Tai Vo Leads Day 1b of $1,500 Main Event

Level 16 : Blinds 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Tai Vo

Another day is in the books here at Champions Club in Houston, Texas as Day 1b of the WPO Event #15: $1,500 Main Event has come to a close. 71 players took their shot today in the $1 million guaranteed event, but only 9 finished the day with chips in a bag. Leading the way is Tai Vo who bagged up 1,190,000, which is over 400,000 more than Gabriel Andrade who finished in second with 760,000. Rounding out the top three is Champion's very own Isaac Trumbo who ended the day by busting David Mzareulov and managed to bag up 670,000.

As with all of the tournaments here at Champions Club, the action was fast and heavy from the jump, with players not afraid to stick their stacks in at Level 1. Most of the action came from one particular table, where Derek Normand and Zhong Wilkerson were both seated. Wilkerson went on a heater midway through the day, and was even chipleading at one point, but alas, she was crippled in a big hand with Normand and then finished off by Matthew Liu.

Normand also drove most of the action and managed to build up a healthy stack until a brutal beat sent him home early. He got it all in with pocket kings against the pocket tens of Jamie Ho and the pocket fives of Tai Vo, but a five on the flop gave Vo the lead and spelled the end for Normand, who was left crippled and exited soon after. On the other table, Trumbo and Andrade didn't get involved in quite so many big pots but slowly grew their stacks throughout the day. Local crusher Thai Ha (262,000) was also in the mix today, bouncing from table to table as he either busted or just kept getting moved. It was interesting to see how the dynamic at each table shifted whenever he would be placed there.

As this is only the second of six starting flights, there is still plenty of time for players to get in on this action, with a flight every day until Sunday, when the players return for Day 2. There will also be multiple satellites each day as well as PLO flips for many chances to get into this tournament cheaply.

Day 1c fires off tomorrow at noon local time, but unfortunately there will be no coverage for that flight. No need to fret, however, PokerNews will be back on the scene the following day with all the action in Day 1d.

See you then!

Tai Vo Spikes a Five to Take the Chip Lead; Normand and Ho Exit

Level 14 : Blinds 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Tai Vo
Tai Vo

After an open from Derek Normand, Jamie Ho moved all in for 85,000, Tai Vo called, and then Normand moved all in for much more.

Vo quickly called and the three players tabled their hands, with Normand covering.

Jamie Ho: 1010
Tai Vo: 55
Derek Normand: KK

Normand was in a great position to take the chip lead in this massive pot, but fate had other plans as the flop came out 975 to immediately give Vo the lead with a set of fives. The turn 8 gave Ho some outs as he picked up an open-ended straight draw, but the river 8 improved Vo to a full house and he scooped the huge pot.

Ho was sent to the rail and Normand was left short, finding the exit soon after.

Tai Vo

On a heads-up flop of 10J6, Tai Vo moved all in and Bryan Broussard called to put him at risk.

Tai Vo: QJ
Bryan Broussard: AK

Broussard would need to hit an ace, king, or queen to win the pot, but the runout of 4J did not do it and the pot was shipped over to Vo for the double.

Normand and Wilkerson Duking it Out

Level 7 : Blinds 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Derek Normand
Derek Normand

On a heads-up flop of Q56, Derek Normand moved all in and Zhong Wilkerson made the call to put him at risk.

Derek Normand: 67
Zhong Wilkerson: 22

Wilkerson needed to spike a deuce to win, but the runout of A4 did not do it and Normand scored a double.

The very next hand, she got it all back when she doubled through Normand with aces versus his flopped top pair of kings.

On the following hand, they were heads-up on the flop of 924 when Wilkerson bet 12,000 and Normand check-jammed all in. Wilkerson called with KQ while Normand held 55 for the lead. The runout of J5 improved Normand to a set of fives and he took the pot for a double.

And finally, on the next hand, Normand shoved preflop and once again Wilkerson called to put him at risk.

Derek Normand: KQ
Zhong Wilkerson: J9

The board ran out 982Q5 to give Normand the win with his pair of queens and he is sitting at 120,000 while Wilkerson was left with 62,000.
