EPT Deauville Day 3: Shahaf Hadaya Leads The Way

Level 19 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Shahaf Hadaya
Shahaf Hadaya

Day 3 of the PokerStars.fr European Poker Tour Deauville main event has been written into the history books after five 90-minute levels were completed inside the Casino Barriere. At the start of play there were 154 players in the field, but by the time the curtain came down on the day’s proceedings just 51 remained. The title of overnight chip leader went to Shahaf Hadaya who ended the day with 1,237,000 chips.

With the top 120 places being paid in this event there were 34 players who exited the tournament today without receiving any prize money. Some of those who fell before the money bubble burst included Ana Marquez, Steve O’Dwyer, Dermot Blain and Team PokerStars Pro Vanessa Rousso.

The bubble burst as the players headed out for refreshments at the very end of Level 16, Said Basri being the unfortunate soul to finish in 121st place. Basri’s final hand saw Christophe Lesage open to 8,000 preflop, David Susigan and Basri tossed in his last 10,500 into the pot. Yury Gulyy called and both Lesage and Susigan called the under-raise. The active players checked down the {8-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{a-Clubs} board, Susigan’s {A-Spades}{5-Spades} being the hand responsible for sending Basri to the rail.

Basri’s demise meant everyone else had locked up a payday of at least €8,000. Marion Nedellec was the first player to head to the cash desk, Team PokerStars Pro Sandra Naujoks was not too far behind her, while Naujoks' fellow Team Pro Matthias De Meulder managed to climb the pay ladder slightly – his 75th place finish was worth €9,700.

Our overnight chip leader will sleep easy tonight knowing he is on course for his largest career cash. Hadaya, an Israeli national, has a handful of live tournament cashes, the largest topping the scales at $30,920. Currently, he is guaranteed to leave Deauville with at least €13,500 ($18,250) for his efforts, but if he manages to navigate his way through tomorrow’s Day 4 then he will secure a €23,000 ($31,100). There is of course the not-so-small matter of a €770,000 ($1,041,325) prize awaiting our eventual champion.

Starting Day 4 within touching distance of Hadaya are the likes of Matthieu Herve (1,050,000 chips), British duo Sam Grafton (985,000) and James Mitchell (983,000) and our sole Australia representative James Bills (877,000). Other players to look out for on Friday include Jeffrey Hakim (714,000), Mathew Frankland (606,000), Gordon Huntly (387,000), Jason Koon (386,000), Kristijonas Andrulis (365,000) and our last two remaining former EPT champions Salvatore Bonavena (321,000) and Lucien Cohen (209,000).

Day 4 kicks off at 12:00CET on Friday and PokerNews will be on the tournament floor bringing you all the action as it happens. Until then, it is good night from Deauville!

Boucher Busted

Level 19 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Philippe Boucher
Philippe Boucher

Philippe Boucher and Alexander Dovzhenko got all their chips in the middle on a {J-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{4-Hearts} flop, Boucher holding {J-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} but Dovzhenko had {J-Spades}{10-Spades}. There was a chink of light at the end of a particularly dark tunnel when the {8-Spades} came on the turn but the {Q-Hearts} river gave the pot to the Russian.

There was a countdown and Dovzhenko just had Boucher covered by a couple of big blinds. A shake of hands and the French-Canadian headed off to the payout desk.

Ziyard Destroyed

Level 18 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Zimnan Ziyard
Zimnan Ziyard

Zimnan Ziyard seemed to be in the zone for a lot of this tournament and many observers were predicting a deep EPT run once again for the former champion. It's not to be after a very bad passage of play that's left him feeling, "Destroyed" as he described it and on the rail.

He shoved the last of his chips in from the small blind with {8-Clubs}{9-Clubs} and the big blind called with {k-Hearts}{q-Hearts}. Both players flopped open-ended straight draws on the J-T-X flop and the turn brought about a second club giving Ziyard flush outs. He made a pair on the nine river but the card made his opponent a winning straight.

Rudelitz Rudely Douses Mattionfire

Level 18 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Matthias De Meulder
Matthias De Meulder

Lone remaining Team PokerStars Pro Matthias de Meulder just saw his EPT Deauville Main Event run come to an end in 75th place following a hand versus the German, [Removed:4].

All of de Meulder's chips went in on the river with the board showing {8-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{3-Spades}, with Rudelitz snap-calling de Meulder's final bet. The Belgian pro had a pair of aces, but Rudelitz showed a winner with {8-Clubs}{8-Diamonds} for set of eights.

De Meulder adds a postscript from his @mattionfire Twitter account, echoing the sentiment of all of those falling shy of the big payouts to come:

Cohen Doubles, Faure Attempts Table Breakage

Level 18 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Lucien Cohen's rat
Lucien Cohen's rat

Lucien Cohen has lived a charmed life today. The Frenchman, a winner here in Season 7, was just all in preflop for 130,000 with {Q-Hearts}{Q-Spades} against Nicolas Faure's {K-Spades}{K-Diamonds}.

Cohen started shouting in French and waving his rat around (Note: that is not a euphemism). The flop came down {Q-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} and Cohen shouted once more in delight, the {7-Spades} and {6-Hearts} river missed Faure's pair and flush draw and the latter banged the table incredibly hard with his fist.

At this point Cohen started dancing and singing again as the dealer counted out his stack. "I am the rat! I am the rat man," he shouted, this time in English.

Faure loudly banged the table again while Cohen danced around some more, capping off the act with several pelvic thrusts.

Ziyard Suffering One-Round Penalty

Level 18 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Zimnan Ziyard
Zimnan Ziyard

Former EPT Champion Zimnan Ziyard has been given a one-round penalty after exposing his cards out of turn.

During the last round, Ziyard opened to 10,500 preflop before Massimo Di Cicco raised all in for 42,500. The action went over to big blind Joseph Mouawad who was protecting his cards, but before he could act Ziyard folded out of turn.

Mouawad now announced call but unsuccessfully raced his {3-Clubs}{3-Spades} against Di Cicco's {A-Clubs}{7-Clubs} when the board came {9-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}{5-Spades}{9-Spades}.

The floor ruled that Ziyard's action had changed what occurred and that Mouawad would have been unlikely to call if there was a player still to act behind him. As a result Ziyard got a one-round penalty, despite protestations from the EPT Loutraki champion that he should only get a warning.

No Help for Naujoks

Level 17 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Sandra Naujoks
Sandra Naujoks

Team PokerStars Pro Sandra Naujoks has been eliminated. Short-stacked, she moved all in preflop with {K-Spades}{10-Diamonds} and was called by Pascal Leyo with {A-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}. The door card was an ace and although Naujoks picked up a gutshot, she couldn't hit it on the {A-Hearts}{J-Spades}{2-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}{5-Hearts} board.

This leaves Matthias De Meulder as the only remaining Team Pro still in the tournament.
