Big Slick Hiccup

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante

Lucien Cohen (I prefer the films of his brothers to be honest) opened to just over 1,000 before Joep van den Bijgaart moved all in for just under 9,000. Cohen asked for a count but then called anyway.

Cohen: {A-}{K-}
van den Bijgaart: {2-Diamonds}{2-Spades}

The board came {2-}{3-}{5-}{J-}{K-} and the former champion suffered a dent to his stack as the Dutchman doubled.

Railward They Go

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante

The big board is showing the total players from our starting field of 307 still alive here on Day 1a has now shrunk to less than 200. There is about one more hour of play left in Level 8, after which the remaining players will bag up for the night.

Lowly Fives Good For Mateos

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante

Our excellent collegue Shamus wrote an entry about Adrian Mateos a short while ago and it appears Mateos' good week is continuing if his latest hand is anything to go by.

On a {4-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{8-Spades}{Q-Clubs} board, Mateos lead out for 3,100 in middle position and Ismael Bojang called from the button. The fifth and final community card was the {2-Spades} and now Mateos checked. Bojang, possibly sensing weakness, took a stab at the pot with a bet of 6,500 but Mateos convinced himself his hand was good and he called.

"Ace-high," said Bojand turning over {A-Hearts}{7-Hearts}.

Mateos remained silent as he flipped the {5-Clubs} and {5-Diamonds} onto their backs. Another pot goes Mateos' way.

Schuhl Maintaining Position; Using His Big Stack

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante

Patrick Schuhl is still up the top of the counts although still down a little from his high point of 170,000.

He called an early position raise to 600 from Stephane Bourson along with three other players. Bourson continued for 2,600 on the {6-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{6-Hearts} flop and Schuhl was the only caller to the {4-Hearts} turn where both players checked. The river came down as {4-Hearts} and Bourson checked to face a 15,000 bet, enough to cover his remaining stack. He elected to cut his losses and fold.

Heinzelmann Eliminates [Removed:250]

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante

Max Heinzelmann has just sent Isaac [Removed:250] to the rail after winning one of tournament poker's many coinflips.

It was Heinzelmann who opened the betting with a raise from early position. Ismael Bojang called in the hijack and [Removed:250] moved all in for around 6,500 on the button. Hinzelmann called and Bojang folded.

Heinzelmann: {2-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}
[Removed:250]: {A-Clubs}{K-Spades}

The {10-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{4-Spades} flop kept the deuces of Heinzelmann in front, and when the turn and river were the {8-Spades} and {8-Hearts} respectively it was game over for [Removed:250].

Rettenmaier Makes Big Fold

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante

With the board reading {J-Clubs}{6-Spades}{9-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} Remi Le Muer bet 18,600 into a pot with about 20,000 already in it.

Marvin Rettenmaier was his opponent and tanked for several minutes, staring intently at the Frenchman, eventually letting it go.

"I almost folded the turn," said Rettenmaier, "when you said, 'let's play some poker.'"

Mitchell Moving Up

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
James Mitchell
James Mitchell

James Mitchell opened with a raise to 1,200 from the cutoff seat and got two callers from the blinds, including Sinel Anton in the small blind. The flop came {8-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} and it checked around to Mitchell who bet 2,600. Only Anton called. Both remaining players then checked the {5-Hearts} turn card.

The river brought the {6-Spades}. Anton quickly picked chips off his stack and tossed them forward for a bet of 3,100. Then Mitchell, moving more deliberately, carved out a substantial stack to raise and instantly Anton tossed his cards away.

Ruud Awakening

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante

Ruud van Lanen has just eliminated Bernard Hery with the old case of {A-Spades}{A-Hearts} besting {K-Diamonds}{K-Clubs} all in preflop with the board coming {3-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}{3-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}.

Elsewhere, we've lost Paul Berende who flopped a set but lost to a straight-flush draw that managed to spike.
