APPT Main Event
Day 1a Started
For the second year in a row, the PokerStars Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) returns to the Kingdom of Cambodia. The festival at the five-star NagaWorld Integrated Resort in the heart of Phnom Penh already kicked off on May 5, 2023, and is set to conclude on Monday, May 15, with the conclusion of the 2023 APPT Cambodia Main Event, among other tournaments.
Highlight on the schedule is the $1,500 Main Event, which features three starting days for the first time and a guarantee of $400,000. Each of the three flight allows for a single re-entry and all those players who already qualified for Day 2 cannot enter any of the subsequent starting days in order to accumulate an even larger stack.
Defending champion is Canada's Alexander Puchalski, who came out on top of a 378-entry strong field after defeating India's Akshay Kapoor in heads-up. Notable finalists in November 2022 were Yu-Chung "Nevan" Chang, Markus Garberg, and Michael Soyza. The latter won't make the trip to Phnom Penh this time, as he is busy during the latest Triton Poker stop in Northern Cyprus.
All participants receive 30,000 in chips and the first two regular starting days on May 12 and 13 feature levels of 40 minutes each, while the final turbo heat 1c has a shortened level duration of just 20 minutes. Approximately 15% of the field will be paid and the penultimate tournament Day on May 14 then plays down to the nine-handed final table. As of then, a 30-second shot clock will be introduced as well.
Other tournaments to look out for include a $550 Mystery Bounty Event, a $10,000 Super High Roller, the $350 NAGAWORLD Kickoff with a $50,000 guarantee, the $800 APPT National, and a $2,000 Mini High Roller.
The PokerNews live reporting team will be on the floor in the grand ballroom at Naga 1 to cover all the action from the $1,500 Main Event from start to finish.

With some 5,500 in the middle to the 5♣4♣2♣J♠ turn, Xianbing Zhang bet 4,000 out of the small blind. Feng Ji Chua called on the button to then face a larger bet worth 10,000 on the 3♦ river.
Chua sighed and folded, to which Zhang said "nice fold" before dragging in the pot.

The runner-up of the 2023 WPT Prime Cambodia Main Event accumulated several deep runs in Poker-Stars branded live events including the same venue here at NagaWorld. Bien Mai has already earned an APPT trophy during the stop and has also chipped up right away on Day 1a. During one of the latest showdown hands, his J♠10♠ turned a flush on the Q♠J♦4♠K♠5♥ board and got some value to send the player from Vietnam up on the leaderboard.

Picking up the action on the 9♥8♠7♦ flop, Mark Remnant bet 1,200 out of the small blind and Hyunkyou Park called from under the gun. Remnant bet again the A♣ turn for 2,200 to get raised by Park, who made it 6,200 to go. The Brit came along and both checked the 2♥ on the river.
Remnant tabled the A♠3♠ and that won the pot.

Heads-up to the J♥9♦3♥4♥ turn, Grant Gardner and Roland Kivi both invested what appeared to be 2,700 and that led them to the K♥ on the river. Gardner now checked and Kivi then bet 3,800. That brought a dry smile on the face of Gardner, who sigh-folded a couple of seconds later.
