Magnus Bags Magnificent Stack to Lead Day 1b

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Nadya Magnus

Day 1b of Heartland Poker Tour Ameristar East Chicago $1,650 Main Event wrapped up after 12 hours of play on Friday with another 20 players punching tickets to Monday's Day 2, joining the 16 who advanced from the first starting flight.

Nadya Magnus had a stellar day at the felt, surpassing Day 1a leader Craig Casino by bagging 497,000 to lead the remaining field. Magnus, who gained some measure of poker fame with an appearance on televised cash game "The Big Game," actually peaked even higher than that with north of 500,000 after she crushed an opponent's jacks with pocket kings during the final level of the night.

With over $500K in cashes including numerous scores in $5k+ events, Magnus brings a good deal of experience to the felt and now has a commanding chip stack heading into Day 2, which could prove a tough combination for her opponents to handle.

Mark Morris also threatened Casino's mark before ultimately falling just 1,000 short with 463,000. Jim Kasputis, David To, Chris Moon and Prince Gaspard also advanced, although the latter has the shortest stack with 40,000 so he has plenty of work to do if he doesn't opt to try to bag bigger on a subsequent flight.

Another player making it through was defending HPT Player of the Year Aaron Johnson. He had a slow start but quietly accumulated chips in the middle stages to get around 250,000 before sliding a bit late and finishing with 130,000.

The Minnesota pro did work on the tour in 2018, with four cashes, including one win for $86,189 and a sixth-place finish in the season-ending championship for $37,043.

The 127 entries on the day slightly edged past the 116 of Day 1a to push the total to 243. Shawn Roberts, Michael Hudson, Mike Shin and Ryan Olisar were some of the notables to show up but brick out.

They'll have another chance on Saturday's Day 1c, set for a noon start. Come back to PokerNews to see what develops on the third starting day of the HPT Main Event.

Nadya Magnus
Nadya Magnus

Nadya Magnus was already sitting with one of the biggest stacks but it just got a whole lot heftier when she got {k-Spades}{k-Hearts} in preflop from the big blind against an early player with {j-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}. The board ran out {2-Hearts}{6-Spades}{a-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{a-Diamonds} and Magnus collected 155,000 or so from her busted opponent.

Campbell Can't Fade

Level 13 : 1,500/2,500, 2,500 ante
Mark Morris
Mark Morris

On a flop of {9-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}, Mark Morris bet 7,000 into a pot of 27,000 only to have big blind Andrew Campbell check-shove huge for 74,000. Morris thought a bit and slid in calling chips.

Mark Morris: {7-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}
Andrew Campbell: {9-Clubs}{5-Clubs}

Morris was drawing big but missed the {2-Hearts} turn.

"Eight or diamond, eight or diamond, eight or diamond," he encouraged the dealer.

He brought forth the {j-Diamonds} and Morris pumped his fist in silent victory as Campbell headed for the doors.

Promising Start Fizzles for Ralph Massey

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Ralph Massey
Ralph Massey

Ralph Massey began the day surging with one of the biggest stacks but it's a disappointing early exit for him as he just busted right after dinner. He got his last 11,000 or so in preflop with {10-Spades}{9-Spades} on the button against an opponent on his left with {a-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}. The {a-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} brought barely a sweat for Massey and he gathered his stuff to exit.

Pupillo shook his head and splashed in a couple of chips. Onyia slid forward {7-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} for quads and Pupillo tabled {q-}{q-} and left with a "nice hand."

Jim Juvancic was big blind and made either a bet or raise to 2,500 on a {6-Clubs}{a-Clubs}{q-Diamonds} flop, which Shawn Roberts called from late position. Both players checked the {a-Diamonds} turn, bringing a {9-Diamonds}. Juvancic shoved and Roberts snap-called his last 7,000 or so.

Juvancic had {a-Spades}{q-Clubs} for the nut full house, while Roberts tabled {a-Hearts}{10-Spades} and headed for the door.

Players are on their first break of the day.

Welcome to Day 1b of 2019 HPT Ameristar East Chicago Main Event

HPT Ameristar East Chicago
HPT Ameristar East Chicago

The first of four flights is in the books and another day has dawned, so it's time for Day 1b of 2019 Heartland Poker Tour Ameristar East Chicago $1,650 Main Event.

Day 1a saw HPT's most active grinder, Craig Casino, book a ticket to Day 2 with the biggest stack, while a handful of other notables advanced.

On the other hand, plenty of players bricked out as just 16 of 116 entries made it through, so a busy Day 1b should be on tap.

The plan is identical to Day 1a, as no hard stop was reached at 13 percent of the field. So, 15 levels will be played again, each lasting 40 minutes. Players get 30,000 in starting chips at 100/100 blinds and progress to 2,000/4,000/4,000 with a 60-minute dinner break after the ninth level of play. Registration will again close after said dinner break, with players allowed unlimited reentry.

Action is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. local time here just outside of Chicago. Stay tuned to PokerNews for updates throughout the day from the tournament floor.
