And the Teacher Becomes the Student...

Dario Alioto and Max Pescatori
Dario Alioto and Max Pescatori
In another odd table pairing, everyone's favorite Italian Pirate Max Pescatori drew the seat next to his young protege and fellow countryman Dario Alioto. Alioto first caught our attention when he made the final table of the $1,500 PLO8 tournament at last summer's WSOP. He followed that up by taking down his first bracelet in the £5,000 PLO event at the WSOP-Europe last September. Pescatori, of course, is a WSOP bracelet winner himself, winning a $2,500 NLHE event in 2006, on the same day that Italy won the World Cup.

Brown Tanned

Chad Brown
Chad Brown
Chad Brown has just taken an early hit to his stack after a confrontation with Benoit Gariepy. The player in the cutoff position limped and Gariepy raised it up to 225 from the button. Brown, in the small blind made the call, as did the cutoff player.

The three players saw a flop of {10-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} and the action was checked to Gariepy who led out for 350. Brown then check-raised making it 1,000 to go. The cutoff folded and Gariepy thought for a few moments before making the call.

The turn was a repeat {9-Spades} and Brown fired out a 2,000 chip bet. Gariepy quickly raised the action once again, making it 5,000 to go as the pot suddenly started to balloon. Brown called fairly quickly as the two players went to the river.

The {8-Spades} on the river slowed the players down as both checked and flipped their cards. Brown showed {A-Clubs}{K-Spades} however his two pair wasn't enough as Gariepy revealed {A-Spades}{10-Hearts} for top two pair.

Brown is now down to around 9,500 chips.

Chip Tricks?

One of the first things we noticed at the start of today's play was that the 5,000 denomination chips are now brown; yesterday they were white.

We did some investigative reporting and found out from tournament director Steve Frezer that the change was not intentional. Traditionally, the 5,000 chips used by the EPT are brown, so when Frezer was asked to retrieve the "new" chips from storage and found a brand-new and unused set of white 5,000 chips, he assumed he'd found what he was looking for. He later found out that the set he was supposed to retrieve was an updated version of the brown chips, which were stowed away in the opposite corner of the room.

According to Frezer, the plan to correct the problem is actually quite simple: when the Day 1a and b fields merge tomorrow afternoon for Day 2, the white chips will be taken out of play and replaced with the new brown ones.

Wernick's Wicked Ways

Mickey Wernick
Mickey Wernick
Mickey Wernick is travelling well after taking down a recent healthy pot.

With the board reading {2-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{10-Clubs} Wernick fired a 3,000 chip bet into a pot that was already worth over 8,000. His opponent went into the tank and so Wernick decided to fire some verbal ammunition. "You've you a big hand that you just can't lay down hey?"...."You still don't believe me?"...."Mickey Wernick never lies"....

Wernick may have been trying to extract a call from his opponent, but he eventually laid down his hand, as Wernick flashed {K-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}. "You had A-Q? That's a good fold..." quipped Wernick.

Wernick continues on his merry way and now has over 23,000 chips.
