Docherty's House is Full

David Docherty
David Docherty
As we mentioned earlier, now that the super-short stacks have mostly flamed out of the tournament, the players have an average stack of 70 big blinds. That gives them some room for post-flop play. It was on the turn that we came to the table of David Docherty and Annica Ivert. The board showed {J-Spades} {8-Spades} {A-Spades} {4-Hearts}. After Ivert checked, Docherty reached for chips and made the price to see the river 33,500. Ivert made the call.

The river was a repeater -- the {8-Diamonds}. Ivert again checked. This time Docherty grabbed 65,000 chips and pushed them into the middle. Ivert took her time making her decision but did ultimately call. Docherty turned over {J-Clubs} {J-Hearts} for jacks full of eights. There were only two hands that could beat him. Ivert didn't have either.

Docherty continues to hang around. He's got 348,000 while Ivert, who came into the day with more than half a million chips and the chip lead, is down to 360,000.

Free Falling

Tom Pongrass
Tom Pongrass
Tom Pongrass was moved to a new table roughly 15 minutes ago. He probably wishes it had never happened. Since the move, Pongrass has doubled up three players. The latest beneficiary is Raymond Rahme. Pongrass bet 20,000 after the dealer spread a flop of {5-Spades} {3-Diamonds} {K-Clubs}. Rahme, in position, made the call.

The turn was the {A-Diamonds}. Pongrass quickly checked it to Rahme, who led out for 38,000. Pongrass called to a river card of {6-Clubs} and checked again. Rahme, with 81,500 left in his stack, moved all in. Pongrass made the call, then shook his head in disbelief when Rahme showed {6-Hearts} {6-Diamonds} for a rivered set of sixes.

Pongrass is down to 220,000 after having more than half a million chips a shot while ago.

Obrestad Starts the Long Climb Back

Annette Obrestad
Annette Obrestad
Annette Obrestad was in second chip position at the start of the day and has slowly sunk back to the pack as play has progressed. She was the beneficiary of a five-way pot a few moments ago. With 40,000 chips in the middle, the flop came down {A-Spades} {6-Diamonds} {2-Diamonds}. Action checked to Nhan Le, who made an exploratory bet of 13,000. That folded all players except Obrestad.

The turn came down {9-Spades}. Obrestad mixed things up by leading into Le on that seemingly harmless card for 27,000 chips. Le tanked, then made the call. The river was the {5-Clubs} and produced a bet of 70,500 from Obrestad. Le couldn't call again, choosing instead to fold his hand.

Shout Box Trivia, Part Two

Time for the second trivia question. Same details as before, but to refresh your memory:

The prize that's up for grabs is a seat in a $32+5 satellite tournament on PokerStars to be held at 6am local Melbourne time tomorrow morning. It has a guarantee to a final satellite tournament on Sunday ($500+30), with Sunday's final guaranteeing two prize packages worth approximately $7,800 each.

There's nothing fancy to the question this time:

At the 2008 Aussie Millions Poker Championship Main Event, who was the chip leader going into the TV Final Table?

The first person to post the correct answer in the Shout Box will win the seat into the $32+5 satellite. We'll post the answer and the winner's PokerNews screen name in the blog later in the day. The winner will be emailed via the email account he or she used to sign up their PokerNews account in order to be enrolled in the satellite.

Good luck!

Brett Murtagh Eliminated in 48th Place (AU$20,000)

Brett Murtagh - 48th place
Brett Murtagh - 48th place
Brett Murtagh has been eliminated in the hand of the tournament so far.

Our reporter caught the hand with the flop of {q-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}.First Noah Schwartz checked to Murtagh who moved in his final 89,000 chips. Kelly Kim, who was the other player to see the flop called Murtagh's all in.

Schwartz then proceeded to move all in himself for 253,000, covering Kim by just 24,000 chips. Kim understandably went into the tank, and then shocked the crowd who were expecting a fold, by calling.

The players tabled their cards:

Murtagh {k-Clubs}{k-Diamonds} for an overpair and flush draw.
Schwartz {2-Spades}{2-Clubs} for bottom set.
Kim {q-Clubs}{q-Spades} for top set.

Kim was in front but would need to dodge the flush outs for Murtagh in order to scoop the pot. The {8-Hearts} turn was all clear, and the case {q-Hearts} would see Kim make quads.

"Now we're back in the game" gloated Kim as he raked in a 600,000 chip pot. Schwartz was left with just 24,000. Murtagh was eliminated.

Schwartz would double back through shortly after and now sits at around 50,000.

Velipekka Pentinnen Eliminated in 47th Place (AU$20,000)

Velipekka Pentinnen - 47th Place
Velipekka Pentinnen - 47th Place
Tally another victim for David Docherty. He had a very easy decision after Velipekka Pentinnen moved all in preflop for 70,000 chips. Docherty looked down at {A-Hearts} {A-Clubs} and called. He was in great shape against Pentinnen's {A-Spades} {10-Diamonds}. The board ran out a very safe {J-Hearts} {7-Diamonds} {5-Spades} {Q-Spades} {8-Clubs} to send Pentinnen to the rail. He's part of the AU$20,000 club now, having doubled his buy-in for the 2009 Aussie Millions Main Event. Docherty is still in the hunt. He now has 405,000 chips.

Shout Box Trivia Answer

The question was:

At the 2008 Aussie Millions Poker Championship Main Event, who was the chip leader going into the TV Final Table?

The TV final table for 2008 was played seven-handed. When the field was down to eight players, the players were moved into the TV studio. They continued playing until one more player was knocked off. That player was Nico Behling. When all the chips were bagged and tagged,

Michael Chrisanthopoulos

had the chip lead going into the TV Final Table. Congratulations to "jcsydney" for being the first player to get that answer into the Shout Box (even if he did mis-spell it!). PokerNews will contact jcsydney and the previous trivia winner, PFUsqrl, to arrange entries into the satellite tournament.

Meanwhile, there's a poker tournament being played here!

Chronis Caps Comer

Chris Chronis has added some chips to his stack courtesy of Martin Comer. On a flop of {8-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} Comer fired 20,000, and Chronis made the call. The turn {5-Spades} saw Comer bet out 60,000 and again Chronis called. Comer put the brakes on at the river {9-Spades} and Chronis took full advantage firing 100,000. Comer thought for a moment before folding, leaving about 330,000 chips behind. Chronis then flashed {7-Spades}{7-Diamonds} and began scooping in the pot. Chronis moves up amongst the leaders at 660,000.

Chen Doubles; Comer Takes Another Hit

Comer pondering how to get things back on track
Andrew Chen has just doubled up via Martin Comer. With all the chips going in on a flop of {k-Clubs}{q-Clubs}{6-Diamonds} Chen was in good shape with his {k-Diamonds}{j-Clubs} leading Martin Comer's {q-Diamonds}{j-Spades}.

The board ran out turn {6-Spades} and river {6-Clubs}.

Chen moves up to 150,000. Comer who has been bleeding chips left and right, sits at 270,000.

David Paewai Eliminated in 46th Place (AU$20,000)

David Paewai may want a do-over. We guess he's going to spend quite a bit of time tonight thinking about how he played his final hand in the 2009 Aussie Millions Main Event. Paewai, sitting in the big blind, was one of three players to call a preflop raise by Clonie Gowen to 12,000. The other two were Annica Ivert and Zach Fellows.

Paewai was first to act after the flop came down {K-Clubs} {6-Hearts} {3-Spades}. He checked to Gowen, who made a half-pot continuation bet of 25,000. Ivert called and Fellows folded before Paewai check-raised to 75,000. That was enough to chase away Gowen, but not Ivert. She called again.

The turn fell {7-Spades}. Paewai had first action and decided to move all in for 130,000. Ivert couldn't call fast enough, tabling {6-Diamonds} {6-Spades} for a set of sixes. Paewai showed {K-Spades} {10-Hearts}, a hand that was drawing dead. He's off to collect AU$20,000 from the cage. Ivert is back over a half million in chips.
