€100,000 Super High Roller

Day 1 Started

€100,000 Super High Roller: Ball So Hard

Hello everyone and welcome to PokerNews' coverage of the PokerStars and Monte-Carlo® Casino European Poker Tour Grand Final.

The festival will be kicked off this week with the jaw-dropping €100,000 Super High Roller event, scheduled to commence today at 2:00 PM local time here in Monaco. The Sporting Club in Monaco plays host to this magnificent event that will see the world's best battle it out for the title over the course of the next three days.

So far, 2012 has been a legendary year in terms of big buy-in events. Not even a full four months into the year, there have been four events with a six-figure-or-greater entry fee: the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure $100,000 Super High Roller, the Aussie Millions $100,000 Challenge and $250,000 Challenge, and the Manila Millions HKD$1,000,000 (USD$129,000) Super High Roller. Those events have been won by Team PokerStars Pro Viktor Blom, Dan Smith, Phil Ivey and Allan Le, respectively.

This has truly been a bankroll-busting year if there ever has been one and to add to that, this €100,000 Super High Roller will be held with re-entry format. Registration will be open for the first four levels of play, but re-entry is staying open for a four full levels after that, so right through all eight levels of Day 1. Heck, if someone really wanted to, they could go off for half a million Euros easy in this thing and possibly have nothing to show for it in the end.

The list of players confirmed is already up to 34 and the event is still a few hours away from kicking off. Slated to play are Team PokerStars Pros Daniel Negreanu, Jason Mercier, Jonathan Duhamel, Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier, Vanessa Selbst and Eugene Katchalov. Grospellier is coming off a very recent victory in the EPT Berlin €10,000 High Roller where he defeated Chris Moorman heads up to win €231,000. Those participants will be joined by superstars Phil Ivey, Patrik Antonius, Sam Trickett, Tony G, Scott Seiver and Mike "Timex" McDonald.

Also, it is important to point out how much €100,000 really is. Our colleague Brad Willis wrote the following on the PokerStars Blog and we couldn't have said it better ourselves:

"It must be pointed out, there is a great difference between $100,000 and €100,000. The Euro is doing a lot better than the dollar these days, so the €100,000 event comes out to something like $132,000. This is not the kiddie pool we're swimming in this week."

The PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be on hand to bring you the coverage and you won't want to miss a thing. Stay tuned for all the action coming up soon.

Early One for Mercier

Jason Mercier and Sammy the Seahorse
Jason Mercier and Sammy the Seahorse

Team PokerStars Pro Jason Mercier just picked up the first pot at his table and it was a nice one. Maybe it has to do with the new chip protector he's brought out for this even — a bright yellow and orange sponge seahorse that stands about four inches tall.

Action folded to Anton Allemann on the button and he raised to 2,500. Mercier three-bet from the small blind to 7,700. Allemann tanked for a minute, then called to take the {A-Hearts}{9-Spades}{8-Hearts} flop. Mercier fired 4,200 and Allemann called.

The turn card was the {4-Spades} and Mercier bet 10,200. Allemann gave it a bit of thought, then folded.

Shakerchi Hits The Turn

Talal Shakerchi and Justin Bonomo have just clashed in a three-bet pot. Here is the action.

Shakerchi raised to 2,500 and Bonomo three-bet to 8,500 in the next seat. The rest of the table folded and and Shakerchi made the call. The flop was {J-Clubs} {10-Clubs} {4-Diamonds} and Shakerchi check-called a 12,100 Bonomo c-bet. That was the end of the action as the {A-Spades} and {5-Hearts} were checked through.

"Last aggressor shows?" Bonomo asks.

The dealer nods and Bonomo tables {Q-Hearts} {Q-Diamonds}, meanwhile, Shakerchi shows the winning hand of {A-Clubs} {Q-Spades}.

Great Start For Govert

Jonathan Duhamel raised to 2,500 in the cutoff and the action brought a stare from Mike McDonald in the small blind followed by a three-bet to 7,500. High Roller Regular, Govert Metaal, was seated in the big blind and he made the call, as did Duhamel.

Flop: {5-Diamonds} {4-Diamonds} {4-Clubs}

McDonald put out a bet of 13,300 and Metaal raised to 29,000. Duhamel is next to act and he made the call before McDonald folded.

Turn: {6-Hearts}

Metaal bet 50,000 and Duhamel folded.

Flush for Katchalov

Eugene Katchalov
Eugene Katchalov

From under the gun, Team PokerStars Pro Eugene Katchalov raised to 2,500. This was the second hand at his table and he was called by Masa Kagawa in the next seat, Sam Trickett in the hijack seat, Jason Mercier on the button and Vanessa Selbst in the small blind.

All five of them saw the flop come down {Q-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{4-Hearts} and action was first checked by Selbst. Katchalov bet 5,000 and everyone folded back to Selbst. She made the call.

The turn was the {8-Hearts} and now four hearts laid in the middle of the felt. Selbst checked and Katchalov bet 10,000. Selbst called. Them, the river card was the {10-Spades} and Selbst checked again. Katchalov bet 25,000 and Selbst tank-called.

Katchalov showed the {A-Hearts}{K-Spades} for the ace-high flush and Selbst mucked her hand.

Aces vs. Kings

Sorel Mizzi checked the {9-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} flop and Masa Kagawa bet 12,500. Behind him, Anton Allemann made the call and then Mizzi folded.

The turn was the {J-Spades} and Kagawa bet 31,000. Allemann called once more, then the dealer completed the board with the {6-Diamonds} on the river. Kagawa checked and Allemann tanked for a bit. In the end, he checked behind.

Kagawa showed the {A-Diamonds}{A-Hearts} and Allemann flashed the {K-Hearts}{K-Diamonds} to the table.
