Carmelo Crucitti Leads After Day 1a of the EPT12 Malta Main Event

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Carmelo Crucitti leads the pack!
Carmelo Crucitti leads the pack!

It was a big day of action for the European Poker Tour Malta as the €25K High Roller played down to a champion – which you can read about by clicking here – and the €5,300 Main Event kicked off inside the Portomaso Casino.

The first of two starting flights attracted 184 runners, and while that number may not have been overly impressive, the quality of the field was as some of the biggest names in the game took their shot on Day 1a. That's due in no small part to the single-day €10K High Roller scheduled to run at the same time as Day 1b.

After eight 75-minute levels of play, 108 players remained with Italy's Carmelo Crucitti and his stack of 163,000 leading the way. Others who bagged big stacks were Mikko Turtiainen (136,400), Noah Vaillancourt (125,800), and Ferdinand Le Pichon (117,500).

As for Vaillancourt, he had the distinction of busting accomplished pro Connor Drinan. It happened in Level 6 (200/400/50) when Drinan raised to 1,000 from the hijack and Vaillancourt just flat-called.

On the {Q-}{7-}{4-} flop, Drinan continued for 1,600 and was called before the {3-} on the turn saw another barrel worth 4,100. Again Vaillancourt just called and an {A-} completed the board on the river. Drinan fired 8,400 and then called off his stack only to muck once Vaillancourt turned over pocket queens for a set.

Long before that, in the first level in fact, is when the first elimination occurred. It happened after a player opened for 300 and Michael Wang called from the button. The player in the small blind came along, and then Alessandro Barone three-bet to 1,300 from the big blind.

The original raiser folded, Wang called with the {6-Hearts}{4-Hearts}, and the small blind got out of the way to make it heads-up action to the {6-}{4-}{9-} flop. Barone led out for 3,000, Wang raised to 7,800, and Barone shipped all in with what turned out to be aces. Wang made the call and held as both the turn and river bricked.

With that, Barone became the first elimination of the tournament, while Wang nearly doubled his starting stack. Unfortunately for him, it did little good as he went on to bust in the penultimate level of the night.

Others who saw their journey cut short on Day 1a were Jonathan Roy, Stephen Chidwick, Fedor Holz, Shaun Deeb, Oleksii Khoroshenin, Marvin Rettenmaier, John Juanda, Martin Finger, Patrik Antonius, and Ole Schemion.

Schemion, who flew into Malta early in the afternoon, fell in Level 6 (200/400/50) when Johan Guilbert opened for 800 from the hijack and the German wunderkind called from the small blind. Bernhard Haider did the same from the big and three players took a flop of {j-Spades}{q-Spades}{10-Hearts}. Two checks saw Guilbert bet 1,600, and both his opponents called.

After the dealer burned and turned the {3-Spades}, Schemion checked for a second time and Haider seized the initiative by betting 3,800. Guilbert called, and then Schemion sprung to life with an all-in check-raise to 11,625 total. Haider just called, which prompted Guilbert to ditch his hand.

Schemion: {k-Clubs}{9-Clubs}
Haider: {k-Spades}{4-Spades}

Schemion had flopped the straight, but he was drawing dead as Haider turned a flush. The meaningless {K-Diamonds} was put out on the river to make it official, and Schemion wished the table luck before heading to the exit.

While droves of notables fell, plenty punched their ticket to Day 2 including [Removed:17] (97,875), Thomas Muehloecker (93,200), Niall Farrell (92,300), Steve O'Dwyer (90,600), Dominik Panka (81,400), Anthony Zinno (76,500), Adrian Mateos (72,200), and PokerStars' Jennifer Shahade (51,300), Ike Haxton (23,500), Jason Mercier (14,700), and Jake Cody (8,600). Meanwhile, Team PokerStars Pro Ivan Demidov met his demise on Day 1a.

Day 1b will kick off at Noon local time on Monday, while the aforementioned €10K Single-Day High Roller will follow a half hour later. Of course the PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be on hand for both to bring you all the latest and greatest from the floor of the Portomaso Casino.

While you wait, take a tour of St. Julian's here in Malta:

"Well That Was Embarrassing" (Buonanno Doubles)

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Charlie Carrel
Charlie Carrel

As we arrived Antonio Buonanno already had all of his 14,725 chips in the middle from the under the gun position. Charlie Carrel on the button had 4,300 in front of him and was now tanking about whether or not to add the 10,425 to call.

Carrel asked his Italian opponent if he wanted a call. "You must call! It's like 11,000" Buonanno answered. "It appears so that I must" Carrel agreed, though not sounding too certain. He clearly was caught with his hand in the cookie jar and admitted to not have too good a hand. Carrel then asked to pull in the 4,300 to see how much he exactly needed to call, and did so in the end.

Charlie Carrel: {A-Spades}{2-Hearts}
Antonio Buonanno: {3-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}

The flop came {8-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}, not brining much of anything for Carrel. The {8-Spades} on the turn gave the Brit a bunch of outs to counterfeit Buonanno, but the {7-Spades} on the river was a blank and the Grand Final champion doubled up.

"Well that was embarrassing" Carrel said with a big smile. He focused his attention to us and instructed "None of that writing down stuff!" But it was too late because we had already written everything down and weren't ready to say good bye to our beautiful notes of a brilliantly played hand.

"Thank you" Buonanno said. "You're welcome" said the ever so friendly Carrel.

Mercier Goes Runner-Runner to Crack Aces and Stay Alive

Level 6 : 200/400, 50 ante
Jason Mercier
Jason Mercier

After Andrew Chen opened with a raise from middle position, Team PokerStars Pro Jason Mercier three-bet jammed for 9,300 total from the hijack. Action folded back to Chen, who snap-called.

Chen: {a-Spades}{a-Hearts}
Mercier: {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}

Mercier couldn't help but laugh, and watched as the flop fell {7-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{q-Spades}. Mercier needed to go runner-runner to survive, and the {J-Diamonds} turn made it a real possibility by giving him both Broadway and flush draws.

Well, you've seen the title to this post, so you can guess what happened. The dealer burned and put out the {7-Diamonds}!

"Gotta make sure you're suited," Mercier said with a big smile.

Soulier Takes a Nice One Off Hochman

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante
Fabrice Soulier
Fabrice Soulier

Nicholas Palma opened the action with a raise to 700 from middle position. Corey Hochman called, Fabrice Soulier did the same from the cutoff, and [Removed:17] came along from the big blind to make it four-way action to the {a-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{9-Clubs} flop.

Two checks saw Hochman bet 700, Soulier called, and Yan got out of the way. Palma peeled one more, and ended up checking the {8-Diamonds} turn. Hochman bet again, this time 2,225, and only Soulier called to see the {J-Clubs} river.

Hochman paused for a few moments before betting 3,675, and Soulier responded by raising to 10,575. Hochman hit the tank for nearly two minutes before making the call, but mucked when Soulier tabled the {5-Clubs}{5-Spades} for a flopped set.

Meanwhile, Hyunwoo Kang has been eliminated from the tournament.

Former WPT Champ Jonathan Roy the Second to Fall

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante

World Poker Tour champ Jonathan Roy just became the second player eliminated from the EPT12 Malta Main Event.

According to Niall Farrell, who did the deed, it happened when Roy opened for 450 from early position and he looked him up with the {a-Hearts}{4-Hearts} from the button. The {8-}{3-}{2-} rainbow flop saw Roy continue for 525, Farrell call, and the dealer burn and turn the {5-Diamonds}.

Roy checked, Farrell bet 750 with the wheel, and his Canadian opponent check-raised to 3,200. Farrell just flatted and the harmless {10-Clubs} completed the board on the river. Roy bet a hefty 10,200, and Farrell, holding the nuts, moved all in.

Roy hit the tank for a bit, but eventually called off holding {5-}{5-} for a losing set.

The Second-Ever EPT Malta Main Event About to Get Underway with Day 1a Action

EPT Malta
EPT Malta

Welcome to Day 1 of the EPT12 Malta Main Event!

The EPT first visited Portomaso Casino back in March for what turned out to be a Season 11 highlight. That stop saw the emergence of Dzmitry Urbanovich, who won four side events — including the €25,000 High Roller – on his way to becoming the EPT11 Player of the Year; David Peters walked away with €597,000 after winning the €10,000 High Roller; and 41-year-old former pool champ, Jean Montury, made history by becoming the first-ever EPT Malta champ.

To do so, the Frenchman topped a field of 895 players – which created a €4,340,750 prize pool – and took home a €687,400 first-place prize along with a SLYDE championship watch. Be it today's starting flight or tomorrow's Day 1b, Montury is sure to attempt a title defense.

Others expected to take their shot at the second EPT stop of Season 12 are Team PokerStars Pros Jake Cody, Luca Pagano, Jason Mercier, Andre Akkari and Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier; as well as PokerStars SportStar Fatima Moreira de Melo and Team Online's Mickey Petersen and Ike Haxton.

Some other well-known pros spotted at the festival throughout the week include EPT12 Barcelona champ John Juanda, former EPT Grand Final winners Steve O'Dwyer and Mohsin Charania, Australian Jeff Rossiter; New Zealander [Removed:17]; recent World Series of Poker Europe bracelet winner Dietrich Fast; reigning World Poker Tour Player of the Year Anthony Zinno; WSOP APAC champ Scott Davies; and Americans Chris Hunichen, Shaun Deeb, and Connor Drinan, just to name a few.

Day 1a of the EPT12 Main Event will kick off at Noon local time, which is about 90 minutes from now. The plan for the day is to play eight 75-minute levels, meaning players, who'll each start with 30,000 in chips, is in store for a 12-hour day.

The PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be there every step of the way, so be sure to stay tuned for updates straight from the floor of the EPT Malta Main Event. Also, don't forget to check out the final table of the €10,000 High Roller, which you can check out by clicking here.
