Feddersen Goes Long to Capture the Day 1a Chip Lead at EPT Deauville

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Jesper Feddersen
Jesper Feddersen

It’s Northern Europe in the middle of winter; we’re in a town in semi-hibernation and famed for horse race meets and film festivals during warmer months of the year. Did we mention it’s hard to get to? Can someone enlighten us why we came here again? Ah yes, it’s to return to one of the best value tournaments on the poker calendar – the PokerStars.fr EPT Deauville! To be fair the town is chocolate box beautiful as well.

The French Poker Series (FPS) kicked off this poker festival a few days ago and boasted record-breaking numbers in their events. Today Day 1a of the main event drew 307 players, which is a little less than hoped for. Seeing as its Sunday for those who can play on PokerStars.fr and the fact that some small sporting event is taking place in New Orleans we expect tomorrow’s field to be nearly twice as big.

This didn’t mean there wasn’t lots of talent on show today. Leading the way for most of the second half of day was Patrick Schuhl, who bagged up 142,700 chips. His biggest pot win of the day saw his pocket queens help him to eliminate two players - holding pocket aces and ace-king respectively – after he made a set on the river. He was pipped to the chip-leading post by Jesper Feddersen who finished clear of the field with 188,900. The PokerStars qualifier finished with a flourish, eliminating Stelyan Georgiev right at play’s death. The Bulgarian called off his stack over three streets with {A-Spades}{4-Hearts} on a {3-Spades}{6-Spades}{5-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{6-Clubs} board only to find Feddersen had back-doored into quads with {7-Spades}{6-Hearts}.

Afterwards Feddersen informed us this was only his third live tournament having played one last year as practice and the FPS a couple of days ago. Mainly an online player, he qualified on PokerStars after accidentally registering but now he's top of the pack after Day 1a!

Other players who will enjoy tomorrow’s rest day knowing they have a good day’s work in the books are: Zimnan Ziiyard (121,000), Christophe Lesage (115,700), Jeff Hakim (114,700), Sergii Baranov (103,800), James Mitchell (102,700) and Team PokerStars Pro Matthias De Meulder 98,300.

Life’s all about equilibrium though, right? Poker life is like that too - for those to gain others have to lose. Dimitar Danchev could tell you all about that. The most recent EPT winner – from PCA a couple of weeks ago – saw the other side of the variance that exists in this beautiful yet painful game. He lost a chip-leading pot, and subsequently his tournament life, when his pocket aces were cracked by the pocket kings of Antoine Saout.

He was joined in the locker room by Jon Spinks, Martin Staszko, Nocholas Chouity, David Vamplew, Eugene Katchalov and Marcin Horecki.

The last two on this list were the other two Team PokerStars Pros in action today. Katchalov’s stack headed south from the off and never made its way back up to Normandy. Horecki had a very up and down day. He dropped to 6,000 chips early on before making a great recovery. Then he played a pot with the larger than life character of Baranov where the latter three-bet pre flop and bet every street on a {3-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{4-Hearts} board. Horecki confidently called all the way down only to be shown {6-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} by Baranov! His fate was sealed soon after.

We do the same all over again tomorrow when a bumper and star-studded field will take to the baize for eight 75-minute levels. As per normal the play will start at 12pm CET and the PokerNews reporting team will be there throughout 12 more hours of poker action. Until its goodnight from France. Enjoy the Super Bowl!

Duhamel Done

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante
Jonathan Duhamel
Jonathan Duhamel

Sinel Anton opened to 650 preflop and Jonathan Duhamel came in with a three-bet to roughly 1,400 before it was passed back to the Romanian who decided to simply move all in for about 20,000. Duhamel had about 16,000 in total and took a couple of minutes before opting to call off his chips for his tournament life.

Anton: {A-Clubs}{A-Hearts}
Duhamel: {9-Clubs}{9-Hearts}

The board came a nineless {K-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{J-Clubs} and the Canadian Team PokerStars Pro was eliminated.

Schuhl Takes Kamand

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante
Patrick Schuhl
Patrick Schuhl

Patrick Schuhl has had a productive afternoon, having pushed his stack up well over 100,000 as we move through Level 5.

Just now Schuhl was in action again following an opponent's raise to 825 from early position. Schuhl called the raise from a couple of seats over, then Najib Kamand reraised to 2,575 from the hijack seat. It folded back to the original raiser who folded, but after a recheck of his cards Schuhl grabbed chips as if to reraise back, then called.

Kamand looked at Schuhl with a wry grin as the flop came {K-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}. Schuhl checked, Kamand continued for 3,200, and Schuhl again rechecked his cards before calling. No grin came from Kamand that time. And when the {Q-Diamonds} fell on the turn and Schuhl bet 8,500, Kamand's expression had turned to one of quiet resolve as he tossed his hand away.

The cowboy-hat wearing Schuhl adds still more, and appears to be sporting the biggest stack in the room at the moment.

When the Cohen Gets Tough...

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante
"I'm in the mood for dancing..."
"I'm in the mood for dancing..."

Lucien Cohen won this event two years ago beating Martin Jacobson and he's just managed to double up here.

Cohen had moved all in on the river of a {10-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{A-Spades}{6-Hearts}{4-Spades} board against Janos Nagygyorgy. Cohen, as befitting his nature, then proceeded to stand up and began dancing in the manner that could only be described as "Your dad at a wedding".

Cohen's dancing skills clearly seduced Nagygyorgy into making the call and Cohen flipped {8-Spades}{8-Hearts} for a flopped set before shouting out very loudly, "I am the best in the world! I am the best in the world!"

Cohen went back from the previous "feigning apprehension to induce a call dance" to a brand new "victory dance" - the latter he performed fairly quickly as it seemed as though the floor was heading over in an attempt to calm him down.

Cohen has 50,000.

Katchalov Crushed

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante
Eugene Katchalov
Eugene Katchalov

Team PokerStars Pro Eugene Katchalov’s tournament has come to an abrupt end at the hands of Antonio Subtil.

Katchalov did not have the best of days and had been down to around 5,000 chips for the past level or so. This short-stack found itself in the middle of the felt after a brief preflop raising war with Subtil, Katchalov holding {9-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} and Subtil the far stronger {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}.

The all-diamond {4-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} flop caused a few gasps from those seated next to Katchalov, but the gaspers soon realized Katchalov’s diamond outs were dead due to Subtil holding the {Q-Diamonds} in his hand. This meant Katchalov was drawing to one of the two remaining nines in the deck, the {2-Clubs} on the turn was not one of them, and neither was the {Q-Hearts} on the river. Katchalov is gone.

Rousso Riles Boujenah

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante
Vanessa Rousso & Liv Boeree
Vanessa Rousso & Liv Boeree

Team PokerStars Pro Vanessa Rousso has just taken her seat here in the main event and she has already rubbed up fiery Israeli Ilan Boujenah.

It was Pavel Sebesta who opened the betting with a raise to 300 from middle position, but little did he know this would start a chain of events that with end with Boujenah being riled. Rousso called that 300 raise from late position and to her left was Boujenah and he call also. The preflop round was completed when Eric Sadoun called in the small blind and the big blind folded.

The draw-heavy {4-Clubs}{7-Spades}{8-Clubs} flop prompted a check from Sadoun, a bet of 750 from Sebesta and a call from Rousso. Boujenah raised the stakes by making it 2,400 to play, forcing Sadoun and Sebesta out of the pot, but Rousso called.

The turn was the {3-Spades} and Rousso tapped the table and checked. Boujenah bet 4,600 and Rousso called after just a few seconds of deliberation. The river was the flush-completing {9-Clubs} was greeted with a bet of 9,000 from Rousso, which angered Boujenah no end. Boujenah removed his headphones and slammed them onto the felt in frustration more than anything else, before saying an ElkY-esque phrase, “So sick!”

For the next six minutes Boujenah replayed the hand over and over in his head, muttered under his breath and was in disbelief that Rousso – in his opinion – had check called the turn with a flush draw. In the midst of all this, Rousso’s fellow Team Pro Liv Boeree approached the rail and Boujenah asked, “Is she capable of donkey bluffs?” to the amusement of everyone.

A few minutes later Banjamin Juhasz called the clock on Boujenah, but the floor staff were not required because Boujenah folded, showing the {6-Spades}{5-Spades} as he did. Rousso’s cards hit the muck in record time and Boujenah went off to discuss the hand with Miss Boeree.

A New Day in Deauville

Players Party
Players Party

Welcome to the northwestern coastal city of Deauville, France where the skies are blue and the temperatures chilly. It's comfortably warm inside the Casino Barrière, however, as staff and dealers currently prep themselves for the entrance of hundreds of poker players. And about a half-hour from now things will be heating up considerably more when cards go in the air for the first of two Day 1 flights of the PokerStars.fr EPT Deauville Main Event.

Vadzim Kursevich of Belarus came away with the Main Event title here in Deauville last year, topping a field of 889 to claim a handsome €875,000 first prize. Most anticipate a similarly-sized turnout for this year's €5,000+€300 buy-in Main Event, with most of Europe's best plus many others from around the world expected to take part in this increasingly popular EPT stop.

Play begins at noon local time, with the schedule calling for eight 75-minute levels with a dinner break coming after Level 6. Join us then for the start of our coverage, and stick with us all week as we watch and discover who will be the next EPT champion.
