The Heartland Poker Tour (HPT) Player of the Year race is always competitive, and right now Greg Wood is out in the early lead thanks to back-to-back final tables and winning the HPT Lawrenceburg for $119,101.

Whoever wins the POY title will claim more than bragging rights. Our POY earns a $10,000 package to use next season as well as complimentary hotel accommodations at those six stops. In case of a tie, all winning players will split the POY prize package evenly.

Randall Doubles Up With Trips

Level 5 : 200/400, 400 ante
Robert Randall
Robert Randall

The board read {5-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{3-Diamonds} and Robert Randall moved all in for his remaining 12,000. His opponent in Seat 2 thought for a while before deciding to make the call.

Randall turned over the {3-Spades}{3-Clubs} for trips. His opponent did not like what he saw and reluctantly turned over his hand to show {8-Hearts}{4-Hearts}. The river was the {6-Diamonds} to confirm the double up for Randall.

"That harmless looking three," remarked one of the players at the table as Randall stacked his winnings.

French Calls on the River

Level 5 : 200/400, 400 ante

A player in middle position raised to 1,400 and both blinds called. The flop came {10-Hearts}{j-Clubs}{q-Spades} and it was checked around.

The turn was the {k-Diamonds}, Robert French in the small blind checked, and the big blind bet 1,100. The middle position player folded and French called.

The river was the {6-Clubs} and again French checked and the big blind bet 5,200. Frank tanked with four cards to the straight on the board but eventually made the call and turned over {10-Diamonds}{10-Spades}. The big blind mucked.

Get to Know Reigning HPT Player of the Year Aaron Johnson

Level 6 : 200/500, 500 ante
Aaron Johnson
Aaron Johnson

One of the best stories of 2018 was the incredible year of Minnesota’s Aaron Johnson. Back in May, PokerNews spoke with Johnson about leading the Player of the Year races on both Season 9 of the Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) and Heartland Poker Tour (HPT) Season XIV.

Over the next seven months, Johnson maintained his lead on the MSPT, and while he lost the HPT lead for a bit, he ultimately ended with it thanks to a deep run in the season finale. That allowed Johnson to become the first player to ever win POY titles on two different tours in the same year.

For doing so, Johnson won a $10,000 prize package for each tour.

“It feels amazing,” Johnson told PokerNews. “Coming into the year I certainly wanted to make a run at MSPT POY (which has always been a goal of mine), but I never imagined that I’d be in contention for multiple POY titles. To actually achieve it is unreal.”

Unfortunately, Johnson isn't here at the HPT Columbus today.

Stein Hits River to Stay Alive

Level 6 : 200/500, 500 ante

Two players were all in on a board that read {7-Spades}{4-Hearts}{10-Spades}. Seat 7 was the larger of the two all-in stacks while Matthew Stein was the shorter stack.

Seat 3 was deep in the tank deciding whether to call and give himself a chance to bust both players. Eventually he folded, making it a heads-up pot.

Seat 7 turned over a set with the {4-Spades}{4-Diamonds} and Stein showed the {q-Spades}{j-Spades} for the flush draw.

The turn was the {q-Hearts} but the river came the {a-Spades} to bring the flush home for Stein and keep his stack alive.
