It took three full days of poker to reach the finish line in the August 2019 Colorado Poker Championship $1,100 Main Event. A record-setting 330 entries generated a total prize pool of $320,100 over three initial starting flights and when the dust settled, Steve Wilkie and Nate Zoller agreed to an even chop for $60,114 apiece after a nearly three-hour heads-up battle and 12 hours of play on Day 3.

Wilkie entered the day in the middle of the pack with 724,000 in chips, while Zoller started with just over 2 million, good for second place when cards went in the air. The two local grinders also happen to be friends from the same home poker league.

“If you told us on Friday morning that we were going to chop the event and each take home $60,000, we would have been thrilled,” said Wilkie after the tournament.

Final Table Action

Though the day started with the majority of the field closely lumped together in the chip counts, things did not stay that way for long. Jay Jesse, who entered the day third in chips, lost a few three-bet pots to start off the day. Meanwhile, Zoller chipped up, surpassing Day 2 chip leader Barb Visher within the first hour of play.

During that time, George Medina had found himself down to 330,000 and got all in preflop with pocket tens against the ace-king of Jon Cohen. A king on the flop ended Medina’s day in ninth place ($7,714), while Cohen began to go on a bit of a heater that saw him get as high as 1.7 million in chips.

Wendy Freedman (8th place - $8,963), who entered the day ninth in chips, also chipped up early, nearly reaching 1 million before calling a shove from Jay (7th place - $10,819) with pocket queens. Jay had two jacks and hit a straight on the turn, leaving Freedman short again. She proceeded to shove her last 378,000 in with pocket fives, only to see Jay shove over the top of her with pocket kings. After a few folds, Zoller looked down at pocket aces and knocked both of them out in one fell swoop.

As Cohen had chipped up to 1.7 million, Wilkie had also seen his stack increase to over 1 million. He then put a damper in Cohen’s day when Cohen turned a king-high straight on the turn, only to have Wilkie river Broadway and get a full double as a result. Wilkie then found himself among the chip leaders with Visher and Zoller, while Bobby Sanoubane, Randy Needens, and Cohen found themselves short.

Jon Cohen finished in 6th place ($12,804)
Jon Cohen finished in 6th place ($12,804)

Of the shortest stacks, Cohen was the first to bust (6th place - $12,804) after losing almost all of his chips in a pot where Visher made the nut flush on the river. He busted a few hands later, while Sanoubane proceeded to find a triple and get back into the mix.

Play then continued for close to 90 minutes without an elimination. Wilkie chipped up to almost 5 million in chips during that time, becoming the clear chip leader before fifth-place finisher Needens ($16,325) was eliminated, getting his last 165,000 in with ace-king and having a pair of kings come out second-best versus Zoller’s set of sevens.

It took another 80 minutes from there before Visher was eliminated in fourth place ($21,767), with chip stacks fluctuating fairly regularly during that time. With three players left, Sanoubane was the shortest stack and ended up getting knocked out after shoving his Big Slick from the small blind into Wilkie’s pocket sevens from the big blind. He was left dry on chips after he was unable to improve on the runout, and the tournament proceeded onward heads up.

Bobby Sanoubane finished in 3rd place ($21,767)
Bobby Sanoubane finished in 3rd place ($21,767)

When heads-up play started, Wilkie had 7.3 million in chips to Zoller's 2.6 million. However, Zoller took the reigns to start, chipping up to nearly even and even taking the lead for a brief moment before Wilkie regained the momentum. From there, Wilkie ground Zoller down as low as 1.6 million as the two battled for just shy of three hours before Zoller got all in preflop with ace-nine to Wilke’s pocket sevens. Zoller was down to the last card of his tournament life and spiked an ace on the river to double and find himself with a 2:1 chip lead.

At that point, the blinds had reached a high enough level that the players figured the cards would have a bigger impact than the players in determining the outcome. Due to their friendship, the two agreed to an even chop before putting stacks all in until an official first-place finisher was determined.

With the result, Zoller also locked up first place in the Colorado Poker Championship (CPC) Points Leaderboard, getting $1,000 as well as free entry into Wednesday’s $2,500 High Roller for his prize. Wilkie had no points prior to the Main Event, and while he still finds himself on the cusp of a free seat, he is flying to Mexico on Wednesday morning instead.

In the meantime, the two are simply going to enjoy their feat. Zoller and Wilkie happened to see each other on the road about halfway home after Day 2 and called one another to talk. At the time, Wilkie was frustrated with how the end of Day 2 went. They talked things over and agreed to go home and come back fresh for Day 3 so that they could chop the event. Less than twenty-four hours later, that manifestation became reality.

Zoller Doubles Through Sanoubane

Level 28 : 30,000/60,000, 30,000 ante
Nate Zoller
Nate Zoller

Nate Zoller had opened preflop from the small blind and saw Bobby Sanoubane defend. The flop came {5-Spades}{3-Spades}{8-Diamonds} and he made a continuation-bet of 100,000, getting a call from Sanoubane.

The turn fell {k-Clubs} and Zoller announced he was all in for a total of 905,000. Sanoubane went into the tank and after close to three minutes, threw in chips to call.

Nate Zoller: {8-Clubs}{5-Clubs}
Bobby Sanoubane: {k-Spades}{q-Hearts}

Zoller's flopped eights up were ahead of Sanoubane's top pair of kings and he was in need of fading the eight king/queen/threes in the deck in order to double. The river {a-Spades} truly was the prettiest card in the deck for Zoller as he raked in the pot to find himself back in second place in chips.

Barb Visher
Barb Visher

Barb Visher went all in for her last 810,000 on the button Steve Wilkie quickly annoucned a call from the big blind upon Bobby Sanoubane folding in the small blind.

Barb Visher: {6-Hearts}{6-Spades}
Steve Wilkie: {j-Diamonds}{j-Spades}

"Nice hand," said Visher, realizing she was drawing slim for her tournament life. The flop came {a-Hearts}{3-Spades}{10-Hearts} and was of no help to her. The turn came {j-Hearts} to take away the two sixes she had as outs. However, it gave her eight new outs to a flush, leaving her in better shape than she was in on the flop. The river fell {a-Spades} to seal the deal and she was sent home in fourth place after around six hours of play at the final table.

Randy Needens
Randy Needens

Barb Visher opened to 125,000 from the hijack and Randy Needens went all in over the top of her for 165,000. Action folded to Nate Zoller in the big blind and he put out chips to call. Visher called behind to create a side pot for potential future action.

Both players checked the flop {9-Spades}{j-Clubs}{a-Hearts}. The turn came {7-Hearts} and Zoller bet 200,000. Visher called, bringing the river {5-Clubs}. Zoller threw out another bet of 300,000 and Visher folded, showing the {j-Diamonds} face up. With Visher's fold, Zoller earned the side pot and it was time for both him and Needens to table their hands for the main pot.

Randy Needens: {a-Spades}{k-Clubs}
Nate Zoller: {7-Spades}{7-Clubs}

Needens had flopped top pair, top kicker and felt great about his chances to triple and regain some fold equity. Unfortunately for him, Zoller turned a set of sevens and locked up the elimination, with Needens earning a fifth-place prize of $16,325.

Steve Wilkie opened to 100,000 in the hijack and received calls behind him from Nate Zoller in the cutoff and Barb Visher, who was on the button. The three saw a flop of {9-Spades}{q-Hearts}{7-Spades} and Wilkie checked. Zoller put out a bet of 250,000 and found a call from Visher.

"Seven hundred fifty thousand," said Wilkie, putting out a check-raise for said amount. Zoller went into the tank and folded. Visher folded behind him and Wilkie took down the pot, bringing him to over 4 million in chips and making him the clear chip leader at the current moment.

Sanoubane Makes Hero Fold, Then Doubles

Level 26 : 20,000/40,000, 40,000 ante
Bobby Sanoubane
Bobby Sanoubane

Bobby Sanoubane and Steve Wilkie both defended a raise from Nate Zoller out of the small- and big blinds, respectively, to take action three-handed to a flop of {4-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}. Zoller saw action checked to him and he made a continuation-bet of 75,000, which both Sanoubane and Wilkie called.

The turn fell {7-Clubs} and Sanoubane checked. Wilke bet 175,000 and Zoller folded, putting action back on Sanoubane. After two minutes, he slid out a check-raise to 400,000. Wilkie then went into the tank before putting out chips to call.

The river came {a-Hearts} and Sanoubane thought for a while before checking. Wilkie announced he was all in.

"Will you show, Steve?" asked Sanoubane.

"Yep, I will," responded Wilkie.

Sanoubane took another 15 seconds and folded.

"Good fold," Wilkie said, showing only the {4-Diamonds} as he took in the pot, extending his chip lead.

Sanoubane had 485,000 left and got it in on the next hand when he three-bet all in over a raise from Barb Visher. Visher made the call.

Bobby Sanoubane: {q-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}
Barb Visher: {2-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}

The board ran out {5-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{j-Clubs}{q-Spades}{4-Spades} and just like that, Sanoubane found himself right back over 1 million in chips.

Sanoubane Finds a Triple

Level 25 : 15,000/30,000, 30,000 ante
Bobby Sanoubane
Bobby Sanoubane

Nate Zoller was in the cutoff and opened to 100,000. He received a call from Barb Visher, who was on the button, and Bobby Sanoubane three-bet all in for 335,000. Both Zoller and Visher called, putting Sanoubane in an opportunity to triple his stack.

With Zoller and Visher competing for the side pot, both checked through the runout {k-Spades}{7-Spades}{6-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{7-Hearts}. On each street, Sanoubane's rail got more and more excited with the lack of action in the side pot. After the river, the dealer asked for all hands to be shown.

"Bobby wins," said Zoller.

Bobby Sanoubane: {q-Hearts}{q-Clubs}
Nate Zoller: {j-Clubs}{10-Hearts}
Barb Visher: {8-Spades}{9-Spades}

Zoller was correct, as Sanoubane's queens up proved to be the best hand. With the triple, Sanoubane now finds himself over 1 million in chips.
