards when he had to show, and even better play when he didn't, on the way to bagging 1,084,000 chips.

PokerStars Team Pro Vivian Im flirted with the chip lead nearing the bubble, but could not hold on to her big stack, busting in the money. Others to fall on Day 2 but cashing included Norwegian Svein Jorgen Kristensen, defending champ Thanh Ha Duong, and start-of-day chip leader Dong Il Kim.

In the meantime, Poker King Club President and Asian high-stakes legend Winfred Yu was putting together one of those chip-and-a-chair stories of poker lore. After firing two bullets on Day 1a, Yu bagged under 20,000 in chips. He tried to better that on Day 1b, but failed and was forced to bring less than a Day 1 starting stack with him into play today.

Yu gained some early momentum, built a stack, and by the time they pushed past the money bubble and beyond, he had moved into the chip lead on over 900,000 busting players left and right. He'll return for Day 3 Sunday with 983,000, good for second on the leader board and a legitimate shot at adding to his $1,369,045 in career tournament earnings.

Seung Soo Jeon, who finished 44th in this event last year has already bettered that and will come back stacked on the final day looking to improve on what is already a solid story of redemption.

2013 World Series of Poker Asia-Pacific bracelet winner Aaron Lim and 2015 WSOP $3,000 No-Limit Hold'em fifth-place finisher Terry Fan will also come in with solid chances after putting together resilient Day 2 performances.

Viviam Im's Kings Get Cracked

Level 19 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Vivian Im
Vivian Im

In the very last hand of the level, Vivian Im three-bet to 62,000 after having previously three-bet shoved and enforced a fold just minutes ago. Mital Chandihok four-bet shoved for around 400,000 with the bigger stack, but the Team PokerStars Pro snap-called for what looked like 300,000 with the {K-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}.

Chandihok was in bad shape with the {A-Hearts}{8-Hearts} but found some options on the {3-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} flop. He was asking for an eight before the dealer burned and turned the {4-Diamonds}. A cruel {5-Clubs} river gave Chandihok a straight and Im the 28th place.

Two Former APPT Champions Remain

Level 18 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Chane Kampanatsanyakorn

Seung Soo Jeon opened the action with a raise from the cutoff and APPT8 Seoul champion Chane Kampanatsanyakorn moved all in for 108,000 out of the small blind. Mike Kim in the big blind just called and Jeon let go.

Kampanatsanyakorn: {6-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}
Kim: {J-Hearts}{J-Spades}

The board ran out {5-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}{8-Spades} and the Thai was sent to the rail in 34th place, leaving behind two former APPT champions in PokerStars Team Pro Vivian Im and Aaron Lim.

The Defending Champion is Gone

Level 18 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Thanh Ha Duong
Thanh Ha Duong

Takuya Yamashita has had a decent last half an hour, coming from a half-average stack to now just over the average. The cards had already been rushed away and defending champion Thanh Ha Duong had the button in front of him but no chips anymore, biting into a sandwich.

According to the table, the Japanese min-raised from middle position and Duong three-bet shoved out of the blinds for what looked like 15 big blinds. Yamashita wasted little time to make the call with pocket kings and the Vietnamese's pocket sevens found no help on a dry board.

Yu Gets There, Gets Paid

Level 18 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Winfred Yu
Winfred Yu

Winfred Yu called a 16,000 chip open from Ying Lin Chua on the button and they went heads-up to a {6-Spades}{4-Hearts}{2-Spades} flop.

Chua continued for 26,000 and Yu called, sending them to the {8-Clubs} turn. Chua tapped the table with a check, allowing Yu to take the lead with a 50,000-chip bet. Chua called and the river came the {j-Spades}.

Chua checked again, almost beating Yu to the pot with a call when he fired out 110,000. Yu turned over {q-Spades}{10-Spades} for the rivered flush. Chua mucked, having been left relatively short as Yu climbed up to 750,000 and into the chip lead.

Bubble Bursts with Feng's Elimination

Level 16 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Hsein Ching Feng
Hsein Ching Feng

There were two all in and a call at the same time. Hsein Ching Feng had shoved all in for less than eight big blinds from the hijack and Chen-an Lin made the call from two seats over. Everyone else folded and once the remaining tables were completed, this table was picked first to go into the showdown.

Feng: {9-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}
Lin: {Q-Spades}{Q-Hearts}

The {Q-Clubs} appeared right in the window and Feng grabbed his backbag, already prepared to leave the table. The rest of the board ran out {5-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} and the bubble had definitely burst.

KC Wong was all in for 193,000 on a flop of {J-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}{6-Clubs} while holding {6-Diamonds}{6-Hearts} for bottom set. Azusa Maeda made the call with the {Q-Hearts}{J-Hearts} for top two pair, but the {9-Spades} turn and {10-Spades} river both bricked to let Wong double up.

The Mad Norwegian Strikes Again

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Svein-Jorgen Kristensen
Svein-Jorgen Kristensen

Svein Jorgen Kristensen called a min-raise from the small blind going three-handed to a {k-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} flop.

He checked, Seonghwan Ahn led for 8,500 and Jiaxing Wang bumped it to 17,000. Kristensen then pulled the three-bet check-raise out of his bag of tricks, making it a whopping 150,000.

After a minute or two in the tank, Ahn angrily slammed the rest of his stack on the felt across the line, which amounted to just a few thousand more. Wang folded and Kristensen called.

"I have a three," he said, showing {10-Clubs}{3-Clubs}.

Anh had {a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs} and was drawing pretty thin, busting after the {5-Diamonds} turn and {a-Clubs} river made him two pair.

The swingy Kristensen had fallen below 300,000 recently, but busting Anh has him pushing 400,000 now as the money bubble looms.

End of Story for Huang

Bryan Huang
Bryan Huang

In a battle of the blinds, PokerStars Team Pro Bryan Huang got the remainder of his 25 big blind stack in preflop out of the big blind with the {A-Clubs}{K-Clubs}. Terry Gonzaga made the call with {J-Hearts}{J-Clubs} and both players shook hands after a flop of {J-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}. Technically it was not over yet, but the {9-Diamonds} turn locked up the hand for Gonzaga and made the {6-Diamonds} river meaningless.

Olsson Gets All of Ng

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Sam Ng
Sam Ng

The wild ride of Sam Ng has come to an end, he just knocked out Sam Ng. The latter had previously tried to bluff the Swede on a {4-}{4-}{4-}{Q-}{2-} board with the {A-}{3-} but his big bet was called by Olsson with {K-}{Q-}. And just now Ng was at it again, all in for his last 25 big blinds preflop with the {A-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}.

Olsson looked him up with the {J-Spades}{J-Clubs} and the board ran out {K-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{8-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}.

Another bigger stack on that table is Iona Christopher Finkenrath in seat one.

Im Snatches the Lead

Level 13 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Vivian Im
Vivian Im

PokerStars Team Pro Vivian Im has grabbed hold of the chip lead after running over Dong Il Kim in a huge pot.

The hand began with Im raising it up to 4,300 and a third player three-betting to 10,600. Kim cold called before Im four-bet, making it 38,000. The raiser folded, but Kim made the call, going heads-up with Im to a {j-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{4-Spades} flop.

Im c-bet, making it 29,000, and Kim made the call. They both checked the {2-Clubs} turn, but when the {4-Diamonds} river came down, Im fired again, making it 54,500. Kim decided to give up, handing Im a pot that pushed her stack up to just under 400,000.
