One week ago, the European Poker Tour Sanremo, the second stop on the Season 9 schedule, kicked off with 797 players each putting up €5,300 to battle it out for poker supremacy. It was a long seven days of play, but at the end of it Ludovic Lacay captured the title, the €744,910 first-place prize, and a brand-new Shamballa Jewels bracelet.

On Thursday, the final eight players returned to the Casino Sanremo to play down to a winner. The stacks were fairly deep, so there was plenty of play to be had, and it took more than three and a half hours for the first elimination to occur. It happened when Jason Lavallee opened to 160,000 from early position and made a quick call when the Ismael Bojang three-bet all in for 1,500,000 from the next seat.

Showdown
Lavallee: {10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}
Bojang: {a-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}

It was a flip, but Bojang needed to improve. Unfortunately for him, the board ran {6-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{2-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} and the German was sent home in eighth place for €65,450. A couple of hours later, Adrian Piasecki joined him on the rail in seventh place when his {A-Clubs}{9-Clubs} failed to overcome the {A-Diamonds}{K-Clubs} of Lacay when the board ran out {q-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}.

The next to go was the sole American at the table, Micah Raskin, who opened from under the gun and called when Angelo Recchia three-bet him from the cut-off. The flop fell {8-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{j-Spades} and Raskin check-raised Recchia's 250,000 continuation-bet up to 500,000. Recchia then three-bet to 875,000, Raskin called, and the {7-Diamonds} turned. Raskin check-called a bet of 626,000, leaving himself just 330,000 behind, and the {j-Hearts} peeled off on the river. Raskin proceeded to check-call with {a-Spades}{8-Spades} full house, but it was no good as Recchia had rivered a bigger full house with {a-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}. With that, Raskin took his leave in sixth place.

The Irishman Jason Tompkins was the next to go in fifth place after his {A-Clubs}{4-Hearts} couldn’t crack the {K-Spades}{K-Hearts} of Artem Litvinov after the two got it all in preflop. A short time later, Lavalle opened to 250,000 from under the gun before Recchia moved all in for 3,495,000 from the button. Lacay was in the big blind and moved all in over the top. The action was back on Lavallee and he made a quick and disciplined fold with ace-king.

Showdown
Recchia: {a-Clubs}{7-Clubs}
Lacay: {j-Hearts}{j-Spades}

The board ran out {4-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{2-Hearts}{7-Spades}{2-Clubs} and the hope of having a home-grown champion came to an end as the last Italian in the field exited in fourth place for €225,000. After Litvinov was bounced in third place, Lacay and Lavallee, the two biggest stacks at the start of the day, engaged in heads-up play with the former holding nearly a 2-1 chip lead.

It was at that point the two struck a deal—Lacay locked up €644,910 while Lavallee guaranteed himself €538,089, which meant they were playing for €100,000 on the side. Once the numbers were settled, Lacay used his chip advantage to capture the title rather quickly.

Jason Lavallee Eliminated in 2nd Place (€538,089)

Level 31 : 60,000/120,000, 20,000 ante
Jason Lavallee
Jason Lavallee

It didn't take long for Ludovic Lacay to finish off Jason Lavallee and claim the EPT Sanremo title.

The players took to a {q-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{10-Clubs} flop where Lacay led for 175,000. Lavallee raised that up to 400,000 and called when Lacay three-bet to 750,000.

The turn was burned and turned as the {j-Hearts} and Lacay came out firing with a big 1,400,000 bet. Lavallee took his time, rechecked his cards, and then shoved for 4,905,000 chips. Lacay called very quickly and this promoted the Canadian to wince.

Lacay: {q-Clubs}{10-Hearts} for top two-pair.
Lavallee: {8-Clubs}{6-Clubs} for a flush draw.

The river fell {10-Diamonds} and Lacay had all the chips in play.

A full recap of the day's play is upcoming shortly.

Artem Litvinov Eliminated in 3rd Place (€283,000)

Artem Litvinov - 3rd Place

On a flop of {2-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{6-Spades}, Artem Litvinov moved his stack of 1,710,000 all in. Ludovic Lacay called and flipped over {8-Clubs}{6-Hearts} for top pair. Litvinov tabled {8-Spades}{7-Spades} for a monster straight flush draw.

The turn bricked out for Litvinov, however, as it brought the {10-Clubs}. Litvinov needed to fulfill his straight or flush draws, or pair his seven in order to win. Unfortunately for Litvinov, the river was the {K-Clubs} and he was sent packing in 3rd place, thrusting Lacay and Jason Lavallee into heads up play.

Angelo Recchia Eliminated in 4th Place (€225,000)

Ludovic Lacay came back to finish the job on the last remaining Italian player, Angelo Recchia.

Jason Lavalle opened to 250,000 from under the gun before Recchia moved all in for 3,495,000 from the button. Lacay was in the big blind and moved all in also. The action was back on Lavallee and he made a quick and disciplined fold with ace-king.

Recchia: {a-Clubs}{7-Clubs}
Lacay: {j-Hearts}{j-Spades}

The board ran {4-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{2-Hearts}{7-Spades}{2-Clubs} to safely see Lacay's jacks hold up. Yet again Italy's dream of having a home-grown champion is over for another season.

Jason Tompkins Eliminated in 5th Place (€171,000)

Jason Tompkins - 5th Place
Jason Tompkins - 5th Place

Action folded to Artem Litvinov who shoved all in from the button. Jason Tompkins called from the big blind and was at risk as he was the shorter stack.

Litvinov: {K-Spades}{K-Hearts}
Tompkins: {A-Clubs}{4-Hearts}

Tompkins was looking for an ace to take the lead but instead paired his lower card on the {7-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{4-Spades} flop. Tompkins had five outs going to fourth street but the {8-Diamonds} was not one of them. The {3-Hearts} completed the board and Tompkins was forced to settle for a fifth place finish.

Micah Raskin Eliminated in 6th Place (€132,000)

Micah Raskin
Micah Raskin

Angelo Recchia's great level has continued after he eliminated Micah Raskin in a hand that had the guys in the commentary box in hysterics.

Raskin opened from under the gun and called when Recchia three-bet him from the cut-off.

The flop fanned {8-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{j-Spades} and Raskin check-raised Recchia's 250,000 c-bet up to 500,000. Recchia then three-bet to 875,000 and was called.

The turn fell {7-Diamonds} and Recchia bet 626,000. Raskin check-called leaving himself with just 330,000 behind. On the {j-Hearts} river the American check-called off his remaining stack with {a-Spades}{8-Spades} for a full house. He had been rivered though as Recchia opened {a-Clubs}{j-Diamonds} for a bigger full house.

EPT Sanremo Final Table, now minus Adrian Piasecki

Ludovic Lacay has rocketed back into the chip lead after he eliminated Adrian Piasecki and took a chunk out of Jason Lavallee at the same time.

Lacay opened to 200,000 from under the gun before Piasecki moved all in for 1,455,000 from the cut off. Lavallee had a tough decision and ended up calling with {9-Clubs}{9-Hearts}, and then folding when Lacay shoved to isolate behind him.

Lacay: {a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}
Piasecki: {a-Clubs}{9-Clubs}

Lacay found himself in such an incredible spot and the {q-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds} board did not disappoint him.

Eight Remain; A Champion Sits Among Them

Ludovic Lacay Sits Second in Chips
Ludovic Lacay Sits Second in Chips

The 797 players that originally entered this tournament are now just eight. Last night the final 24 took their seats playing eight-handed over three tables to battle for a spot on the prestigious final table. By the end of the evening, Jason Lavallee held the highest chip position with seven others trailing him for the championship.

There were still plenty of notable names alive in the tournament when play began yesterday. Players like Matt Salsberg, Michael Benvenuti, and Yevgeniy Timoshenko gave it their all but were ultimately unable to earn a seat at the final table.

Others, on the other hand, thrived when the cards hit the felt. While Lavallee is the biggest stack on the table with 5.545 million, French professional Ludovic Lacay is sitting right on his heels. On the other end of the spectrum sits Artem Litvinov who will have his work cut out for him at this final table. Coming in as the short stack with only 800,000, Litvinov will have to get something going early in order to survive this final table.
