Vanstrom Captures Day 1c Chip Lead of the 2021 Colorado Poker Championship $1,450 Main Event

Level 14 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Jason Vanstrom
Jason Vanstrom

The Bally's Black Hawk 2021 Colorado Poker Championship $1,450 Main Event drew 116 entries on Day 1c, the third and final flight of the tournament to bring the total number of entries up to 307. When play concluded at the end of the night, 21 players remained and added their names to Sunday's Day 2 roster alongside the 26 who advanced from the event's first two flights.

Jason Vanstrom (305,000) finished the day atop the counts, chipping up to just shy of that amount with four levels of play still remaining on the night. Nobody else caught him as the field largely remained bunched together through the final two-plus hours of the night. Tracy Allgeier (289,500) came the closest to doing so, exhibiting an impressive showing of his own after dipping well below starting stack during the opening levels of play.

Other notables to advance included Ryan Dodson (201,000), Phil Gioia (157,500), Matt Livingston (151,000), Vincent Moscati (138,500), and Ben Keeline (92,000).

The top two players on the CPC points leader board in Bobby Sanoubane and Jason Welch both failed to make it through the day, leaving the potential for those further down to overtake them. Corey Zedo, Danny Gonzales, Matt Johnston also were among those to fall short of a bag.

A total of 47 players will return to Sunday's Day 2, which will begin at 11 a.m. local time, one hour earlier than Day 1's noon start. The top 31 places will make it into the money, with plenty of room for play all day long as levels increase to one hour in length. There is no scheduled end time for Day 2, as play will conclude when the final table of nine is reached before playing down to a winner on Monday.

PokerNews will be back at it when cards go in the air. See you in the morning.

Level 14 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Sean Maher
Sean Maher

Hand #1: Sean Maher open-jammed for 92,500 under the gun and Maxx Holland gave him action one seat over. All remaining players folded.

Sean Maher: {9-Clubs}{9-Hearts}
Maxx Holland: {a-Spades}{q-Spades}

Holland picked up four more outs on {7-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{j-Hearts} but running {7-Diamonds}{2-Spades} left Maher on top to secure the double.

Hand #2: On the very next hand, Holland open-jammed for his last 29,500 under the gun and action folded around to Maher in the big blind, who looked at his two cards and then dropped a chip onto the felt to signify a call.

Maxx Holland: {10-Spades}{10-Diamonds}
Sean Maher: {a-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}

Holland's night came to an end as the board ran out [a6dac7hjcad], giving Maher trips to take the rest of Holland's stack.

Nick Marchitti was also eliminated from another table shortly thereafter, with the pair of knockouts bringing the field down to 22.

Driggers KO's Konarske

Level 11 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Stephen Driggers
Stephen Driggers

All of the chips got into the middle on a flop reading {10-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} between Eddy Konarske in the small blind and Stephen Driggers, who was on the button.

Eddy Konarske: {a-Hearts}{q-Clubs}
Stephen Driggers: {7-Clubs}{7-Hearts}

Konarske needed to hit running Broadway outs or running diamonds to stay alive, both of which became an impossibility on the turn {5-Hearts}. The river {4-Clubs} made the hand official and the pot was shipped to Driggers as Konarske was eliminated from the tournament.

Welch Done and Dusted

Level 10 : 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante
Jason Welch
Jason Welch

An all-in preflop scenario just transpired between Ryan Dodson and Jason Welch that left Welch dry on chips. According to Dodson, he opened to 3,000 in early position and action folded around to Welch in the big blind, who re-jammed for less than a starting stack. Dodson called.

Jason Welch: {j-}{j-}
Ryan Dodson: {k-}{k-}

The runout wound up changing nothing and Welch's chips were sent across the table to Dodson, resulting in his elimination from the tournament. Though Welch's Main Event run has come to an end, he currently sits second on the overall CPC points leader board, and will likely be a near-lock for one of the five seats being awarded to next Wednesday's $3,000 High Roller, which will also be covered by PokerNews.

Pineda Cages Meyer

Level 7 : 400/800, 800 ante
Pat Pineda
Pat Pineda

Pat Pineda open-limped in the cutoff and Sean Maher raised to 2,800 on the button. The small blind called and Caleb Meyer three-bet to 9,000 in the big blind.

Pineda thought for a bit and then put in chips to call, sending Maher into the tank for over a minute before folding. The small blind folded behind and action went heads up to the flop {7-Spades}{j-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}, where Meyer jammed for a less than a pot-sized bet and Pineda immediately announced a call.

Meyer slammed down {q-Spades}{q-Diamonds} upon seeing Pineda's {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts} and found no help as the runout finished {j-Hearts}{k-Spades} to give Pineda a full house and eliminate Meyer from the tournament.

Gonzales Gets a Fold of the "Second Nuts"

Level 6 : 300/600, 600 ante
Danny Gonzales
Danny Gonzales

A little over 10,000 was in the middle on a completed board of {2-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{q-Hearts} and action was heads up between Danny Gonzales in the big blind and an opponent on the button. Gonzales bet 15,000, sending his opponent into the tank for over two minutes.

"I'm almost there," said the player on the button.

"Take your time, buddy," said Gonzales, looking up to the player.

"I have the second nuts," the player responded. "The question is, do you have a flush?"

"I've got to fold," said the player, showing {6-Spades}{5-Spades} for the straight. The table laughed light-heartedly, expecting to see {k-Clubs}.

"What I meant was, I have the nuts if he didn't have a flush," the player corrected.

"Do you want to see?" asked Gonzales to his opponent, who declined to result in Gonzales sending his cards to the dealer face-down in exchange for the pot.
