Marcelo Simoes Mesqueu Wins First EPT Main Event Title for Brazil in Monte Carlo (€939,840)

The 2022 PokerStars European Poker Tour stop presented by Monte-Carlo Casino®️ has come to a thrilling conclusion and it was Brazil's Marcelo Simoes Mesqueu who topped a field of 1,073 entries in the 2022 EPT Monte Carlo €5,300 Main Event. After a short-lived heads-up duel with Morten Hvam, Mesqueu secured the biggest portion of the €5,204,050 prize pool in the second-biggest EPT Main Event in the history of the stop at Le Sporting Monte Carlo.

While players from the South American poker powerhouse nation have made several deep runs in the marquee event of the popular live poker tour and sponsoring site PokerStars features three countrymen on their roster of ambassadors, it was the first EPT Main Event for Brazil. Prior to his victory on the French Riviera, most of his live poker results came from home soil. Mesqueu won the leaderboard of the Brazilian Series of Poker (BSOP) in 2019 and currently sits in second place with a decent shot of a repeat victory.

The top prize of €939,840 represents the far biggest cash of his career and the same also applied for runner-up Hvam. In December 2019, the Dane already came close to glory and finished 13th in the EPT Prague Main Event for €55,690, which he now eclipsed more than ten-fold with a consolation prize of €564,640.

Also featured on the final day were Moldova's Dragos Trofimov, Jaime Cervantes on his first trip to Europe, French bracelet winner Hugo Pingray and German PokerStars qualifier Erkan Soenmez. PokerStars ambassador Ramon Colillas and Yannick Cardot had reached the official eight-handed final table but were eliminated at the end of Day 4 to set the stage for the grand finale.

Marcelo Simoes Mesqueu wins the 2022 PokerStars Monte Carlo €5,300 Main Event

Until the dinner break, there were only two all-in showdowns both of which featured Marcelo Simoes Mesqueu and Jaime Cervantes. The American first doubled and was then denied another double despite turning set with pocket nines versus ace-king. While all middling stacks traded the chips back and forth, Mesqueu sooner than later assumed control and stormed into a commanding lead thanks to using his growing advantage with relentless aggression. The Brazilian could seemingly not put any foot wrong and amassed an enormous lead over the other five contenders.

As the final six returned to a very cagey setup with the shortest stacks below ten blinds, it was Dragos Trofimov who doubled through runaway chip leader Mesqueu. The Brazilian however made up for it by knocking out Erkan Soenmez shortly after with five-trey getting there to beat the ace-deuce of the PokerStars qualifier from Germany in a preflop contest.

It opened the floodgates for a frantic period in which the tournament went from six to two hopefuls in the span of just half an hour.

Mesqueu also came from behind to crack the ace-king of Pingray with king-nine as he spiked a nine on the turn much to the delight of his Brazilian rail, which went nuts once the river bricked off.

Cervantes was flipping for his tournament life against Hvam with ace-jack versus pocket nines but found no help to bow out in fourth place. He was followed to the rail by Trofimov, who laddered up a few spots but missed a maiden EPT Main Event title for his home country of Moldova.

Brief deal discussions came to no conclusion and Mesqueu never lost his commanding lead despite two double-ups for Hvam when the Dane was getting it in with a severe short stack. Ultimately, Hvam risked it all for a third time with a gutshot in a three-bet pot but the pocket kings of Mesqueu prevailed to let his rail from Brazil commence with a boisterous celebration.

Among those to support their countryman en route to victory was also Lucas Scafini, who came out on top of the biggest France Poker Series €1,100 Main Event in Monte Carlo for a payday of €250,000. With two major victories during the series on the French Riviera, Brazil has once more confirmed that is the up and coming poker nation on the live and online poker circuit.

This concludes the PokerNews live coverage of the 2022 PokerStars EPT Monte Carlo €5,300 Main Event and entire series. The next EPT stop has already confirmed, as the live poker tour will return to one of its most popular locations in Barcelona in August 2022.

Morten Hvam raised to 500,000 on the button with the {k-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} and Marcelo Simoes three-bet to 1,300,000 with the {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds} for Hvam to call as he invested more than a quarter of his remaining stack.

The {9-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{6-Spades} flop gave the Dane a gutshot and Simoes bet 1,000,000. Hvam had 3,400,000 behind and he eventually got them in to pick up a call by Simoes.

As both players gathered near their rails, the {5-Spades} gave some outs to a potential split pot. Nothing changed on the {j-Diamonds} river either but there were a few seconds of silence before the Brazilian rail exploded.

After several "vamouuuuu" shouts, Simoes was lifted into the air by the €1,100 FPS Main Event winner Lucas Scafini and the first Brazilian winner of an EPT Main Event was crowned.

Hvam's tournament run ended in second place and he secured a payday of €564,640 but missed out on another victory for Denmark in more than a decade.

A recap of today's action is to follow.

Marcelo Simoes raised to 400,000 on the button with the {j-Diamonds}{8-Spades} and Morten Hvam called with the {j-Clubs}{6-Spades} in the small blind. Dragos Trofimov was then all-in for 700,000 with the {a-Hearts} showing and his two opponents called.

The {j-Spades}{9-Clubs}{6-Hearts} flop brought a check-call by Hvam for 400,000 and he did so again for 500,000 on the {2-Hearts} turn. After the {9-Hearts} river, both then checked it down.

Trofimov's {a-Hearts}{4-Clubs} were revealed as he bowed out in third place for €397,590. Hvam's flopped two pair were counterfeited and Simoes earned the entire pot.

Both remaining players then requested to see ICM deal numbers and a short break is to follow.

Jaime Cervantes raised to 1,000,000 from under the gun with 1,800,000 behind and Morten Hvam then pushed all-in with the superior stack out of the big blind. Within just two seconds, Cervantes called it off to create the following showdown.

Jaime Cervantes: {a-Spades}{j-Diamonds}
Morten Hvam: {9-Spades}{9-Hearts}

The {k-Spades}{8-Hearts}{4-Spades} flop gave some additional back door outs which vanished on the {k-Clubs} turn. Another blank followed with the {5-Clubs} river and Cervantes shook hands with all other remaining finalists before heading to the payout desk.

For the third hand in a row, Marcelo Simoes open-jammed and this time Hugo Pingray in the big blind decided to call it off for the 3,275,000 in the big blind.

Hugo Pingray: {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades}
Marcelo Simoes: {k-Hearts}{9-Spades}

The {k-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{5-Clubs} flop kept Pingray in the lead but the Brazilian rail exploded on the {9-Clubs} turn, then ramped up their celebration on the {5-Hearts} river as Pingray's elimination in 5th place for €228,460 was confirmed.

Marcelo Simoes: {5-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}

The {q-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{3-Spades} flop gave Simoes two pair while Soenmez had a gutshot. There was some sweat on the {a-Hearts} turn but the inconsequential {j-Hearts} river ended the run of Soenmez in 6th place for a payday of €167,050.

Jaime Cervantes raised to 275,000 from an early position and Marcelo Simoes three-bet jammed with the chip leading stack in the big blind. Cervantes called it off for his 3,545,000 after checking his remaining chips and investing three time banks to explore all other stack sizes on the table.

Jaime Cervantes: {9-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}
Marcelo Simoes: {a-Hearts}{k-Clubs}

The {7-Spades}{6-Spades}{5-Diamonds} flop kept Cervantes ahead and the {9-Hearts} turn let Cervantes fist pump briefly. However, the {8-Diamonds} river brought a straight on the board to let the Brazilian rail celebrate a rather unusual split pot.

Hugo Pingray opened to 180,000 with the {9-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} from an early position and Morten Hvam called in the small blind with the {9-Spades}{7-Spades}, Jaime Cervantes called out of the big blind with {a-Clubs}{10-Hearts}.

The {a-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}{6-Hearts} flop was checked to Pingray, who bet 200,000. Hvam folded and Cervantes called as they headed to the {8-Clubs} turn. Cervantes checked once more and Pingray fired a second barrel for 800,000 into a pot of 1,020,000, forcing Cervantes to use a time bank extension before he called.

That led to the {a-Hearts} on the river which improved Cervantes to trips but completed a potential flush. Cervantes checked and Pingray fired the third barrel by jamming for an effective 1,840,000.

The American immediately sighed and invested several of his remaining time banks before he let go. Some other players at the table guessed the cards of Pingray with one of them suspecting it to be ace-six.

A Winner Will be Crowned in the 2022 PokerStars EPT Monte Carlo €5,300 Main Event

Feature Table at the Salle des Etoiles

The final six players out of an 1,073 entry strong field in the 2022 EPT Monte Carlo €5,300 Main Event will return to their seats on the feature stage of the Salle des Etoiles at Le Sporting Monte-Carlo at 12.30 pm local time to determine a champion in the second-biggest PokerStars European Poker Tour stop presented by Monte-Carlo Casino®️.

It is already certain that the popular live poker series will crown a maiden winner and Brazil's Marcelo Simoes as well as Moldova's Dragos Trofimov could not only earn their own but also the first-ever EPT Main Event title for their respective home countries.

Simoes is second on the leaderboard with 6,890,000 in chips and only trails Morten Hvam (7,350,000), while Trofimov is the shortest stack but his 3,085,000 represent a mighty 39 big blinds for the restart.

The trio in the middle of the pack is separated by only ten big blinds. 2014 WSOP bracelet winner Hugo Pingray returns with 5,525,000 followed by PokerStars qualifier Erkan Soenmez (4,850,000) and Jaime Cervantes (4,735,000) on his first trip to Europe rounds up the final table line-up.

The action is scheduled to recommence with 76:13 minutes remaining in level 28 at blinds of 40,000/80,000 and a big blind ante of 80,000. All levels last 90 minutes each and once there are three contenders remaining, the level duration will be cut in half. The same would also apply if a deal is made in which case all those still with chips at their disposal would have to still compete for 10% of the remaining prize pool by then.

The biggest slice of the €5,204,050 prize pool is still up for grabs and the six finalists have locked up a payday of €167,050. However, the prestigious EPT Main Event title and top prize of €939,840 are reserved for the winner.
