Near Triple For Trost

Level 7 : 300/600, 600 ante
Craig Trost
Craig Trost

A player checked the {6-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{3-Clubs} flop from the big blind, and the under-the-gun player bet 1,500. Craig Trost called, leaving himself just 800 behind, and the big blind came along as well.

The big blind led out for 5,000 on the {5-Spades} turn, and the under-the-gun player tanked for a minute before folding. Trost wasted little time committing his last 800.

Craig Trost: {3-Spades}{3-Diamonds}
Opponent: {j-Hearts}{5-Clubs}

Trost's set could still be beat by a river jack or five, but the {8-Spades} brought Trost new life with an essential triple-up.

Mangold Sets 'em Up

Level 7 : 300/600, 600 ante
Jason Mangold
Jason Mangold

On a {5-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}{j-Clubs} flop, Jason Mangold had an opponent in middle position at risk for his last 20,000, and Mangold had his opponent in rough shape.

Opponent: {q-Spades}{10-Spades}
Jason Mangold: {5-Clubs}{5-Spades}

Mangold's set locked up the hand on the {2-Clubs} turn, and the {10-Clubs} river was too little, too late for Mangold's opponent.

Gutierrez Gets Big Value

Level 6 : 200/500, 500 ante
Justin Gutierrez
Justin Gutierrez

After a raise from a player in the cutoff, Justin Gutierrez three-bet to 4,700 in the cutoff, only to be met with a four-bet to 10,000 from the cutoff. Gutierrez called.

Both players checked the {k-Spades}{3-Hearts}{j-Hearts} flop, and the cutoff checked again on the {8-Spades} turn. Gutierrez bet 12,000, and the cutoff called.

The cutoff checked again on the {8-Hearts} river, and Gutierrez bet 25,000. The cutoff called, only to muck after Gutierrez tabled {k-Clubs}{k-Diamonds} for kings-full.

The Most Unlikely of Doubles For Everett

Level 5 : 200/400, 400 ante
Leo Mitchell
Leo Mitchell

Leo Mitchell has a second wind in today's Day 1c flight thanks to a huge stroke of luck.

As Craig Casino shared with us, Mitchell got his last chips in with {a-}{6-} on a {j-}{6-}{x-} board, and ran into {j-}{j-}.

"I was all the way out of my chair, congratulatin' him!" Mitchell said.

The board had other ideas for Mitchell, however, as two sixes rolled off on the turn and river to give him quads and the double!

Morris Sunk By Kings

Level 5 : 200/400, 400 ante
Mark Morris
Mark Morris

A player raised to 1,000 from middle position, and Mark Morris three-bet to 3,500 from the hijack. Nazim Seferovic four-bet jammed for around 20,000 on the button, and action folded back to Morris, who called off for 11,500 total.

Mark Morris: {a-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}
Nazim Seferovic: {k-Hearts}{k-Clubs}

"I got three outs!" Morris noted.

The {8-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} flop saw Morris shout, "Diamond!" in hopes of making a runner-runner flush draw. The {3-Diamonds} turn gave him the flush draw, but the {9-Spades} river left him one diamond short, and he sent the last of his chips to Seferovic.

Ditrapani Busts One

Level 4 : 100/300, 300 ante
Nicola Ditrapani
Nicola Ditrapani

Nicola Ditrapani raised to 800 from early position, and was called in four spots before the {3-Hearts}{a-Hearts}{2-Clubs} flop fell.

Action checked to a player on the button, who bet 2,000. Only Ditrapani called.

Ditrapani checked again on the {4-Hearts} turn, and the button flicked in a 5k chip. Ditrapani called again.

The {a-Diamonds} completed the board on the river, and Ditrapani checked for a third time. The button jammed for 10,600, and Ditrapani went into the tank.

"Well, you either got a flush or nothin'," Ditrapani said. He thought for a few more moments, then called.

"I got an ace?" the button said inquizitively, tabling {a-Clubs}{8-Clubs}. Ditrapani rolled over {a-Spades}{5-Spades} for a wheel, and he eliminated his opponent.

That's a Mean One, Mr. Grinch

Level 2 : 100/200, 0 ante
David Moses
David Moses

Michael Schlegel raised to 600 from early position, and was called by a player in middle position, as well as David Moses in the hijack.

Schlegel bet 900 on the {j-Hearts}{q-Clubs}{4-Clubs} flop, and only Moses called.

Schlegel bet 1,600 on the {j-Diamonds} turn, and Moses stuck around with another call.

The {8-Hearts} hit the river, and Schlegel quickly checked. Moses thought for a few moments, looking down at his Grinch card protector as he did, before checking back, and after Schlegel tabled {5-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}, Moses rolled over {k-Hearts}{q-Hearts} for the winner.

HPT Felt

The final starting flight for the HPT Ameristar East Chicago $1,650 Main Event kicks off at Noon local time, and the largest field of the weekend is expected to come out in force, looking to join the 44 survivors from the first two flights.

In yesterday's Day 1b flight, 29 players (including one double-bagger, meaning his smaller stack from Day 1a will be removed) survived from a field of 172 entrants, with Edward Blazer and his 463,000 chips leading the way. Defending champ Nick Davidson (430,000) finished with a healthy stack as well, and both players sit ahead of Day 1a chip leader Robert Keeling and his 422,000 in chips.

Other players that made it through include Peter Palanca (359,000), Roger Campbell (347,000), Bradley Beetz (191,000), Mike Shin (116,000), and former HPT Player of the Year and WSOP Main Event champ Greg Raymer (82,000).

Today's Day 1c flight will play fifteen 40-minute levels, with a fifteen-minute break after every three levels, and a dinner break after Level 9. Registration remains open through the completion of the dinner break (approximately 7:30 p.m.) and a single re-entry option is available for players unfortunate enough to bust. All players that make it through today's flight will combine with the 44 survivors for Day 2 action on Sunday, January 19th at 11 a.m. local time to play down to a final table of nine. Those lucky enough to earn a spot at the televised final table will reconvene on Monday, January 20th at Noon, and play down to a champion.

Cards will be in the air at Noon local time, so be sure to stay tuned to PokerNews as we follow the final flight here at HPT Ameristar East Chicago.
