Last Season's European Poker Tour Player of the Year, Poland's Dzmitry Urbanovich, won the 2016 PokerStars EPT Season 12 Dublin Main Event at the Royal Dublin Society Saturday night.

Urbanovich, who cleaned up in the high roller events in Season 11, won his first EPT Main Event title and the €561,900 first-place prize that came along with it, ultimately finishing atop a field of 605 players in Ireland's capital.

Gilles Bernies, the man Urbanovich defeated in heads-up play, is a part-time poker player, student, and DJ from Germany. He went through the event breathing heavily and taking his time throughout all the hands he played. The 27-year-old Bernies took a massive lead into heads-up play, but could not deny the young Polish phenom the title.

Six players returned Saturday afternoon to battle for the EPT Dublin crown, eight years after the last time the tour stopped in the city. Within the first few hands of six-handed play, the United Kingdom's Rhys Jones shoved short and was eliminated by the chip-leading Urbanovich in sixth place.

Some 34 hands later, Greek player and Twitch streamer Ilios Kamatakis ran second pair into Bernies' top pair, top kicker to say goodbye in fifth place.

Bernies then took a big chip lead by winning a massive flip against Urbanovich a few hands later, and only increased that lead as four-handed play continued.

Eventually, Bernies picked up queens and picked off the event's final Irishman, Patrick Clarke, with a weak ace. Exactly one hand after Clarke busted in fourth, Kully Sidhu took a race for all his chips with ace-six versus Bernies fives and missed, finishing third.

Bernies took a massive 4-1 lead into heads-up play with Urbanovich, but Urbanovich doubled through early on, flopping a straight and getting paid off with a river shove to jump right back into contention.

Then, Urbanovich took a big lead of his own when he flopped a pair and a flush draw and Bernies got out of line shoving with four-high. Bernies defied domination to double back through, but Urbanovich continued to lead.

It wasn't long before Bernies grinded back to about even and the two took a 30-minute dinner break. When they came back, it went back and forth for a good while before Urbanovich took the lead for the final time. Bernies shoved a flush draw into Urbanovich's trip aces and hit the flush on the river, but that card also gave Urbanovich a full house.

Urbanovich, having won four side events at EPT Malta in Season 11, finished runner-up in the €100,000 Super High Roller at the Grand Final, and having started off Season 12 with another super high roller runner-up finish in Barcelona, finished off Bernies rather quickly. He first extended his lead and then found pocket kings when Bernies shoved queen-high to book his first EPT main event win and end the EPT Season 12 Dublin poker festival in style.

With that, PokerNews' coverage from EPT Dublin has come to a close, but there is still one more big, bad stop left on the European Poker Tour for Season 12. That's the Grand Final in Monaco to take place April 25 through May 6. Coming hard with 79 tournaments, it's going to be an exciting affair and one PokerStars deems the "biggest and best yet" for an EPT stop. PokerNews will be there, and we hope to see you there, too!

Gilles Bernies Eliminated in 2nd Place (€349,800)

Level 32 : 80,000/160,000, 20,000 ante
Gilles Bernies
Gilles Bernies

Hand #156: On the button, Bernies found {Q-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} and shoved all in for about 2 million. Urbanovich instantly called with {K-Spades}{K-Diamonds}!

With 4,050,000 in the middle, the flop came {7-Spades}{4-Clubs}{5-Spades}. Bernies hit his seven but needed more help than just that. His 18% hand was worth only 11% after the {9-Diamonds} hit the turn.

Bernies needed a queen or seven on the river to survive, but instead the {9-Spades} completed the board.

Bernies had to settle for second place, worth €349,800.

Hand #110: From the button, Dzmitry Urbanovich made it 225,000 with {8-Spades}{5-Spades}. Gilles Bernies with the {4-Diamonds}{2-Spades} three-bet to 575,000. Urbanovich called.

The flop came {8-Hearts}{J-Spades}{K-Spades} making Urbanovich the heavy favorite. Bernies bet 625,000 into 1,170,000. Urbanovich, with a 98% hand but no way of knowing it of course, asked how much it was and went into the tank. Eventually he raised to 1,475,000, leaving himself 5,460,000 behind. Bernies pushed all in and Urbanovich called just about instantly.

15,040,000 in the pot and Bernies had just 2% equity. The {7-Clubs} on the turn was a blank and left Bernies drawing dead, the {6-Clubs} on the river was meaningless and Urbanovich doubled up.

Bernies bet 200,000 and Urbanovich raised, making it 650,000. Bernies called and the turn was the {7-Clubs}. Urbanovich led out for 915,000 and Bernies called again.

Finally, Urbanovich shoved all in on for 1,785,000 on the {5-Clubs} river and Bernies got a count before making the call, allowing Urbanovich to double back into contention.

Hand #95: Gilles Bernies shoved with the {5-Hearts}{5-Clubs}. Kully Sidhu made the call from the big blind holding {A-Hearts}{6-Hearts} in a hand with a big blind only.

The flop came {7-Spades}{J-Spades}{4-Hearts} and Sidhu said "I'll take a five for a sweat"

The noticeably nervous Gilles Bernies said he would take the five right now.

The {2-Clubs} on the turn was a blank, and so was the {2-Spades} on the river and Kully Sidhu made his exit in third place, taking home €250,300 and leaving Dzmitry Urbanovich and Gilles Bernies to it for the title.

Hand #49: In the small blind, Gilles Bernies woke up with {A-Spades}{Q-Spades} and he limped in with his 3.92 million stack. In the big blind, Dzmitry Urbanovich with the {8-Spades}{8-Hearts} raised to 300,000. Bernies came back with a raise, 3-betting to 905,000. Urbanovich shoved all in and Bernies let out a big sigh. He thought about it for a bit, and ultimately called.

The pot was 7,950,000 and it was a classic race!

The flop came {K-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{5-Spades}, making Urbanovich the 71% favorite. The {A-Hearts} on the turn shifted the equity to Bernies, now a 95% favorite. The river {J-Spades} on the river made Bernies cheer with his friends on the rail, he doubled to the position of chipleader!

Ilios Kamatakis

Hand #37: Dzmitry Urbanovich called from the small blind with the {5-Spades}{2-Spades} and Patrick Clarke checked his option with the {a-Diamonds}{6-Spades}. Urbanovich bet the {10-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{5-Diamonds} flop and Clarke called. They both checked the {9-Clubs} turn, and after Urbanovich also checked the {8-Hearts} river, Clarke bet. Urbanovich folded.

Hand #38: Ilios Kamatakis rasied it up to 150,000 under the gun with the {k-Spades}{9-Spades}. Gilles Bernies woke up with the {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds} and called behind him. They went heads up to a {q-Spades}{9-Hearts}{5-Diamonds} flop where Kamatakis led for 275,000. Bernies raised it up to 650,000 and Kamatakis pushed all in. Bernies made the call after getting a count.

The {3-Hearts} turn and {3-Diamonds} river were no good for Kamatakis and he hit the rail fifth.

Hand #4: Dzmitry Urbanovich raised it up from early position to 110,000 and after it folded to him in the big blind, Rhys Jones pushed in for 720,000.

Urbanovich made the call with the {a-Clubs}{10-Clubs} dominating Jones' {a-Spades}{9-Hearts}. Things only got worse for Jones on the {10-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{5-Hearts} flop, and although he hit the {9-Diamonds} turn, the {a-Diamonds} river could not save him.

Jones hit the rail sixth collecting €119,450 while Urbanovich increased his lead.
