Xie Leads The Field From Day 1a of The 2014 PokerStars.net APPT Macau Main Event

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Day 1a Chip Leader, Bo "Box" Xie
Day 1a Chip Leader, Bo "Box" Xie

The first of two starting days at the 2014 PokerStars.net APPT Macau Main Event ended with 87 of 212 players seeing Day 2. The day consisted of seven and a half hour-long levels, and Bo “Box” Xie emerged as the field's chip leader with 166,000 in chips.

Alvan Zheng, who led the field most of the day, finished just behind Xie with 151,400. Not far behind that you will find Jaswinder Suri with 149,500 to round out the top three.

The day saw plenty of familiar faces come out to play at the PokerStars LIVE poker room in the City of Dreams. Some of the most notable players moving on to Day 2 include Christian Haggart (65,200), Victorino Torres (50,000), Iori Yogo (37,500), Team PokerStars Pro Bryan Huang (31,300), Daniel Laidlaw (24,400), Akira Ohyama (18,800) and Kitty Kuo (18,000).

Probably the most famous player in the room today, Johnny Chan, will not be making Day 2 as he was eliminated when his flush draw failed to complete against Liu Xiao.

Some other players you might know that failed to advance are Oliver Gill, Ashley Warner, Dean Blatt, Sunny Jung, Percy Yung and Team PokerStars Pro Vivian Im.

Day 1b kicks off Thursday, again at 3 p.m. local time, with a bunch new faces including Team PokerStars Pros Raymond Wu and Celina Lin. Join PokerNews as we continue to bring you all the action as it happens. Until then, good night from the City of Dreams.

It Was A Quick Day for Chan

Level 5 : 200/400, 50 ante

We came to the table with a flop of {k-Clubs}{5-Spades}{10-Clubs} on the board and saw Johnny Chan calling the all in of Liu Xiao with less. Xiao turned over {a-Spades}{k-Spades} and said, "we're chopping". Chan shook his head, responded "flush draw" and showed {a-Clubs}{3-Clubs}.

Chan couldn't find any help in the {7-Diamonds} turn and the {5-Hearts} river. Xiao got up and went to shake Chan's hand. Chan was gracious in defeat and as he left, said he wanted to make it a quick day. Well, he got his wish.

Johnny Chan's In The House

There was a little murmur of excitement in the room as Johnny Chan made his way to his seat. He was cutting a little close with just about 10 minutes left to register for the day.

It's probably fair to say the players at Table 14 were not thrilled to see the 10-time bracelet winner take his seat. One of the most famous poker players ever, his accomplishments range from success on the felt to a realty TV show to being forever immortalized in film. You can bet a target will be on his back in hopes of making someone a good poker story.

Zheng Leads The Pack

Level 4 : 150/300, 25 ante
Alvan Zheng
Alvan Zheng

Walking around the room, we've noticed that one player has a stack nearing 100,000 in chips. That player is Alvan Zheng.

Zheng has had some impressive results in the past here in Macau, taking out the HK$20,000 No Limit Hold'em - $1,000,000 Guaranteed event during last years Macau Poker Cup series, before backing that up with a third place finish in 2013 Asia Championship of Poker (ACOP) Macau Main Event for HK$1,980,000 (US$255,338).

With such a good start today, Zheng will be hoping to make another deep run in this years event.

Vivian Im Has Taken Her Seat

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante
PokerStars Team Pro Vivian Im
PokerStars Team Pro Vivian Im

So far PokerStars Team Pro Vivian Im is the only member of Team Asia to take a seat in today's event. Macau has been good to Im this year with a 21st-place finish at the Macau Millions in March for HKD$ 22,000 and a 38th-place finish at The Macau Poker Cup Red Dragon for HKD$ 33,500. She obviously wants to do more than go deep in the event and is posed to capture the big prize. She will be up against a tough field that includes her partner, Kim Gap Young, who is also playing today.
