It’s the last chance to advance for hopefuls at the $2,000 bestbet Winter Open Main Event here in Jacksonville. Day 1b kicks off at noon local time with a large turnout expected to significantly boost a prizepool that already has $232,525 in it.

On Friday, 131 players took their shot on Day 1a, with 17 advancing to Sunday’s Day 2. Brett Feder of Jacksonville has the number that players Saturday will be trying to catch, as he turned his 30,000 starting chips into a huge stack of 650,000 by night’s end.

Bailey Gets an Early Boost

Level 1 : Blinds 100/200, 0 ante

Christian Jorn raised to 700 from the cutoff and got called by Joseph Bailey in the big blind.

Bailey check-called bets of 1,200, 2,300, and finally 7,000 on a board of {10-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{k-Spades}{4-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}.

On the river, Jorn told Bailey he was good and was ready to muck his hand before Bailey showed {q-Clubs}{10-Clubs} for kings and tens, which was indeed good as the pot was pushed his way.

Macella and Hale Up Early

Level 1 : Blinds 100/200, 0 ante

Seville Hale was sitting with two starting stacks early after eliminating an opponent, but he recently sent some of his profit across his table to Justin Macella.

After an early position open to 600 and two calls, including Hale on the button, Macella squeezed to 3,000 from the big blind. Hale and another player called.

On the {a-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{3-Hearts} flop, Macella led for 6,500 and only got a call from Hale.

The turn brought the {j-Hearts} and Macella fired again, this time for 11,000. Hale pondered briefly then folded to send the healthy pot to Macella.

Carroll Gets a Do-over to Avoid Elimination

Level 2 : Blinds 100/200, 200 ante
Thomas Carroll and Geoffrey Blum
Thomas Carroll and Geoffrey Blum

After a preflop-raising war that saw Thomas Carroll and Geoffrey Blum each get 8,000 in the middle before a flop of {q-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}, Carroll moved his last 10,700 in from the hijack, putting Blum to a decision in the cutoff.

Carroll was chatty with Blum as he pondered his decision, telling Blum he'd show him a card, that he'd let Blum pick the card, and finally telling Blum, "if you want to ride the turnpike, you've gotta pay the toll."

Blum ultimately chose to call and he was in great shape to send Carroll to the rail early.

Thomas Carroll: {a-Diamonds}{8-Spades}
Geoffrey Blum: {j-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}

Blum's jacks were ahead of Carroll's eights, but there was more drama to come.

In the time that Blum was making his decision, the dealer placed the burn card for the turn next to the other burn cards, then mistakenly burned a second card before placing the {10-Hearts} on the turn.

The dealer realized his mistake and called the floor. The {10-Hearts} was pulled from the board and would become the river burn card. What should have been the turn card was retrieved and placed on the board as the new and correct turn card... it was the {8-Hearts}, giving Carroll trips!

The {10-Diamonds} fell on the river and Caroll excitedly repeated his phrase, "if you want to ride the turnpike, you've gotta pay the toll" as the pot was pushed his way, while Blum was left shaking his head at his misfortune.
