Brian Cavaliere Wins the HPO Charles Town Regional Championship for $39,756

Level 23 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante

Brian Cavaliere - Winner of the Hollywood Poker Open Charles Town Regional Championship

Brian Cavaliere, like so many poker players out there today, can trace his interest in the game to a singular event which occurred more than a decade ago. That catalyst was the improbable transformation of Chris Moneymaker from amateur accountant to World Series of Poker Main Event champion in 2003, a victory which launched the fabled "Moneymaker Boom." And just like Moneymaker - who won his way into the big game by first winning a satellite event - Cavaliere parlayed a small sum into the biggest score of his life.

Cavaliere - who hails from Hazlet, New Jersey and thanked his parents Arthur and Mary for their steady support - plunked down $235 to enter one of the HPO Mega Satellites earlier in the week, weaving his way through the minefield to secure his seat in the $1,800 buy-in Main Event. With Chris Moneymaker in the house throughout Day 1 (the champ fell short late in the day after building a big stack early on), Cavaliere did his best to emulate the man himself, surging ahead of the field to end play with 181,600 - good for the biggest stack in play by a good 60,000.

Entering today's final day of play with a target on his back, Cavaliere simply played his game and forged ahead, maintaining his composure despite admittedly feeling the pressure. According to Cavaliere - a former online player who prefers cash games - this was only the third lie tournament he had ever played... and that's including the Mega Satellite entered just a few days ago. Despite playing against experienced pros like Lee Childs and Joseph Stiers throughout Day 2, Cavaliere held his own and focused on the task at hand. In doing so, he managed to put on a throwback performance, turning his initial investment into a major payday just like Moneymaker before him.

Along the way, Cavalieri weathered the storm known as swings, coming back from the brink after sliding early on by doubling through Childs. After reaching the final table and watching the money bubble burst, Cavaliere sent David Lackey to the rail in 6th place, before dispatching Jim Boyd (5th place) soon afterward. From there, he maintained his stack while grinding away, ultimately reaching heads-up play against Stiers with only 200,000 to work with against the young pro's 1.2 million.

Cavaliere displayed tremendous mettle in battling back from such a disadvantage, and while it was a fortuitous flip that helped him begin the comeback, he still managed to peck away and pick Stiers apart. Finally, after a lengthy heads-up duel, Cavaliere finished Stiers off in style, flopping a flush to leave his opponent drawing dead with the title on the line.

For the win, Cavaliere earned $39,756 - with $2,500 of that amount representing the coveted prize package awarded to HPO Regional Championship. That package includes travel accommodations and a seat in the HPO Championship Event at the M Resort Casino Spa in Las Vegas this June. Here's hoping Cavaliere continues his impressive, Moneymaker-like run from satellite entrant to champion with another impressive performance there.

Joseph Stiers Eliminated in 2nd Place ($24,555)

Level 23 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Joseph Stiers - 2nd Place
Joseph Stiers - 2nd Place

After entering heads-up play with a 1.2 million to 200,000 chip advantage, Joseph Stiers was on the brink of taking down this HPO Charles Town Regional Championship. Unfortunately for Stiers, Brian Cavaliere proved to be a resilient opponent, doubling through early on by winning a flip and never looking back.

Stiers found himself riding a short stack when he looked down at {A-Spades}{9-Hearts} in the hole, and the ace-high hand was enough to prompt an open-jam from the button.

Cavaliere held the {K-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds} and saw his chance to complete the epic comeback - and a wire-to-wire performance after ending Day 1 as the chip leader - and he made the call to put Stiers at risk.

Both players held respectable holdings, but all thoughts of a sweat immediately ended when the dealer spread a flop of {2-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}. Just like that Cavaliere's flopped flush left Stiers drawing dead, sending the HPO Regional Championship trophy and $39,756 his way.

Stiers pocketed $24,555 for his runner-up finish, adding to his already impressive record on the tournament circuit.

Cavaliere Doubles Through Stiers to Pull Nearly Even

Brian Cavaliere is Hanging Tough in His Heads-Up Match Against Joseph Stiers
Brian Cavaliere is Hanging Tough in His Heads-Up Match Against Joseph Stiers

Despite beginning heads-up play facing a severe chip disadvantage, Brian Cavaliere is making a match of it after recently doubling through Joseph Stiers.

The money was in the middle before the flop, with Cavaliere taking his {k-Diamonds}{6-Hearts} up against the {3-Hearts}{3-Clubs} tabled by Stiers.

When the flop rained down {9-Hearts}{k-Spades}{7-Diamonds} Cavaliere's pair of kings gave him the lead, and the turn ({2-Hearts}) and river ({j-Clubs}) changed nothing. After paying off the loss, Stiers will now have to buckle down to finish things off.

Mark Castaldo Eliminated in 3rd Place ($18,708)

Level 22 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Mark Castaldo - 3rd Place
Mark Castaldo - 3rd Place

Holding the button, Mark Castaldo opened for 34,000 and Joseph Stiers defended his big blind by flatting.

The flop rolled out {6-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{4-Hearts} and Stiers tapped the table, prompting Castoldo to c-bet for 45,000. Stiers wasted little time in using his big stack to bully, and he announced all in with authority in his voice.

When he heard Castaldo snap-call, Stiers was resigned to his fate and flipped up his {3-Clubs}{5-Clubs} expecting to have run into a higher straight. At the sight of Castaldo's {A-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}, Stiers perked up just a bit, as he realized his draws were still live.

Turn: {3-Diamonds}

Just like that one of those draws was delivered, and Stiers' two pair put Castaldo on the brink. The river blanked off with the {j-Spades}, and despite waking up with the best preflop hand in Hold'em, Castaldo was sent to the rail with a 3rd place finish.

Stiers now holds an overwhelming chip lead entering the heads-up contest against Brian Cavaliere.

Lee Childs Eliminated in 4th Place ($11,693)

Level 21 : 6,000/12,000, 1,000 ante
Lee Childs - 4th Place
Lee Childs - 4th Place

Lee Childs opened to 25,000 from the cutoff, and with the button in front of him, Mark Castaldo flatted to see a flop.

The dealer fanned the {q-Clubs}{10-Spades}{3-Diamonds} across the felt and Childs led out for a 32,000 c-bet. When Castaldo flatted once more, the {k-Hearts} hit the board on the turn.

Childs slowed down with a check this time, and Castaldo pounced on the pot with a 45,000 bet. After deliberating for more than two minutes, counting out the calling stack, adding raising chips and then returning the excess amount, Childs decided to see the river.

Fifth street produced the {8-Diamonds} and Childs checked once more, only to hear Castaldo announce himself all in for more than 200,000 - a bet which barely had Childs covered.

Diving deep down into the tank once again, Childs pondered his options for more than four minutes, staring silently at Castaldo and studying in search of a tell.

Apparently Childs found something to move on, and he suddenly made the call while peering over to see what Castaldo brought to bear. When the {K-Diamonds}{q-Spades} was revealed to be the bad news, Childs could only wince when he saw that his read had been off base. Childs and his {k-Spades}{9-Diamonds} had been behind the whole time, and when it was all said and done, his stack was shipped to the next seat over.

"Nice hand..." said Childs sincerely, shaking hands with his three opponents before heading over to commiserate with his father Bill. Childs earned $11,693 for the 4th place finish, while also locking up the Points Standings Championship for this HPO series stop.

Joseph Stiers Spikes River to Claim Chip Lead

Joseph Stiers Just Took the Chip Lead From Lee Childs With a Club on the River
Joseph Stiers Just Took the Chip Lead From Lee Childs With a Club on the River

On a board showing {3-Clubs}{a-Clubs}{k-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} by the turn, and a sizable pot chock full of charcoal grey T5000 chips up for grabs, Joseph Stiers tried to take it down with a 75,000 wager.

Lee Childs was undeterred, however, and he raised all in for 211,000 effective, putting Stiers at risk if he chose to call off.

After agonizing briefly over the spot he found himself in, Stiers decided that enough of his chips were already committed to justify a call. Tabling {k-Clubs}{2-Clubs} for a pair and a flush draw, Stiers found he had a few less outs than he envisioned when Childs rolled over the {k-Diamonds}{10-Spades} for two pair on the turn.

River: {5-Clubs}

"Sorry..." offered Stiers at the sight of his salvation. "I just had too much in there to fold."

Childs was impassive in defeat, absorbing the bad beat like a consummate professional, and the two players effectively reversed their chip positions for the second time at this marathon final table.

Castaldo Doubles Through Childs

Level 21 : 6,000/12,000, 1,000 ante
Mark Castaldo
Mark Castaldo

The action folded around to Lee Childs in the small blind, and with only Mark Castaldo and his 10-big blind stack standing between him and an uncontested pot, Childs simply moved all in to put Castaldo at risk.

Castaldo held the {Q-Clubs}{7-Clubs} and did not appear to like his spot, but with his stack slipping into the danger zone, he made called off and hoped for the best.

Childs tabled the {6-Clubs}{6-Diamonds} and despite Castaldo's marginal holding, the two were actually racing for the pot.

Flop: {a-Hearts}{q-Spades}{q-Hearts}

Castaldo jumped out to a huge head start by flopping trip queens, and when the {7-Diamonds} rained down on the turn, the pot was officially his. The {k-Diamonds} completed the board on the river, and Castaldo doubled through to keep his hopes for an HPO Regional Championship title intact.

Lee Childs Scores Massive Double With Pocket Rockets

Lee Childs Just Put Himself in Position to Take Down His First HPO Regional Championship

Joseph Stiers held the big stack and opened to 22,000 from under the gun, only to see Lee Childs three-bet to 52,000 from the button.

Stiers assessed the situation for a moment before announcing himself all in, and Childs had to confirm before snapping the bet off with {A-Clubs}{a-Hearts}.

With 297,000 to his name, it was Childs who was all in and at risk, but he was in a great spot with his bullets up against Stiers' {7-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}.

The final board ran out {6-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{a-Spades}{k-Hearts}{2-Clubs} and with a flopped set of aces, Childs scored the double to effectively reverse the chip positions, claiming the chip lead in one fell swoop.

Jim Boyd - 5th Place
Jim Boyd - 5th Place

Jim Boyd open-shoved for his last 85,000 from the hijack, and Brian Cavaliere made the call from the small blind.

Showdown:

Boyd: {8-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}
Cavaliere: {10-}{10-}

The pocket pair produced by Cavaliere put him in command of the hand, and when the board ran clean with no diamonds or straights, he sent Boyd packing with a 5th place finish.

Cavaliere, meanwhile, re-assumed his position of power after entering the day with a significant chip lead.
