Chris Chapman Turns $125 into $34,720 and Wins HPO Charles Town Regional Main Event

Level 23 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Chris Chapman wins!
Chris Chapman wins!

Chris Chapman ran his $125 satellite entry into a Hollywood Poker Open title and $34,720. He bested a field of 112 entries, including two big names in Chris Moneymaker and Lee Childs to take it all down. Now we'll see if Chapman can parlay his winnings into even more, as he earned a $2,500 seat into the HPO Championship Event at the M Resort in Las Vegas June 23-26.

For Chapman, diamond flushes might be listed in the keys to victory. He made two of them at the final table, both for huge pots at critical times.

The first flush was a flopped one against David Lackey during three-handed play. The two players saw a heads-up flop after a preflop raise. The flop came {8-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}, and both players checked. The turn was the {10-Clubs}, and Chapman checked. Lackey bet 45,000, and Chapman raised to 145,000. Lackey shoved all in, and Chapman called with the {q-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}. Lackey had turned a straight, but was drawing dead with the {q-Spades}{8-Clubs}.

The second flush was against Mike Sites at the start of the heads-up portion of the tournament. The board read {8-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{a-Diamonds}, and Sites bet 60,000. After that, a raising war went down quickly between the two and they got all in.

Sites was ahead with the {j-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} for middle pair and a diamond draw, but Chapman could outdraw him with the {k-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}. The board ran out {9-Clubs}, then {10-Diamonds} and Chapman earned his draw to double up.

Chapman said he was a little nervous at the start of Day 2, but felt great as the day continued. He played with a cool demeanor and took his time for many of the decisions he made.

As the day wore on, Chapman managed to tiptoe along, never getting too involved until he was winning a huge pot. For the most part, he played it safe, but he was almost eliminated by Sites earlier at the final table.

The two players were heads up and on the turn, when Sites check-raised Chapman on a board that read {j-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}. Sites had checked to Chapman, who bet 30,000. Sites then slid out a stack of 5,000 chips totaling 100,000. Chapman called. On the river, when the {7-Diamonds} hit, Sites shoved all in, putting the rest of Chapman's 185,000 at risk should he call. Chapman did call and showed a straight with {10-}{8-}. Sites mucked {9-}{8-} face up and lost the huge pot.

This became a thing throughout the day — if Chapman was all in, he was ahead and about to win a huge pot.

Chapman's rise to the top also benefitted from wo players at the final table who experienced big downswings, going from chip lead to bust.

Moneymaker was one of those, as the chip leader coming back from dinner break had turbulent level that put him into the danger zone. He was eventually busted in fourth place by Sites.

After action folded to him in the small blind, Moneymaker looked down at the {a-Spades}{10-Clubs} and paused for a second before he moved all in for 145,000. Sites snap-called with the {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts} and had Moneymaker dominated. No help came for the 2003 WSOP Main Event champion, and he had to settled for $10,080 and no second HPO title.

The second surprise loss was David Lackey, who finished third. He also went from chip leader to busted within a level. He doubled up Chapman in the hand discussed earlier where Chapman flopped a flush and Lackey turned a straight. He also doubled up Sites when both flopped top pair, but Lackey's kicker played.

Lackey was eventually eliminated by Chapman after both players got all in preflop. The two turned over their hands and Chapman was ahead with the {a-Spades}{6-Clubs} against the {q-Spades}{7-Spades} of Lackey. The board ran out {a-Clubs}{k-Spades}{a-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{a-Diamonds} and that spelled the end of the road for Lackey.

That concludes the final regional main event of Season 4 of the Hollywood Poker Open. Each regional main event and leaderboard winner will have a seat reserved in the HPO's $2,500 Championship Event at the M Resort in Las Vegas. That event will be June 23-26, and it should be another great one. The previous three HPO Championship Events in Las Vegas attracted average field sizes of nearly 700 entries with an average first-place prize of $340,000. Don't miss out!

Mike Sites - 2nd Place
Mike Sites - 2nd Place

After losing a massive all in shortly after heads up play began, Mike Sites was all in against Chris Chapman again for his tournament life.

Sites had {8-Diamonds}{5-Spades} against the {a-Spades}{6-Diamonds} of Chapman. The board ran out for maximum, or at least some drama when it came {5-Hearts}{j-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}. Chapman won the hand and the tournament with the ace on the turn.

Sites will take home $20,720. There was some short discussion of a deal before heads up play began, but the actual heads up portion of the tournament didn't last too much longer than the actual conversation.

Chris Moneymaker Eliminated in 4th Place ($10,080) (full)

Level 22 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Chris Moneymaker - 4th Place
Chris Moneymaker - 4th Place

Chris Moneymaker continued his epic slide right out of the tournament. It almost seemed there was nothing he could do to change his fate. He lost somewhere close to 600,000 chips in about 45 minutes after the dinner break.

During his last stand he shoved three times, and the third time was the curse.

First he was under the gun, shoved and everyone folded.

Second, he was in the big blind and shoved on David Lackey when Lackey limped the small blind. Lackey folded.

The third time, the action folded to him in the small blind. He peeled {a-Spades}{10-Clubs} and paused for a second. He shoved all in for 145,000 and Mike Sites snap called. Sites had {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts} and had Moneymaker dominated.

The board ran out {a-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{6-Spades}, teasing Moneymaker with the possibility of a flush, but ultimately closing the door and ending his main event run.

Denny Grizzle Eliminated in 5th Place ($7,672), Lackey Breaks 1 Million (full)

Denny Grizzle - 5th Place
Denny Grizzle - 5th Place

Denny Grizzle's main event came to an end in fifth place. After he accumulated some chips through unanswered all ins, he finally ran into David Lackey, who can't miss as of late.

Lackey raised to 28,000 preflop and Grizzle called from the big blind. The flop was {10-Spades}{9-Clubs}{8-Spades} and Grizzle checked. Lackey bet 40,000 and the action was back on Grizzle. He tanked for about 30 seconds, then shoved all in. Lackey didn't hesitate too long before calling.

Grizzle flopped a straight with {q-Hearts}{j-Hearts} and Lackey was behind with {10-Hearts}{8-Hearts}. He didn't stay behind for long as the {8-Diamonds} hit the turn, giving Lackey a full house. The river was irrelevant and Lackey busted Grizzle in fifth place.

Mike Melkersen has been eliminated in seventh place by HPO Ambassador Chris Moneymaker.

Moneymaker stalled out for a little, in terms of stack building, after getting beat in a few hands by chip leader Mike Sites. On this hand, Moneymaker's raise from the small blind led to an all in and Melkersen's elimination.

Melkersen limped the button ahead of Moneymaker's small blind. Moneymaker raised, making it 20,000. When it was Melkersen's turn to act, he went ll in and Moneymaker called.

Moneymaker had {a-Clubs}{10-Spades} against the {j-}{8-} of Melkersen. The board ran out {10-Hearts}{q-Spades}{k-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{q-Diamonds} and gave Moneymaker the elimination.
