Niall Farrell Does Best on Day 1 of the €25,750 High Roller

Level 10 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Niall Farrell

The 2016 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo® Casino EPT Grand Final is getting closer and closer to it's ultimate denouement, and now it was time for the last big tournament to start. The €25,750 High Roller had a bigger first-place prize than the Main Event last year, and it looks like that's going to be repeated this year.

Last year, when Charlie Carrel took home the trophy and €1.114 million first-place prize, a total of 215 entries were made. After Day 1 today, the number is already at 220 (173 uniques and 47 reentries), and registration will remain open till the start of play on Day 2.

It started out relatively quiet with just six tables, but soon enough there was a buzz in the air and the sound of chips being riffled took over the beautiful tournament room. After the dinner break, it was getting pretty warm where the tournament was being held, and organizers decided to open the roof. That was the first the roof was opened while play was underway, and the "ooohs" and "aaahs" must have been hearable all the way over in the harbor, and even some applause errupted.

Players had the option to do a single reentry if busted, and more than one made use of that option. Mikita Badziakouski and Isaac Haxton were the first to do so, busting their first bullet well before the bulk had even started. Both did well on their second though, as we'll see Haxton (67,000) and Badziakouski (127,200) back on Day 2.

Carrel won't be, and he will not be going back to back after busting two bullets today. The same goes for the likes of Leon Tsoukernik, Sean Winter, Fabian Quoss, and Fedor Holz.

Things went better for Niall Farrell, who bagged the chip lead with 311,200 in chips. Other big stacks included Enrico Coppola (302,100), Saar Wilf (288,000), Dong Zhao (278,900), David Dayan (272,900), Dan Smith (272,500), and Ivan Luca (271,300). All told, there were 96 survivors following Day 1, but with registration and reentry open, the field will likely get a boost before the cards are in the air on Thursday.

A lot of the usual suspects are also still in, with the likes of Ole Schemion (20,400), Erik Seidel (177,300), Daniel Negreanu (136,700), Jason Mercier (54,900), and Dzmitry Urbanovich (38,600) some of those left to battle on Day 2.

PokerNews.com will again be on site to give you coverage of Day 2 of the €25,750 High Roller. There are another 10 levels on the schedule, or down to a final table of eight players, whichever comes faster. The first level to be played is 1,000/2,000 with a 300 ante and play will be underway at 12:30 p.m. local time.

Negreanu Likes Sixty-Nine

Daniel Negreanu, who busted earlier but bought back in, was first to act and made it 2,700 under the gun. Action folded to Ihar Soika, who won the €10,000 High Roller in EPT Barcelona back in 2014, and he tossed in 7,000 while verbalizing the three-bet was to 6,900.

"Sixty nine huh?" said Negreanu with a big smile, "Haha, I get it. That's a sex number!"

"I like Sixty-Nine haha!"

Negreanu eyed Soika's stack and said "You have a lot of money? Ah, you don't have a lot. But I still try to get it!"

Negreanu called and the flop came {5-Spades}{A-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}. Negreanu check called a bet of 6,200 before they both checked the {3-Clubs} on the turn. The {4-Clubs} completed the board and Negreanu's bet of 11,500 forced Soika to fold.

Salter Doubles, Karmazinas Thinks He Looks Old

Level 5 : 250/500, 50 ante
Jack Salter
Jack Salter

Before the break we caught the tail end of a hand between Jack Salter and Kully Sidhu.

On a board of {2-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{A-Diamonds}{K-Clubs} big blind Salter was all in for 32,700. Hijack Kully Sidhu was deep in the tank and said "You have a set?", before thinking about it some more.

Eventually he did call, and he got the bad news right away.

Jack Salter: {10-Clubs}{10-Spades}
Kully Sidhu: {A-Spades}{10-Hearts}

The river {6-Spades} was a blank and Salter doubled.

While the former EPT Grand Final runner up was still stacking his newfound chips, his neighbor Dominykas Karmazinas asked him how old he was.

"29, I'm an old man! What? You see the grey hair?"

To the table's surprise, Karmazinas answered affirmative; "Yeah, it's terrible!"

Salter laughed and said "Well, thanks for being so honest. How old are you?"

"28," Karmazinas anwered, "One more year and I'll look like this? Noooo!"

Farrell Sends Tsoukernik to the Rail

Level 4 : 200/400, 50 ante
Leon Tsoukernik
Leon Tsoukernik

With a board of {K-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{3-Spades}{4-Diamonds} being spread in front of the dealer, Leon Tsoukernik bet 5,000 out of the blinds and then faced the raise to 22,000 by his sole opponent Niall Farrell. The EPT12 Malta champion already had a big stack and it would grow even bigger when Tsoukernik shoved for 31,000 and the Scotsman called.

Tsoukernik: {5-Spades}{3-Diamonds}
Farrell: {9-Spades}{7-Diamonds}

Rest assured that Tsoukernik won't be missing for long, as the single reentry option allows players to buy back in.

Welcome to Day 1 of the EPT12 Grand Final €25,750 High Roller

Another sunny day in Monte-Carlo
Another sunny day in Monte-Carlo

In two hours from now at 12.30 p.m. local time, the final highlight of the 2016 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo® Casino EPT Grand Final gets underway with Day 1 of the three-day €25,750 High Roller.

Many of the usual suspects are expected back at the tables of the Salles des Etoiles at the Monte-Carlo Bay Resort on this sunny day. Defending champion is Charlie Carrel, who defeated a 215-entry strong field one year ago for a payday of €1,114,000.

The eight-handed tournament provides levels of 60 minutes and a starting stack of 50,000 chips with 10 levels scheduled for Day 1, registration and single reentry remain available until 15 minutes prior to the start of Day 2 on Thursday.

A bumper field is expected and yesterday's Satellites have been very promising with 53 entrants (7 tickets) in the morning and more than 90 entries (10 tickets) in the evening. Another €3,200 Turbo Satellite kicked off half an hour ago as well.

As usual, the PokerNews live reporting team will be on hand to provide updates from the action at the tables, so stay tuned and find out who will lift the trophy on Friday by checking back regularly.
