The 2023 PokerStars European Poker Tour presented by Monte-Carlo Casino® stop at the beautiful Sporting Monte-Carlo continues to break records, and the latest record broken was when the France Poker Series (FPS) €2,200 High Roller attracted a field of 1,234 players, generating an enormous prize pool of €2,369,280.

326 of those entries happened on the turbo Day 1b, where the top 48 finishers bagged and tagged for Day 2 after bursting the bubble and reaching the money. The field was supposed to play down to 49 people, but Marchetti Luca and Vladislavs Petrovs were both unfortunate enough to bust during hand-for-hand play. Luca’s ace-queen could not win the flip against pocket nines and Petrovs’ pocket queens did not hold against king-jack.

Thus, one extra elimination was had, leaving the size of the field at 48. They were the last players leaving the tournament area while the others rejoiced and hurried off to get some much-needed rest, as Day 2 was set to start 11 hours from the end of play.

Bagging the chip lead was Japan’s Shiina Okamoto. She crushed the opposition all night and was the only one that bagged over one million chips. She eliminated Will Kassouf in a big pot to seize the chip lead and she never let go since then. The only other two players to take more than 500,000 to Day 2 are Samiyel Duzgun and Dinesh Alt, while the rest of the field had to settle for more moderate stacks.

The most notable name in the top ten is that of Maria Konnikova, who will start Day 2 with a respectable 264,000, which will be just a bit above average.

A lot of poker’s regular faces showed up during this turbo flight, but almost all had to take their leave throughout the day. Among them were Mike Watson, Nacho Barbero, Felipe Ketzer, Dimitar Danchev, Sylvain Loosli, and Conor Bergin.

Parker Talbot was the only PokerStars Ambassador to show up, but he unfortunately exited the High Roller just outside of the top 100.

As the field drew closer to the bubble, the likes of Julien Sitbon, Marc MacDonnell, and Antoine Labat lost all of their chips in some way or another, and they will not be seen at the start of Day 2.

Combined with Day 1a, there were 182 remaining survivors and they will all return at 1 p.m. local time with an as of yet unknown mincash added to their bankroll. The exact payout structure will be announced before the start of Day 2.

Play will resume in Level 18, with 34 minutes remaining on the clock, and the blinds will be at 4,000/8,000 for that duration before they increase. The tournament is scheduled to play down to the eventual champion, so players will need to brace themselves for a long day ahead.

The PokerNews live reporting team will of course be back on the floor from start to finish to provide key hands and chip counts on the way to crowning a winner.

Double Trouble as Bubble Bursts and Day 1b Finishes

Level 19 : Blinds 5,000/10,000, 10,000 ante
Valon Olluri
Valon Olluri

Two all-in and calls were announced with 50 players left and thus on the stone bubble.

On the first table, it was Marchetti Luca who had pushed all in from early position for 85,000 and was called by Sim Kok Wai in middle position.

Marchetti Luca: AQ
Sim Kok Wai: 99

A flip on the bubble and Wai came out the victor when the board ran out 8K32J, officially bursting the bubble.

However, there was another hand yet to be played out, as on another table Vladislavs Petrovs had three-bet all in for 76,000 from middle position over an under the gun open to 25,000 from Valon Olluri. Olluri had made the call and a showdown was ordered.

Vladislavs Petrovs: QQ
Valon Olluri: KJ

Olluri outflopped Petrovs on K59. Petrovs requested a heart from the dealer, but none came on the black runout of 67.

Two players were thus eliminated on the bubble of Day 1b and 48 players have made it to Day 2 and secured a mincash.

Stay tuned for the full chip counts as well as a recap of the entire day.

Duzgun Downs Two

Level 19 : Blinds 5,000/10,000, 10,000 ante
Samiyel Duzgun
Samiyel Duzgun

Seyed Saeed Sajadian had open-shoved his last 43,000 from early position and Terence Etim pushed his own 80,000 stack in the middle as well. It folded to Samiyel Duzgun in the big blind who made the call to put both players at risk.

Seyed Saeed Sajadian: 33
Terence Etim: A10
Samiyel Duzgun: AJ

Duzgun and Sajadian were both in decent shape, while Etim needed a lot of help to stay alive.

The board ran out 4479J and Duzgun rivered the winning hand to score a double knock-out.

Thirty Is the Magic Number

Level 17 : Blinds 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Marius Kudzmanas
Marius Kudzmanas

Marius Kudzmanas open-raised to 12,000 from early position and got three-bet by Jimmy Andres Torres Velasquez in middle position. 30,000 was the amount to call, and Kudzmanas put in the necessary chips to do so.

The flop fell AAJ and both players checked. On the 3 turn Velasquez bet another 30,000 after a check from Kudzmanas. The 6 river was dealt and now Kudzmanas took the betting lead by adding another 30,000 to the pot.

This sent Velasquez into a tank of several minutes, but eventually he came up with a call. He got shown AQ and mucked his cards, surrendering the pot to Kudzmanas who's stack got elevated to over ten times starting.

Okamoto Busts Kassouf in Huge Clash

Level 16 : Blinds 2,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Shiina Okamoto
Shiina Okamoto

The action was caught on the river on a completed board of 8J65Q. The pot had already grown to a huge size before Will Kassouf put in his final 75,000 from the small blind. Shiina Okamoto was in the big blind and verbally committed to a call.

Kassouf said ''You're good'', as he tabled his 108 for a pair turned into a bluff. Okamoto showed QJ for the rivered two pair and scooped the gargantuan pot to add to her already impressive stack. ''I shouldn't play with good players'', Kassouf stated while he left the tables in good spirits.

Some 30 minutes after claiming the chip lead himself, Kassouf passed it over to Okamoto. Playing six times the average, she has made great strides so far on Day 1b of the €2,200 FPS High Roller.

Kassouf Scoops Four-Bet Pot for Chip Lead

Level 14 : Blinds 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
William Kassouf
William Kassouf

The action was caught on the flop, but Will Kassouf was kind enough to tell PokerNews how the preflop action went down.

Apparently, Marco Leonzio raised to 6,000 without looking at his cards, as he had been doing, and Kassouf made it 21,000 to go. Leonzio responded with a four-bet to 42,000 and Kassouf made the call.

The flop was spread as 5AK and Leonzio shipped in his above-average 120,000 stack in the middle. Kassouf commentated on the alcohol consumption of his opponent before ''giving him a spin'' and making the call with the covering stack.

Marco Leonzio: 84
Will Kassouf: A5

Kassouf needed to fade hearts to scoop the huge pot. He begged the dealer for black cards and the universe must have been listening as the 7 and 4 completed the board.

Leonzio left the tournament area while Kassouf stacked all of his newly acquired chips. He is now playing near ten starting stacks and is far and above the rest of the field.

Leonzio Plays Blind, Busts Hallay in his First Hand

Level 11 : Blinds 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante

Axel Hallay just sat down at the end of late registration with a fresh stack of 30,000. He made the raise to 3,000 from under the gun before Marco Leonzio made it 6,000 to go, claiming to not have seen his cards yet. The action folded to Will Kassouf in the small blind, who smooth-called.

''If you've got it, you got it,'' exclaimed Hallay before he put the rest of his chips in. ''He's using my line!'' Kassouf responded. While the two were bantering away, Leonzio made the call. Meanwhile, Kassouf had lost interest in the pot and mucked his hand.

Axel Hallay: AQ
Marco Leonzio: K6

Leonzio had not lied, he was indeed playing blind and put 30,000 chips at risk without looking at his cards. While the flop of 797 was dealt Hallay stated, ''A king will come on the river.'' The 5 was a safe turn and the river also made Hallay's prediction fail to come true. However, the 6 still gave Leonzio the best hand as he was the only one to make a pair.

Leonzio stood up and celebrated while the whole table had a good laugh about the situation. Leonzio added another starting stack to his already towering stack and is now playing triple the average.

Okada Wins Huge Without Showdown

Level 10 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Ken Okada
Ken Okada

A gigantic 35,000 had gathered in the middle preflop, courtesy of three players. The flop J106 was dealt and big blind blind Luca Guglielmoni checked, as did Ken Okada in early and Seyed Saeed Sajadian in middle position.

The turn fell a fourth club in the form of the 7 and Guglielmoni checked again. Okada put out a bet of 15,000 and this was enough to let the other two players pass their hands to the dealer.

Okada is sitting on an impressive stack of just over four starting stacks in the final minutes of the reentry period.

Bleck Is Building a Stack

Level 8 : Blinds 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Peter Bleck
Peter Bleck

Igor Kotyk raised to 2,000 from under the gun and got called by Peter Bleck in the cutoff and Alexis Nicolai in the big blind. The flop fanned out 635 and all players opted to check.

The turn was the 10 and Nicolai led out for 3,200. Kotyk got out of the way, but Bleck quickly threw in some calling chips. On the 7 river, Nicolai increased his bet to 7,800 and Bleck looked agonized as he was thinking about his decision.

Almost putting in the chips several times, he eventually asked for an exact count of the bet. When he received it, he paid the amount due, seemingly expecting to lose. However, Nicolai instantly mucked his cards and Bleck got a surprising, but welcome, win.

Bleck is now among the chip leaders in the room, playing over three times starting stack.

Ju Bluffs his Button

Level 8 : Blinds 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Samuel Ju
Samuel Ju

With 13,500 in the middle and a flop of 657 on the table, Samuel Ju was on the button and bet 3,000 after a check from Benoit Albiges in the small blind. Albiges obliged with a call and the pair saw a turn of 2.

Albiges checked once more and Ju now fired for 5,500. Again, Albiges put in the same amount for a call. On the 2 river Ju completed his triple barrel by betting 7,500 chips. For the third time, Albiges check-called.

Ju immediately mucked his cards as he did not want to show his bluff. Meanwhile, Albiges has more than doubled the starting stack of 30,000.
