Welcome To Day 1c of the 2021 Colorado Poker Championship $1,450 Main Event

Bally's Black Hawk
Bally's Black Hawk

It's time for Day 1c of the Bally's Black Hawk 2021 Colorado Poker Championship (CPC) $1,450 Main Event.

The third and final starting flight of the CPC Main Event begins at noon with 191 entries already recorded through the first two days of play. A strong showing is expected to turn up for what will be the largest flight of the event, one that will look to surpass the 330 entries generated during the most recent 2019 version despite a 30% increase in this year's buy-in.

Players start with 30,000 in chips and blinds of 100/100/100. All levels on Day 1 will last 40 minutes with 10-minute breaks occurring after every three levels, or two hours of play, and a 40-minute dinner break at the completion of Level 9 (approximately 6:20 p.m. local time). Late registration with unlimited re-entries will remain open through the dinner break, closing at the start of Level 10 at approximately 7 p.m. local time.

Nearly 14 full levels will be played to their completion, with an official hard-stop time of 7:35 remaining in the final level of the night due to Day 1a reaching 12% of the field at that point. Eight players advanced to Sunday's Day 2 from that flight and another 18 added joined the party from Friday's Day 1b, with a trio of Rocco Palumbo (554,500), Mike Kenny (546,000), and Steve Wilkie (506,000) currently atop the overall counts as the only players above 500,000.

Who else will take advantage of their final opportunities to make the Day 2 roster? Keep it here at PokerNews throughout the day and find out.

Level 2 : 100/200, 200 ante
Kevin Kurtz
Kevin Kurtz

The board read {6-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{7-Spades} with around 17,000 in the middle as Kevin Kurtz got his remaining 18,400 into the middle in the hijack against a player in middle position.

Kevin Kurtz: {a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}
Middle Position: {q-Diamonds}{q-Spades}

"Gah!" said Kurtz's opponent as he saw the bad news and the river {10-Diamonds} completed the runout. "Nice hand."

Cahn Makes Another Flush, Takes Another Stack

Level 3 : 200/300, 300 ante
Ethan Cahn
Ethan Cahn

Ethan Cahn raised to 800 under the gun and action folded around to the blinds, both of whom called. The flop came {10-Spades}{3-Spades}{5-Hearts} and action checked to Cahn, who continuation-bet 1,500 and received two calls.

Three-way action continued to the turn {8-Hearts}, where the small blind led for 6,000. The big blind folded and Cahn called, taking action heads up to the river {2-Spades} where the small blind checked. Cahn then bet 10,500, the small blind check-jammed for a bit more, and Cahn instantlly called.

Small Blind: {q-Spades}{9-Spades}
Ethan Cahn: {a-Spades}{8-Spades}

Cahn's nut flush trumped his opponent's queen-high flush and he sent another player to the rail, bringing his stack up to more than 120,000 before the first break of the afternoon.

Aweida Catches Heat Early

Level 5 : 300/500, 500 ante
Sammy Aweida
Sammy Aweida

Elenna Martinez found herself down to 9,100 and open-jammed under the gun. A player in early position called and then Sammy Aweida re-jammed, forcing the early-position player to relinquish his hand.

Elenna Martinez: {5-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}
Sammy Aweida: {q-Spades}{q-Clubs}

Martinez found herself with a shot at a triple but needed to find a five in order to get it. No help came as the board ran out {7-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{a-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} to leave Aweida's queens best and earn him the pot and the knockout.

After entering the tournament midway through Level 4, Aweida is already above 100K, confirming with PokerNews that he immediately woke up with two kings to knock out a short stack once he sat down. He then found a full double after getting stacks in on a board reading {8-}{9-}{j-}{10-} with {k-}{q-} against his opponent's {q-}{10-}.

Gonzales Gets a Fold of the "Second Nuts"

Level 6 : 300/600, 600 ante
Danny Gonzales
Danny Gonzales

A little over 10,000 was in the middle on a completed board of {2-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{q-Hearts} and action was heads up between Danny Gonzales in the big blind and an opponent on the button. Gonzales bet 15,000, sending his opponent into the tank for over two minutes.

"I'm almost there," said the player on the button.

"Take your time, buddy," said Gonzales, looking up to the player.

"I have the second nuts," the player responded. "The question is, do you have a flush?"

"I've got to fold," said the player, showing {6-Spades}{5-Spades} for the straight. The table laughed light-heartedly, expecting to see {k-Clubs}.

"What I meant was, I have the nuts if he didn't have a flush," the player corrected.

"Do you want to see?" asked Gonzales to his opponent, who declined to result in Gonzales sending his cards to the dealer face-down in exchange for the pot.

Pineda Cages Meyer

Level 7 : 400/800, 800 ante
Pat Pineda
Pat Pineda

Pat Pineda open-limped in the cutoff and Sean Maher raised to 2,800 on the button. The small blind called and Caleb Meyer three-bet to 9,000 in the big blind.

Pineda thought for a bit and then put in chips to call, sending Maher into the tank for over a minute before folding. The small blind folded behind and action went heads up to the flop {7-Spades}{j-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}, where Meyer jammed for a less than a pot-sized bet and Pineda immediately announced a call.

Meyer slammed down {q-Spades}{q-Diamonds} upon seeing Pineda's {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts} and found no help as the runout finished {j-Hearts}{k-Spades} to give Pineda a full house and eliminate Meyer from the tournament.

Tyler Potts
Tyler Potts

Tyler Potts was just spotted with a stack of 180,000 and helped fill in the details alongside tablemate Matt Johnston filled in the details as to how he got the majority of it. According to the pair, a player in middle position opened and Potts called in the cutoff. Pat Pineda then three-bet in the small blind and the original raiser four-bet jammed, with Potts calling and Pineda folding two jacks face up.

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Bally's Black Hawk
Bally's Black Hawk

The tournament has reached the end of Level 9 and it's time for the 40-minute dinner break. A total of 115 entries have been recorded and 47 players still remain.

This is the last chance to enter the tournament: registration will close at 7 p.m. local time.

Welch Done and Dusted

Level 10 : 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante
Jason Welch
Jason Welch

An all-in preflop scenario just transpired between Ryan Dodson and Jason Welch that left Welch dry on chips. According to Dodson, he opened to 3,000 in early position and action folded around to Welch in the big blind, who re-jammed for less than a starting stack. Dodson called.

Jason Welch: {j-}{j-}
Ryan Dodson: {k-}{k-}

The runout wound up changing nothing and Welch's chips were sent across the table to Dodson, resulting in his elimination from the tournament. Though Welch's Main Event run has come to an end, he currently sits second on the overall CPC points leader board, and will likely be a near-lock for one of the five seats being awarded to next Wednesday's $3,000 High Roller, which will also be covered by PokerNews.
