Fernando Santa Maria Bursts the Bubble and Takes Chip Lead on Day 1a of the EAPT Barcelona Main Event

It took nearly 13 hours of play, but the bubble finally burst on Day 1a of the EAPT Barcelona €560 Main Event.

Fernando Santa Maria did his part to send the remaining 19 players home, rivering a flush on the final hand to burst the bubble and ensure everyone who survived out of a starting field of 124 entries is in the money when Day 2 begins on Oct. 7.

Santa Maria bagged up 731,000 and the chip lead thanks to that pot. Harcharan Dogra, no stranger to success here at Casino Barcelona, is in second place after winning what proved to be the hand of the day. He and former big stack Julian Diaz Ubeda tangled in a massive pot that saw Dogra’s pocket queens survive a flip against Diaz Ubeda’s ace-king as climbed over 500,000, finishing with 567,000.

The second of four starting flights begins tomorrow at noon local time and will again play down to the final 15 percent of the field. There is also a Day 1c flight tomorrow at 6 p.m. with 30-minute levels and a turbo Day 1d on Saturday morning with 20-minute levels. The surviving players from each starting flight will then combine for Day 2 at 6 p.m.

It was a long, grueling day here in the heart of Catalonia, but the tournament is just getting started. Stay tuned as PokerNews follows all the action the rest of the way until a champion is crowned.

Fernando Santa Maria bet 15,000 from the button on a flop of 7JA and Jose Maria Montiel called in the big blind.

The turn came the 3 and Santa Maria bet another 45,000. Montiel folded A2 and Santa Maria showed him A7 for two pair as he took the pot.

The next hand, David Ballestero limped in under the gun before Santa Maria raised to 20,000 in the cutoff. Montiel called in the small blind, as did Ballestero.

The flop came 752 and Montiel led out for 20,000. Both opponents called to see the Q turn, where action checked to Santa Maria.

He bet 55,000 and Montiel tanked for several minutes before folding. Ballestero also spent a few minutes in the tank before the clock was called. He eventually joined Montiel in the muck as Santa Maria took a pot that lasted nearly 10 minutes.

Harcharan Dogra

After a player in early position raised to 8,000, Julian Diaz Ubeda three-bet to 24,000 in the small blind. Harcharan Dogra in the big blind then four-bet to 48,000 and the early-position player folded.

Ubeda, though, came back with a reraise to 100,000 and Dogra called. The flop came JJ8 and Ubeda announced he was all in. Dogra snap-called for around 180,000.

Harcharan Dogra: QQ
Julian Diaz Ubeda: AK

Dogra needed his queens to hold up as the turn came the 9, followed by the Q river that gave him a full house, the massive pot, and a double up into the chip lead.

"He's going to be chip leader to start Day 2," tablemate Jordi Mataix said.
