Georgios Kapalas Leads Final 36, Kevin MacPhee Right on his Heels

Level 19 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante

The third day of a PokerStars EPT Main Event is traditionally the day the money is reached. Day 3 Deauville 2015 was no exception, within a couple of hours of play some left with a sad face while others celebrated. The day started with 138 players hopeful of making the money. In the end, only 87 would succeed in that endeavor.

Benjamin Pollak arrived at the table to find his bag of chips wrapped in another bag. When he opened them he discovered that he didn't have as much as he had written on the bag the night before. He thought he had 275,400, but at the start of the day he counted 267,000, a shortfall of just under three big blinds. The floor was called over and it was explained that an extra bag was sometimes used when it was felt the first one wasn't secure enough for some reason. The floor went off to investigate and came back shortly after to say there were no unaccounted for chips, and therefore nothing could be done.

That got the first bit of "excitement" out of the way. All other commotion today would come from play at the tables.

PokerStars sponsored player Dominik Panka was the first of many notables to get eliminated. His ace-king couldn't win against Pierre Peretti's queens. Team PokerStars Pro Jan Heitmann wouldn't reach the money either. He first lost a big pot to a flopped straight, and eventually lost the rest of his chips limp reraising ace-king into jacks.

EPT Berlin winner and EPT London runner up Kevin MacPhee lost some chips early on, only to bust Bernd Vogelhuber an hour later and pocket 160,000 doing so. That wasn't even the biggest pot MacPhee would win today. He made a straight flush holding eight-seven suited and got paid off by Robert Schulz to get close to 600,000 in chips. He just about doubled that in the levels that followed.

After PCA champion Dimitar Danchev busted (tens to queens), the bubble was in sight. This reduced the speed of play as people were eager to take their time and attempt to sneak into the money. At one point hands were taking so long that the tournament director decided to start hand-for-hand a bit earlier than normal.

Luciano Santos De Hollanda would bust in 89th place, not being able to outrun aces with his ace-queen suited. EPT Campione winner Jannick Wrang became the unluckiest player in the room some time later. With the cameras of the feature table buzzing around him, he made his move with ace-nine and ran his short stack into David Jaoui's pocket tens. The ten-high flop hurt Wrang and he wouldn't recover, despite picking up a gutshot on the turn. Wrang became Deauville's bubble and the 87 others celebrated.

As per usual, right after the bubble short stacks bust left and right. Some got eliminated in dramatic fashion, others quietly committed the last big blinds they saved to get into the money.

Eugene Katchalov, runner up in this event here last year, was one leaving in silent fashion. He was one of the first to go after the bubble, ending his run in 86th place (€8,810). Simon Ravnsbæk was next on the list. The Dane spend the least time in the Main Event to earn that €8,810 as he was the last player registering for the tournament at the start of Day 2.

Katchalov's good friend Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier would do much better, keeping his stack up to par for most of the day. Just the last two levels saw Grospellier slipping, losing coin flips and hands that he was originally dominating. Grospellier seemed frustrated as he ended the day with 120,000 (12 big blinds).

Romanian player Dany Parlafes catapulted into the chip lead early on when he won a huge three-way all in with aces to the fours of shorty Jerome Zerbib and the queens of fellow big stack Vadim Shlez. He busted Tobias Peters with an over pair to the Dutchman's open-ended not much later to get to 1.4 million. He ended the day with 1,220,000, just not enough for the chip lead.

Parlafes wasn't the first to get to the million mark and wasn't the one with his name on top if the final list. That honor went to Georgios Kapalas from, you guessed it, Greece. The biggest pot Kapalas won was a hand where he flopped a pair and flush draw and got it in against pocket aces. Kapalas rivered trips to bust Boutros Naim, and boost his stack considerably. Kapalas ended the day with 1,398,000, just ahead of MacPhee who collected 1,313,000.

"ElkY" Shaking His Head

Level 19 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier
Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier

Bertrand Grospellier opened for 17,000 under the gun and found one player behind him shoving for 110,000 total. Action folded back to Grospellier who instantly called.

Grospellier: {A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds}
Opponent: {A-Spades}{J-Clubs}

Grospellier would flop top pair and top kicker, but the other two community cards made that Grospellier was behind pretty far: {K-Clubs}{10-Spades}{Q-Hearts}.

After the {2-Clubs} on the turn Grospellier had just a chop to hope for, but wouldn't even get that: {5-Diamonds} on the river.

The French Team Pro somewhat angrily handed over the tower of 5,000's, and slammed his hand down on his remaining stack, which resulted in a bit of a messy pile of chips in front of him. Grospellier heavily shook his head, clearly not happy with how things were going lately.

Monfort Runs out of Chips

Level 19 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Ronan Monfort
Ronan Monfort

PokerStars Team Pro Online Ronan Monfort had been short-stacked for almost the entire day and never got anything going, grinding and laddering up as much as he possibly could. He then moved all in for only 17,000 from the small blind with {J-} {4-} and Daniel Carlsson had an easy call in the big blind with {9-Clubs} {9-Spades}.

The board ran out {3-Spades} {2-Diamonds} {8-Hearts} {10-Diamonds} {Q-Clubs} and the Frenchman headed to the payout desk.

Marcin Horecki Eliminated

Level 18 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Marcin Horecki
Marcin Horecki

Sebastien Lebaron opened to 15,000 with just 62,000 behind from early position. Team PokerStars Pro Marcin Horecki shoved all in two positions down for 98,000 total. Action folded to David van den Berg in the big blind. The Dutchman hadn't seen that Horecki had pushed, and wanted to raise Lebaron all in. The floor got involved but there wasn't really an issue as Van den Berg made clear he was fine with raising anyway.

Lebaron folded and Horecki and Van den Berg showed their hands. Van den Berg was the proud owner of {Q-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}, claiming he had them many times before already today. Horecki had {A-Hearts}{K-Clubs} so it was a race going in.

The {7-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{9-Spades} favored the man from Holland, and his Polish foe hit the exit.

Parlafes Plays the Terminator

Level 18 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Dany Parlafes
Dany Parlafes

Dany Parlafes and Vadim Shlez had already tangled prior to the last break and it would take a massive pot to boost the Romanian into the chip lead. Caught in the crossfire was Jerome Zerbib who got it in with pocket fours. The raising action continued between Parlafes and Shlez with the American beeing at risk for more than 500,000 with pocket queens. Parlafes had pocket aces and scooped the humongous pot.

Shortly after, Parlafes raised from the small blind and Tobias Peters defended his big blind. On the {7-Spades} {8-Hearts} {2-Spades} flop, Peters got his remaining stack in with {9-Hearts} {10-Spades} for the open-ended straight draw and Parlafes called with {9-Diamonds} {9-Spades}. Neither the {7-Diamonds} turn nor the {2-Clubs} river were what the Dutchman was looking for and Parlafes scored yet another knockout.

Visser Busts Troyanovskiy

Level 18 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Vladimir Troyanovskiy
Vladimir Troyanovskiy

In the last hand before the break right after the bubble had burst, Ruben Visser shoved from the small blind holding ace-queen. Big blind Vladimir Troyanovskiy made the call all in for his remaining 35,000 in the big blind with pocket tens and flopped a full house to double.

The first hand after the break Visser doubled Troyanovskiy again. Visser open shoved the button for effectively ten big blinds holding pocket deuces. Troyanovskiy woke up with pocket aces in the small blind and of course called. Troyanovskiy won the hand and doubled.

Just now Visser won all those chips back though. After a raise to 13,000 and a call, Visser squeezed to 38,000. Behind him Troyanovskiy shoved for about 60,000. Action folded back to Visser who called with {A-Spades}{J-Hearts}. Troyanovskiy had {A-Clubs}{10-Hearts} and failed to improve enough on {J-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{K-Spades}.

Three-Way All In Eliminates Villa-Lobos and Ravnsbaek

Level 18 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Simon Ravnsbaek
Simon Ravnsbaek

Simon Ravnsbaek moved all in and Nicolau Villa-Lobos put his remaining stack at risk from one seat over as well. Yet another shorter stack did so too from the small blind and Aliaksei Boika had the opponents covered, flipping over {A-Spades} {J-Diamonds}. Ravnsbaek had the weakest hand in {K-Clubs} {Q-Spades} and Villa-Lobos needed his {7-Spades} {7-Diamonds} to hold up.

With the board running out {A-Clubs} {10-Spades} {3-Diamonds} {9-Hearts} {3-Hearts}, two seat open on table 11 occurred and both the Dane and the Brazilian headed to the payout desk to collect their min cash worth €8,810.

Katchalov Busts to Kapalas

Level 18 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Eugene Katchalov
Eugene Katchalov

Filippo Lazzaretto was the first player to join the rail shortly after the restart of the new level and then Eugene Katchalov faced a raise of Georgios Kapalas to 12,000 and a call. The Team PokerStars Pro moved all in for what looked like 85,000 and Kapalas announced that he was all in as well. The third player in the hand folded and the following showdown took place:

Katchalov: {9-Spades} {9-Diamonds}
Kapalas: {10-Diamonds} {10-Hearts}

There would be no help for Katchalov on a {J-Hearts} {7-Spades} {K-Diamonds} {6-Diamonds} {3-Hearts} board and Kapalas extended his lead.

Jannick Wrang Bubbles EPT11 Deauville Main Event

Level 17 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Jannick Wrang
Jannick Wrang

Jannick Wrang moved all in from the button, or at least that was his intention as he had left a few chips behind as he moved his stack in.

David Jaoui was in the small blind and made the call. The big blind folded.

There was a pause of some minutes before the tournament director could arrive at the feature table and instruct that the hands be turned over. During that time they agreed to go all in in in the dark before the flop so Wrang was finally all in.

Wrang was the player at risk and he showed {a-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}.

Jaoui had the pair {10-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}.

The board ran out {5-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{4-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{a-Spades}.

A set right on the flop for Jaoui meant the river ace was irrelevant for Wrang. The 2012 EPT Campione, Campione d'Italia Main Event winner was to be the unfortunate bubble of the tournament.

The remaining players are all now guaranteed at least €8,810.
