Chris Dowling Leads Last 17 of the €10,300 Pot-Limit Omaha High Roller in Barcelona

Day 1 of the 2018 PokerStars European Poker Tour Barcelona €10,300 Pot-Limit Omaha High Roller is in the books and 17 players remain out of an 80-entry strong field, consisting of 62 unique players and 18 re-entries. The money spots are still six eliminations away, as only the top 11 spots share a portion of the €776,000 prize pool. A min cash is worth €19,400 and the winner takes home the trophy and a payday of €213,400.

Leading the field after Day 1 is Irishman Chris Dowling who bagged up 509,000. Denmark's Alexander Petersen was one of the hopefuls to enter twice and managed to spin his second attempt up to 417,000, good enough for second place. Laszlo Bujtas (393,000), Dan Shak (387,000) and Anson Tsang (349,000) round up the top five after Day 1.

Further notables still in contention include Seamus Cahill (329,000), Yevgeniy Timoshenko (190,000), Martin Kozlov (173,000), Felix Stephensen (172,000), Alex Lindop (142,000) and Cord Garcia (104,000). All remaining 17 players will return to Casino Barcelona on August 30th, 2018, at 12.30 p.m. local time to play down to a champion and the action resumes with blinds of 4,000/8,000.

Among those to bust throughout the day were Sylvain Loosli and Pedro Zagalo, who finished 1st and 2nd respectively in this very event under the umbrella of the PokerStars Championship in 2017. They were joined on the rail by such big names as Jan Suchanek, Niklas "lena90" Astedt, Sam Greenwood, Vladimir Troyanovskiy, Max Silver, Alex Komaromi, Ryan Riess and Cary Katz.

Zagalo was eliminated by Alexander Petersen when he got it in after a jack-high flop with suited queens, Petersen looked him up with kings and queens as well as the spades flush draw and locked up the elimination with another spade on the turn. Cord Garcia scored a rare triple elimination with trips only and among the casualties in that hand were Silver and Jan-Peter Jachtmann.

Dany Chidiac was the first player to bust after only 15 minutes, but his second bullet appeared to be deemed for success after he quickly claimed the top spot. However, things went downhill from there and Chidiac was eliminated by Seamus Cahill. Another Irishman then made headlines in the late stages of the day and Chris Dowling took over the lead after sending €50,000 Single-Day High Roller runner-up Jean-Noel Thorel to the rail. Dowling and Thorel both turned the nut straight and had a flush redraw with clubs and diamonds respectively. A club appeared on the river and Downling jumped into the top spot, which he didn't surrender anymore until bagging and tagging.

Late casualties on Day 1 included Cary Katz and Shyngis Satubayev, while Laszlo Bujtas, Felix Stephensen and Martin Kozlov scored very late double ups.

Petersen Doubles Bujtas; Busts Katz

Level 15 : 3,000/6,000, 0 ante
Cary Katz
Cary Katz

In the last hand of the previous level, Alexander Petersen hit bottom two pair with the {J-Clubs}{7-Spades}{5-Clubs}{X-Spades} on the {K-Spades}{7-Hearts}{5-Diamonds} flop and had Laszlo Bujtas all in and at risk. Bujtas had {Q-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} for middle set and the {9-Hearts} turn and {3-Clubs} river brought no miracle.

As soon as the blinds went up, Petersen min-raised to 12,000 and Katz got his remaining few chips in, Petersen snap-called.

Cary Katz: {K-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}
Alexander Petersen: {K-Hearts}{K-Clubs}{Q-Spades}{3-Spades}

"Oh my god, that's horrible," Katz said as soon as he saw the cards of Petersen. He found no help on a board of {A-Spades}{Q-Clubs}{8-Spades}{2-Spades}{A-Diamonds} and joined the rail in the final level of Day 1.

Jean-Noel Thorel
Jean-Noel Thorel

With the turn showing {Q-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}, Jean-Noel Thorel bet the pot for 44,500 in the big blind and Chris Dowling in the cutoff raised the pot. Thorel moved all in and Dowling snap-called.

"They have the same hand, who has the freeroll?" Cary Katz asked in table chat.

Jean-Noel Thorel: {K-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{J-Spades}{2-Spades}
Chris Dowling: {K-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{3-Clubs}

Both had redraws to a flush and Dowling was the one that got there thanks to the {8-Clubs} on the river, sending Thorel to the rail in cruel fashion.

Bogdan Capitan: {Q-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}{9-Spades}{8-Diamonds}
Jean-Noel Thorel: {K-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}

The board came {5-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{3-Hearts}{A-Spades}{3-Spades} and Capitan was drawing dead on the turn.

Garcia and Satubayev Double

Level 13 : 2,000/4,000, 0 ante
Cord Garcia
Cord Garcia

In a multi-way limped pot the flop showed {Q-Spades}{J-Clubs}{7-Clubs} and action checked to Cord Garcia, who bet 20,000. Seamus Cahill raised it up to 80,000 and that forced out Felix Stephensen. Garcia moved all in for 149,500 and Cahill called.

Cord Garcia: {K-Clubs}{K-Spades}{J-Spades}{J-Diamonds}
Seamus Cahill: {A-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}

The board completed with the {9-Hearts} turn and {5-Diamonds} river, allowing Garcia to double.

Shyngis Satubayev also doubled, for the second time in quick succession. On a flop of {J-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}, Samuli Sipila raised the pot when Satubayev had bet 10,000 and Satubayev called all in for 69,000.

Shyngis Satubaev: {K-Spades}{J-Spades}{9-Hearts}{7-Hearts}
Samuli Sipila: {10-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{5-Spades}{5-Clubs}

The {Q-Hearts} turn and {10-Hearts} river gave Satubayev a runner runner flush and he also doubled.

Keijzer Eliminated by Petersen

Ronald Keijzer
Ronald Keijzer

Alexander Petersen and Ronald Keijzer invested 22,500 each to see a flop of {K-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{3-Clubs} and Petersen checked. Keijzer bet the pot for 49,000 and Petersen gave it some thought, then raised and Keijzer called all in for 72,000.

Ronald Keijzer: {K-Spades}{Q-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{5-Spades}
Alexander Petersen: {A-Spades}{K-Hearts}{J-Spades}{8-Spades}

"Oh, I am in great shape then," Petersen said when he saw the cards of his opponent. The {J-Clubs} turn was bad news for Keijzer, who now needed a queen and a queen only to avoid the elimination. Instead, it was the blank {9-Clubs} on the river that sent Keijzer to the rail.

Dany Chidiac and Seamus Cahill invested 11,000 each to see a flop of {Q-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} and Chidiac moved all in for his last 24,000, Cahill quickly called.

Dany Chidiac: {A-Clubs}{J-Hearts}{10-Spades}{3-Diamonds}
Seamus Cahill: {K-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}

Chidiac had an open-ended straight draw but some of outs were covered by the flush draw of Cahill. The {9-Clubs} turn and {7-Clubs} river failed to improve Chidiac and Cahill won the pot with trips sevens, the Irishman jumped above half a million in chips.

Triple Knockout for Garcia

Level 10 : 1,000/2,000, 0 ante
Jan-Peter Jachtmann
Jan-Peter Jachtmann

On the flop of {J-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} there were already two all in triangles in front of Balint Sebestyen and Jan-Peter Jachtmann, who had moved all in for 12,500. Cord Garcia called and exposed his cards already while Max Silver was still to act with very few chips. The floor was called and Silver nodded "it's okay, I call."

Balint Sebestyen: {A-Spades}{Q-Hearts}{J-Spades}{3-Diamonds}
Jan-Peter Jachtmann: {10-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{9-Spades}{6-Spades}
Max Silver: {K-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{3-Clubs}
Cord Garcia: {9-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{X-}

The {10-Spades} turn and {3-Spades} river failed to improve either of the players at risk and Garcia scored the triple knockout.

Zagalo Eliminated by Petersen

Pedro Zagalo

On a flop of {J-Spades}{7-Spades}{6-Hearts}, Alexander Petersen and Pedro Zagalo clashed and the latter was all in and at risk.

Pedro Zagalo: {A-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}{8-Hearts}
Alexander Petersen: {K-Hearts}{K-Spades}{Q-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}

Petersen expected to see a set or pocket aces as per table chat and was somewhat surprised, he locked up the hand with the {6-Spades} on the turn. The meaningless {2-Hearts} appeared on the river and Petersen dragged in the pot while enjoying a massage.

"I guess he was unhappy with me because I opened to many pots," Petersen added in table chat.
