Sharon DeVault on Day 1c of the 2014 Borgata Winter Poker Open Event #8
Sharon DeVault on Day 1c of the 2014 Borgata Winter Poker Open Event #8

We passed by a table just as several players began loudly calling for the floor (or the floah, as we are in New Jersey after all).

The board read {k-Spades}{j-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} and the {10-Clubs} lay face up on the table. Apparently, the dealer did not notice Sharon DeVault's hand placed fourth street on the felt before she had a chance to act. The floor staff ruled that the card would not count, and the dealer burned and turned a second time, bringing the {k-Diamonds} to the table instead.

Two players folded without a bet to them with the new card on board, saying the mucks we're "out of principle," and that's where things really went screwy. DeVault and Mark Cincotti took the {10-Diamonds} on the river, and Cincotta bet into DeVault.

She then pushed a big stack forward for a raise, sloppily splashing the pot with her jumbled stack, and with Cincotta still contemplating his decision, DeVault inexplicably revealed her hand to be {Q-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} for the second-nut flush.

Sitting to DeVault's right, Cincotta raised an eyebrow in surprise, before holding his cards up for the table to see. With the {6-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} in the hole, he had made a flush as well, and according to him "would've paid it off before I saw her's was bigger." His irrelevant flush went sailing into the muck while DeVault apologized for her frazzled play.

So, to recap, DeVault tried to spike a gutshot straight on the turn, and hit her gin card, only to see it be nullified by the dealer error. The new turn card then changed her hand to a diamond flush draw, along with Cincotta's, and the river completed both their hands. Even then, her own mistaken reveal killed the action and prevented her from doubling through.

Poker. What a game huh?

Allard Broedelet Trying to Win More Than Play Money

Allard Broedelet is Looking to Score Some Actual Cash Here on Day 1c
Allard Broedelet is Looking to Score Some Actual Cash Here on Day 1c

After storming out of the gate to become the chip leader of the Borgata Winter Poker Open's first event, Allard Broedelet was dismayed to learn that the tournament he was in charge of had been suspended.

Despite suffering one of the worst bad beats the poker world has ever been witness to, and missing out at a shot to take home more than $372,000, Broedelet decided to jump back into the fray here tonight. He currently sits with about 75,000 chips, good for more than 100 bigs at the moment, but after the experience he endured earlier in the week, he may want to make sure each one checks out.

Asher Conniff Busts Men Nguyen

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Men "The Master" Nguyen is Busto Here on Day 1c
Men "The Master" Nguyen is Busto Here on Day 1c

Men Nguyen was recently sent packing via the standard all-in coin flip confrontation.

According to the Asher Conniff, the man who stacked "The Master," he called an opening raise of 1,500 only to see Nguyen move all in for about 20,000 or so more.

Conniff held {A-Clubs}{Q-Clubs} and decided to take on the seven-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner. Nguyen tabled {6-}{6-} and the two were off to the races.

The flop fell {j-}{8-}{4-} and Nguyen was still out in front, as he was when the another {j-} dropped on the turn. The board pairing was a bad sign, however, as now Conniff could hit any ace, queen, jack or eight to take the pot.

River: {q-}

With that, Conniff notched the knockout and sent Nguyen off in search of yet another tournament.

Wayne's World

Wayne Griffin on Day 1c of the 2014 Borgata Winter Poker Open Event 8 ($250k Guaranteed)
Wayne Griffin on Day 1c of the 2014 Borgata Winter Poker Open Event 8 ($250k Guaranteed)

After falling to just 7,000 or so chips early in Day 1c, Maryland resident Wayne Griffin has surged back into the realm of respectability with a 65,000 stack.

He made a few fortunate hands to get back on track, and in the last deal before the recent break, he toppled an overpair by flopping a set.

Griffin's {7-Hearts}{7-Clubs} connected perfectly on the {3-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{6-Spades} flop, and with his opponent holding {Q-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}, all money soon was soon pushed into the middle. The turn ({j-Clubs}) and river ({10-Diamonds}) failed to bring another queen on board, and with that, Griffin gave himself a new lease on life.

A regular member of Rich's Home Game back in Maryland, Griffin is one of the many recreational players looking to make a splash at the Borgata Winter Poker Open, and if he keeps up the momentum here tonight, he just might have to raise the stakes when he returns.

Megan Milburn (Seen Here at the Final Table of Event 9, Where She Took 2nd Place) is Back For More Here on Day 1c

Fresh off a runner-up performance in Event 9 ($300 Ladies Event), Megan Milburn is back to see if she can capitalize on the momentum.

Milburn pocketed more than $5,500 for the 2nd place finish, playing an aggressive style that was well-suited to take advantage of the typically passive players who enter restricted-entry events.

We'll see if she can being that same level of relentlessness and focus here today, especially after a late night and more than 14 hours of play yesterday.

Kick in the Door, Wavin' the Four-Four

If You Don't Know, Now You Know... Coleem Chestnut Can Play the Game
If You Don't Know, Now You Know... Coleem Chestnut Can Play the Game

Colleem Chestnut just took down a 200,000+ chip after making an extremely impressive call on the river.

Samir Charwa opened for 14,000 and Chestnut flatted to take the {q-}{5-}{3-} flop. After a c-bet of 24,000 by Charwa, who held one of the larger stacks in the room at that point, Chestnut smooth-called once more, bringing a {2-} on the turn.

Another bet of 44,000 did not faze the Brooklyn native, and Chestnut came along to see a {Q-} drop on the river.

Charwa made another 44,000 bet on fifth street, but Chestnut was undeterred and looked his man up.

Showdown:

Chestnut: {5-}{7-}
Charwa: {4-}{4-}

Chestnut took the enormous pot down with just a pair of fives, earning the respect and admiration of his astounded tablemates, one of whom clapped Chestnut on the back in congratulation while praising his play.

The Early Bird Gets the Worm

A Cash Prize of $2,000 Awaits the Chip Leader of Day 1b, While the Day 1c Chip Leader Will Take Home Nothing but Pride
A Cash Prize of $2,000 Awaits the Chip Leader of Day 1b, While the Day 1c Chip Leader Will Take Home Nothing but Pride

Here at the Borgata Winter Poker Open's eight event, the chip leaders from Day 1a and Day 1b will each receive a cash prize payout of $2,000, while the runner-up will pocket $1,000 for climbing the counts. These bonus payments are subtracted from the tournament's total prize pool, meaning a $6,000 of the kitty has been siphoned off to provide an added incentive for a fortunate few.

David Gerassi took down the two thousand last night, and in thirty minutes another fortunate soul will earn a couple grand as well.

Unfortunately for the late risers who just sat down to play Day 1c, building the biggest stack in the room will offer no further reward. The promotion was limited to the first two starting flights, meaning aggressive players prone to accumulating chips in a hurry should set their alarms a little earlier for future events if they want to get in on the fun.

After all, each player in third flight is essentially contributing a few dollars to create a prize they can't even claim.
