Smith Dodges Hearts to Double

Dan Smith was all in with {a-Spades}{9-Clubs}, and Carlos Mortensen looked him up with {a-Hearts}{6-Hearts}.

The flop fell {j-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{7-Clubs}, pairing Smith's kicker but giving Mortensen a flush draw. "Uhoh," Dan said as soon as he saw the flop. He held his breath through the {3-Diamonds} turn and the {8-Diamonds} river. Both were safe, and Smith doubled to 8,750.

"I have a theory that heart flushes come more often than any other flush," Smith deadpanned. "So I was very concerned."

Smith Donates to the Mortensen Fund

Dan Smith limped his button. Carlos Mortensen quickly moved all in. "I was planning on going for the limp and then the all in" Smith said, leaning back in his chair. He asked for a count. The shove bet was 7,650.

"Is king jack good?" Mortensen nodded. "Do you promise?" Mortensen shook his head to that one.

"You know, if you're lying, we can't be friends anymore," Smith warned. "And my birthday is coming up, and I throw a great party."

Eventually Smith decided to fold. "You win this round, Carlos." Then Smith asked if he paid Mortensen $25, could he see one card. But before he'd even finished the question, Mortensen turned up the {6-Clubs}.

Smith tossed him a green chip while lamenting the timing of his offer. "What a terrible turn of events!" he shouted, laughing.

Mortensen Betting in the Dark

Dan Smith limped his button, and Carlos Mortensen raised to 800. Smith counted out his whole stack before making the call. Mortensen tossed out 1,200 before the dealer burned and flopped {7-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{3-Hearts}. Smith, who later said he wasn't sure the bet had been in the dark, folded.

Smith - 11,000
Mortensen - 9,000

Pot for Carlos

The coordinated board read {10-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{4-Hearts} when Dan Smith bet 725. Carlos Mortensen called. The {a-Hearts} on the river looked like an interesting card. Smith bet 1,425 at the pot, and Mortensen looked him up. Smith knew he'd lost as soon as Carlos called. Dan showed {8-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} for a missed straight draw. Mortensen showed {a-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} for a flush draw that turned into aces on the river.

"Unfortunately you had the hand that I was trying to rep," Dan said.

Mortensen - 11,000
Smith - 9,000

Smith Takes the Lead

Carlos Mortensen raised to 600, and Dan Smith called.

Flop: {k-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{4-Hearts} - Smith checked, and Mortensen bet an even 1,000. Smith called.

Turn: {7-Diamonds} - Smith checked again, and Mortensen bet 1,625. This time Smith counted his stack, shuffled it, thought some more, and check-shoved for 6,650. Mortensen considered a minute before mucking his hand.

Smith - 13,425
Mortensen - 6,575

Matador Wins First Match

Carlos Mortensen
Carlos Mortensen

Once again, Carlos Mortensen had Dan Smith all in with a dominated ace. It was Mortensen's {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds} to Smith]s {a-Spades}{10-Diamonds} this time.

Mortensen picked up a flush draw on the {k-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} flop. And he gave a fist pump when the {8-Diamonds} turn made him the nuts and had Smith drawing dead. The {3-Hearts} river was inconsequential, and Mortensen picked up a W in the third game. With that, he won the match 2-1.

Mortensen moves on to play Barry Woods. If Mortensen win that match, he will be declared the winner, and Smith and Woods will play for second place. If Woods wins the next round, then Smith is back in it with a chance to win.
