The Beginning of the End

To the winner goes the bracelet.
To the winner goes the bracelet.
Two very long days of poker (which were really four very long days of poker) have thinned the herd here at the 2009 Aussie Millions Poker Championship Main Event. From a starting field of 681 runners, we are down to the final 85. 64 of these players will walk away with a minimum of AU$15,000. One of them will amass all of the chips and earn AU$2,000,000.

A champion won't be crowned today though. First we have to pop the money bubble. That should happen before dinner. From there the pace of play will pick up slightly. The ever-increasing blinds should apply enough pressure to thin the field to a much more manageable 35 by day's end.

The story of Day 2 was the play of two young women: Annica Ivert and Annette Obrestad. They start the day at the very top of the leaderboard. Absent catastrophe, both should easily make the money.

Our feature table today is a doozy. Seat at Table 10 are Team PokerNews player Luke Abolins, "Prince of Poker" Scotty Nguyen, Patrik Antonius, Omid Azadpeyma, Swedish player Michael Tureniec, local favorite Sam Khouiss, Andy Church and Damon Lum.

The bare-knuckle brawl kicks off in 30 minutes.

Double Up, Baby!

Luke Abolins raised to 5,200 from early position and Scotty Nguyen made the call.

They saw a flop of {6-Spades}{7-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds} and Abolins led for 7,000 with Nguyen making the call.

The turn was the {9-Clubs} and Abolins checked to Nguyen who bet out 11,000. Abolins then asked for a count of Nguyen's stack before check-raising all in. Nguyen made a quick call for his tournament life.

Abolins tabled {K-Spades}{K-Hearts} for an overpair, however Nguyen had flopped a set with his {7-Diamonds}{7-Spades}. The river landed the {8-Spades} and Nguyen doubles up to 149,000 much to the delight of his fans on the rail.

Meanwhile ChipMeUp.com users will be disappointed to now see Abolins on the short stack.

Luke Abolins Eliminated

Two Team PokerNews players started Day 3. Only one of them remains after the recent elimination of Luke Abolins. Abolins moved all in from the big blind for 20,600 after Sam Khouiss opened to 7,000. Khouiss made the call with {K-Diamonds} {10-Spades}, to the {A-Hearts} {Q-Hearts} of Abolins. The hand went to Khouiss on a board of {4-Spades} {k-Clubs} {7-Diamonds} {7-Spades} {5-Spades}. His kings and sevens were the best hand, moving him to 104,000.

Dodds Finds a Hand in His Range

Joel "Strong Play" Dodds is one of the locals still alive in today's field. His mates often tease him for seeming to only play aces. Thus no one was surprised when Dodds raised to 5,400 from the button, then called all in after the Nali "Iraqi Nick" Kaselias raised from the small blind to 35,200. Dodds showed {A-Clubs} {A-Diamonds} (of course!) against Kaselias' {K-Diamonds} {Q-Diamonds}. The board came a harmless {J-Clubs} {4-Diamonds} {4-Hearts} {5-Spades} {Q-Spades} to give Dodds the early double-up. He now has roughly 100,000 chips, while Kaselias is down to 35,000.

Hachem Doubles

Joe Hachem
Joe Hachem
Joe Hachem raised to 7,600 before Rajkumar Ramakrishnan in the big blind reraised enough to put Hachem all in. He made the call.

Hachem: {A-Clubs}{K-Clubs}
Ramakrishnan: {A-Hearts}{9-Hearts}

The flop brought a sweat when it landed {J-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{7-Hearts} to give Ramakrishnan a flush draw. The turn bricked the {4-Clubs} but the river produced a collective gasp from the rail as it fell a red king, but it was the right one for Hachem as the {K-Diamonds} gave him a much needed double-up. He's now up to 80,000.
