Day 1 On the Horizon

Mohegan Sun
Mohegan Sun

Day 1 of the 2012 DeepStacks Poker Tour Mohegan Sun National Championship is set to start in around 20 minutes here in Uncasville, Connecticut. A handful of notables have already been spotted, including Ashton Griffin, Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi, Mike Matusow, Allen "The Chainsaw" Kessler, Justin "Boosted J" Smith, and Vanessa Selbst.

Back in February, William Vogel took down the Western New York Poker Championship. He bested Lou Procopio heads up, earning $71,827.

The players will begin with 40,000 in tournament chips, and they may re-enter the tournament if they bust during the first five levels. The plan is to play ten 60-minute levels here on Day 1. Then we'll bag and tag, and do it all again tomorrow.

Be sure to stay tuned!

Good Start for Jewell

Kurt Jewell opened to 250 from early position and was called by a player in middle position. Victor Ramdin popped it to 800 from the cutoff, the player in the small blind called, as did Jewell and the middle-position player.

The flop came down {Q-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}{J-Clubs} and action checked to Ramdin who bet 1,075. A fold from the small blind led to a Jewell raise to 2,350. After the player in middle position folded, Ramdin tossed his cards into muck as well.

The following hand, Jewell opened to 250 from early position again and was called by three players, including Ramdin from the hijack. The flop fell {Q-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{7-Clubs} and Jewell's continuation bet of 600 forced folds all around. He tabled {J-Clubs}{9-Clubs} as he collected the pot.

Ramdin Forced to Fold

Facing what looked like an early position raise, Victor Ramdin three-bet to 600 on the button. One opponent called, and the flop fell {4-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{3-Spades}. Ramdin's opponent led for 1,700, Ramdin raised to 3,500, and the player called.

The turn was the {9-Spades}, both players checked, and the {8-Spades} completed the board. The player cooly tossed out a blue T5,000 chip, forcing Ramdin to fold.

Grinder Getting Aggressive

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

While walking by the "featured" table, we saw that DeepStacks Pro Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi was heads up with an opponent with the board reading {7-Spades}{10-Hearts}{k-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{8-Spades}.

Mizrachi fired 10,000, which looked like a pot-sized bet, and his opponent folded.
