Josip Simunic - EPT Deauville High Roller Winner 2015

Josip Simunic is the winner of the PokerStars.fr European Poker Tour Deauville €10,300 High Roller beating Jean-Noel Thorel heads up to top a record-breaking field in this event.

Simunic began the day with just over three big blinds, but 10 hours later he found himself atop the final day's 12 remaining players to be crowned 2015 champion and walk away with the trophy, €309,170, and a luxury SLYDE watch.

There was high drama right from the start of the day, as several players were short stacked out of the 12 returning , not least of which was Tobias Peters who returned with just 5,000. The first order of business was the draw for the button, which Peters took great interest in, but he was out of luck as he was in the small blind for the first hand, while Garret Gruener would be under the gun and could wait to see what transpired on the other table.

As it happened, it would be Davidi Kitai who would crash out on the first hand of the day, which took over eight minutes to play out. Robin Ylitalo opened and Kitai moved all in with his short stack. Eric Sfez made the call in the big blind and Ylitalo put in the required extra chips to call as well. A bet from Sfez on the river got Ylitalo to fold, and on a final board of {5-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{2-Spades}{2-Clubs}{6-Diamonds} the cards were turned over. Sfez had the {a-Diamonds}{q-Hearts} to beat the {q-Spades}{8-Spades} of Kitai to bust him, and Peters asked incredulously, "I just have to hit to win?" Peters finally looked at his cards and {6-Spades}{3-Diamonds} was indeed the winner.

With Kitai out, Peters and Gruener made the pay jump. Gruener would also survive when he was dealt the {8-Hearts}{8-Spades} when he was all in on his second hand in the big blind. Peters was out in 11th for €25,190 soon after. He shoved the {9-Clubs}{7-Clubs} and was called by Fady Kamar holding the {a-Hearts}{7-Hearts}, who went on to make the nut flush. Gruener couldn’t hold on much longer and got the same €25,190 payday for his 10th place finish.

Nikolay Komcharokov entered the day as chip leader having won a live satellite to get his ticket, but he was to fall in ninth for €30,720, which represents his biggest payday ever. Thomas Butzhammer had doubled through Komcharokov a few hands earlier and he then four-bet shoved the {8-Clubs}{8-Diamonds} into the {q-Hearts}{q-Diamonds} of Butzhammer to exit short of the official final table of eight.

Butzhammer fell victim to the {k-Spades}{k-Clubs} of Simunic in the next level when he shoved with the {a-Hearts}{10-Clubs}. His eighth-place finish was good for €41,160.

There were similar stack sizes at this stage and a fair bit of three-bet shoving before Ylitalo scored a double knock out holding the {j-Hearts}{j-Clubs}. He called the all-in shoves of Joao Ribeiro, who had the {k-Clubs}{q-Spades}, and Eric Sfez, who had the {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}. The cards ran out {7-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} to reduce the field to five.

The chip lead swapped several times over the next few levels with Thorel holding it for some time, but no one was able to draw clear of the pack and it was anyone's tournament to win. Something had to give, though, and it was Argentinian sensation Ivan Luca who was next out when he shoved with the {7-Clubs}{7-Spades} and Simunic called with the {a-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}. The cards ran out {6-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{a-Hearts}{4-Clubs} to send Luca out in fifth for €90,690.

Four-handed play went on for a bit as the stacks evened out to around 20 big blinds, and it became a technical game of stack sizes and shoving ranges, with flops few and far between. That was how the action went as Ylitalo moved all in with the {k-Spades}{q-Spades} and Simunic called with the {6-Clubs}{6-Spades}. It was a board of changing fortunes as the cards ran out {k-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}. Ylitao was eliminated in fourth for €112,440, and three-handed play commenced.

Simunic was then chip leader and began to steadily apply the pressure on his shorter-stacked opponents, with Thorel and Kamar unable to fight back to his series of shoves. He would not be involved in the next elimination, though, as a rare flop broke out between Kamar and Thorel.

Thorel opened and Kamar called from the big blind. Kamar then check-raised all in on a flop of {2-Hearts}{8-Spades}{6-Hearts}. Thorel called with the {6-Clubs}{3-Clubs}, and it was looking good for the {8-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} of Kamar. But after the {a-Clubs} hit the turn, the river {3-Spades} gave Thorel two pair. Kamar was the third-place finisher, taking home €135,780.

Thorel would attempt to apply maximum pressure to Simunic in the heads-up battle, but in the end that was his undoing. He called a shove on the turn holding bottom pair against the pocket aces of Simunic, and it was all over soon after.

Simiunic called a bet from Thorel on the flop of {6-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{10-Spades}, and then all the chips went in the middle when the {4-Diamonds} hit the turn. Simunic had made two pair with the {6-Clubs}{4-Clubs}, and Thorel had the {10-Clubs}{9-Spades}. The {5-Clubs} completed the board, and Simunic was the new EPT Deauville High Roller champion. Thorel had to console himself with €208,900 for second place.

Jean-Noel Thorel Eliminated in 2nd Place (€208,900)

Level 28 : 50,000/100,000, 10,000 ante
Jean-Noel Thorel
Jean-Noel Thorel

It was a very short and incredibly intense heads-up match.

Jean-Noel Thorel had just doubled up and Josip Simunic limped from the small blind. Thorel raised to 300,000 out of the big blind and was called. After a flop of {6-Hearts} {2-Clubs} {10-Spades}, Thorel fired 300,000 and was called by the Austrian before the {4-Diamonds} fell on the turn.

Thorel bet 450,000 and Simunic moved all in with the superior stack. The call of the Frenchman wouldn't take long and they tabled their cards.

Simunic: {6-Clubs} {4-Clubs}
Thorel: {10-Clubs} {9-Spades}

"Come on, face card one time please," Simunic begged towards the dealer. It was not exactly what he wanted, but the {5-Clubs} river was what he needed to let all the emotions flow. Thorel is eliminated in second place and receives €208,900 whereas Simunic even had tears in his eyes shortly after the victory.

Now, we should also stress out that Simunic had started the day with less than four big blinds!!!

Thorel Shoves First Hand of Heads-Up

Level 28 : 50,000/100,000, 10,000 ante
Jean-Noel Thorel
Jean-Noel Thorel

In the very first hand of heads-up play, Jean-Noel Thorel faced a raise of Josip Simunic for 225,000 and moved all in. The Austrian was totally surprised by this: "I thought we were going to play a bit." Thorel only had a "Call if you want to play" and huge grin on the face.

Some time passed by then Simunic asked for a count, it would be 3,080,000 to call.

"Show if I fold?" the Austrian inquired. He then counted his own stack and sighed.

"I really don't know what to do to be honest," Simunic continued. He even considered flipping a coin and took a chip, but then realized that both sides of the chip would show the exact same.

"You don't want to see an ace?" Simunic asked, referring to an earlier hand where Thorel had also just moved all in and said exactly that.

After about nine minutes, the clock was called on the Austrian and he had one more minute to think about his decision. Thorel pulled his smart phone out and asked if he could take a picture of his opponent. Tournament director Thomas Lamatsch denied that, so the Frenchman handed over the phone to friends on the rail, who then took a picture.

"Show if I fold this time?" Simunic asked once again and then mucked his cards with three seconds to spare. Thorel grinned and his rail said "ne montre pas", so the Frenchman giggled and replied "my coach says no" before releasing the cards to the dealer.

Fady Kamar - 3rd Place
Fady Kamar - 3rd Place

Jean-Noel Thorel opened the button for 250,000 and Josip Simunic folded the small blind. Fady Kamar called in the big blind.

The flop was {2-Hearts}{8-Spades}{6-Hearts} and Kamar check-raised all in. Thorel quickly made the call.

Kamar was ahead with top pair {8-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} and Thorel had middle pair with {6-Clubs}{3-Clubs}.

The turn was the {a-Clubs} and the river delivered the {3-Spades} that Thorel needed to give him two pair and bust Kamar.

Thorel celebrated and Kamar quickly offered his congratulations as they shook hands.

Robin Ylitalo Eliminated in 4th Place (€112,440)

Level 27 : 40,000/80,000, 10,000 ante
Robin Ylitalo
Robin Ylitalo

Josip Simunic raised to 170,000 as first to act and Jean-Noel Thorel had already folded out of turn from the big blind while short stack Robin Ylitalo was still to make his decision from the small blind. Simunic grabbed a stack of T-25,000 chips to snap-call an all in and that's exactly what happened.

Simunic: {K-Hearts} {J-Hearts}
Ylitalo: {J-Clubs} {9-Diamonds}

The {7-Spades} {5-Diamonds} {Q-Clubs} {9-Hearts} {7-Clubs} board provided help for the Swede on the turn and he doubled up for 360,000. One hand later, Ylitalo was all in again for 820,000 in total and Simunic asked for a count. The Austrian then moved all in himself from the small blind and Fady Kamar folded from the big blind.

Simunic: {6-Clubs} {6-Spades}
Ylitalo: {K-Spades} {Q-Spades}

"Small cards please," Simunic requested from the dealer but the {K-Clubs} {10-Diamonds} {3-Spades} flop once again gave Ylitalo the better hand. However, the Swede would be drawing dead after the {6-Diamonds} turn. A meaningless {8-Diamonds} river was just a formality and Simunic holds half of the chips with three players left. EPT 10 London champion Ylitalo receives €112,440 for his efforts.

Ivan Luca Eliminated in 5th Place (€90,690)

Level 25 : 25,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Ivan Luca - 5th place
Ivan Luca - 5th place

The action folded to Ivan Luca and he moved all in. Just prior to the hand, Robin Ylitalo had already inquired about his stack size as he was in the big blind next. Josip Simunic glanced over to the dealer and asked "can I have a count please?" It was 1,040,000 to call and the Austrian also inquired about the stack of his neighbor, Fady Kamar, who held the shortest stack around 850,000.

Another half a minute passed by and Simunic then announced "I am all in." Kamar quickly folded and Ylitalo also gave up his big blind. "Please tell me you have ace-jack," Luca said to his opponent and turned over the {7-Clubs} {7-Spades}. Simunic flipped over {A-Diamonds} {Q-Hearts} and then went over to the rail, telling his buddies "we are flipping guys."

The {6-Clubs} {9-Clubs} {8-Hearts} flop was great for the Argentinian as he now also had an open ended straight draw. However, the {A-Hearts} turn improved the hand of the Austrian and he held up with the {4-Clubs} as final community card. Luca recorded yet another final table cash here in Deauville and walks away with €90,690 for his efforts, Simunic is the new chip leader.

Joao Ribeiro moved all in for 357,000 and Eric Sfez, sat to his immediate left, moved in over the top for 650,000. Robin Ylitalo wanted a count of both their stacks before he too announced he was all in.

Josip Simunic in the big blind said he didn’t want to look at his cards but did and folded so it was a three-way all in.

Ribeiro: {k-Clubs}{q-Spades}

Sfez: {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}

Ylitalo: {j-Hearts}{j-Clubs}

The players were on their feet to watch as the cards came out {7-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} and the jacks held to see Ylitalo knock two players out in one fell swoop.

On the first hand after the break Jean-Noel Thorel opened for 60,000 and Thomas Butzhammer moved all in. Josip Simunic sat to his immediate left re-shoved and the blinds and Thorel folded.

Thomas Butzhammer: {a-Hearts}{10-Clubs}

Josip Simunic: {k-Spades}{k-Clubs}

It was Butzhammer who was at risk and the cards ran out {5-Spades}{3-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}. The second time, Simunic had kings in the big blind against Butzhammer and sent the German out in eighth.

Only two hands after doubling up Thomas Butzhammer, Nikolay Komcharokov battled against the German once again and opened the action with a raise to 50,000. Butzhammer made it 126,000 to go in the cutoff and the action went back to Komcharokov, who moved all in after some consideration. Butzhammer snap-called and once again had the better hand.

Butzhammer: {Q-Hearts} {Q-Diamonds}
Komcharokov: {8-Clubs} {8-Diamonds}

The board ran out safely for the Austrian reading {3-Clubs} {7-Diamonds} {7-Spades} {5-Clubs} {4-Clubs} and Komcharokov was covered, heading to the payout desk in order to collect €30,720 for his efforts.

Garret Gruener Eliminated in 10th Place (€25,190)

Level 21 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Garret Gruener
Garret Gruener

Josip Simunic had been stealing the blinds and antes once more and then shoved out of the big blind when Joao Ribeiro min-raised to enforce a fold. Two hands later he limped from the button and Jean-Noel Thorel called to see the flop of {3-Diamonds} {8-Hearts} {A-Diamonds}. Garret Gruener in the big blind checked through as well and the three of them headed to the {2-Clubs} turn.

Gruener check-folded to a bet of 50,000 by Simunic and Thorel called. The {K-Diamonds} river saw another check by Thorel and he called the 116,000-bet of the Austrian with {8-Spades} {2-Hearts} for two pair, Simunic was caught bluffing with queen-high.

Gruener was forced all in the next hand for 10,000 chips after having forfeited his other 3,000 chips as ante. Ribeiro in the big blind turned over {Q-Hearts} {4-Spades} and the American at risk held {J-Spades} {9-Hearts}. The {Q-Spades} {7-Clubs} {4-Clubs} flop gave the Portuguese two pair and it was all over after the {A-Hearts} turn. A meaningless {10-Clubs} river completed the board and Gruener receives €25,190 for his 10th-place finish.

A redraw to the unofficial final table now takes place and new chip counts will be available shortly.
