Hoang Leads Final Table at HPT Golden Gates

Level 24 : 15,000/30,000, 30,000 ante
Tan Hoang

Day 2 of the Heartland Poker Tour Golden Gates $1,650 Main Event saw 72 players return with their eyes set on playing a full day and advancing to the final table. The day lasted eight and one-half hours, with Tan Hoang leading the way at the end of the day with a total chip count of 3.875 million.

Hoang entered the day with 331,000 in chips, a stack that had him in the top 10 going into Day 2. He had increased that to over 600,000 by the time 45 remained and play reached the money, making him one of the chip leaders, and he never looked back from there, eclipsing 1 million in chips before the redraw at 27 happened for the final three tables.

With two tables remaining, Hoang hit a huge double up against 11th-place finisher Steve Wilkie when his kings proved best against Wilkie’s nines in a blind-on-blind battle. He then found himself with 2.4 million, and used that stack to win a few big pots without showdown to build to his end-of-day total of 3.875 million.

Robert Meglich finished the day in second place after knocking out Syd Masters in 10th place to end the day by winning a huge pot after his king-queen held versus Masters’ king-ten. Stacks got in on a king-high flop and Meglich held to end the day with over 2 million in his stack.

Two other players finished with seven-figure stacks. Jeff Banghart (1.805 million) and John Small (1.415 million) will also take above-average stacks into Monday’s final table.

Day 2 Action

Over one-third of the returning Day 2 field of 72 still needed to be eliminated before play made the money. Eliminations came quicker than anticipated, with the field reaching 47 players after only about 75 minutes of play. However, the first break of the day came and went with only one other elimination occurring. The bubble burst shortly thereafter when Dapo Ajayi (34th place - $3,896) knocked out Nate Zoller. The two HPT Golden Gates final table participants from July, 2019 got it in with ace-king and ace-queen, with Zoller unable to improve to become the bubble boy.

Players who found the rail prior to Zoller’s departure included Ben Keeline, Alex Greenblatt, [Matt Livingston[/b], and John Beauprez.

Others to make their way to the rail, albeit via the payout desk included Danny Gonzales (33rd place - $3,396), Spencer Champlin (26th place - $4,796), Greg Jennings (16th place - $5,815), and Nick Pupillo (13th place - $7,733).

Day 3 will be played Monday with cards in the air at noon local time. Play will resume with 33:12 on the clock in Level 24 (15,000/30,000/30,000). The final table will be played upstairs in the overflow room for all who wish to attend and view live. The tournament will also be live-streamed with a 30-minute delay.

PokerNews will be on hand to provide accompanying coverage. Make sure to follow to see who comes out on top to earn the winning prize of $137,876.

Syd Masters Eliminated in 10th Place ($10,251)

Level 24 : 15,000/30,000, 30,000 ante
Syd Masters
Syd Masters

Robert Meglich raised to 60,000 from early position and received calls from Jeff Banghart in middle position, Syd Masters in the hijack, and David Levy, who defended his big blind. The four went to a flop of {5-Spades}{2-Clubs}{k-Diamonds} and Levy checked. Meglich made a continuation-bet of 100,000 and Banghart folded.

Masters then went all in over the top. Levy folded and Meglich asked for a count, which totaled 760,000. He thought for about a minute and then verbalized a call.

"Do you have ace-king?" asked Masters, tabling his hand. Meglich said he did not and turned up his cards as well.

Syd Masters: {k-Spades}{10-Hearts}
Robert Meglich: {k-Spades}{q-Clubs}

"Okay, I've got outs," said Masters, seeing he was currently outkicked and in need of help to avoid becoming the tenth-place finisher in the tournament. The turn came {a-Hearts}, giving Masters a few extra outs to a chop. However, the river fell {7-Spades} and he found himself eliminated from the tournament, marking the end of play for Day 2.

Stay tuned for official chip counts and a recap of the day's action.

Hoang Wins Huge Pot Without Showdown To Extend Chip Lead

Level 23 : 10,000/25,000, 25,000 ante
Tan Hoang
Tan Hoang

Glenda McCall saw action folded to her on the button and raised to 75,000. Both David Levy and Tan Hoang called from the small- and big blinds, respectively, and the three saw a flop of {5-Clubs}{7-Spades}{10-Clubs}.

Levy was first to act and led out with a bet of 175,000. Hoang then found action upon himself and went into the tank until a clock was called on him two minutes later. Before the clock started, he raised to 375,000. McCall quickly folded and Levy put out chips to call.

The turn fell {9-Hearts} and Levy led out again, putting in a bet of 400,000. Hoang went back into the tank for a minute or so and then announced a raise all in. The move sent Levy into the tank, causing him to count out his chips with a pained look. Ultimately, he sent his cards to the muck and the pot was sent Hoang's way, bringing him over 3.5 million along the way.

McCall Gets a Double and a Bit More

Level 23 : 10,000/25,000, 25,000 ante
Glenda McCall
Glenda McCall

Jeff Banghart was in middle position and opened to 60,000. He was called by both Syd Masters in the cutoff and Glenda McCall, who defended her big blind.

The flop came {8-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} and McCall checked. Banghart put out a continuation-bet of 75,000 and looked over to Masters, who deliberated for a few seconds. Banghart told him that he seemed to like his hand more before the flop, and Masters seemingly agreed as he folded.

McCall then found action back on her and instantly check-shoved all in. Banghart tossed in a chip to call.

Glenda McCall: {10-Spades}{8-Spades}
Jeff Banghart: {9-Hearts}{9-Clubs}

Banghart shrugged, seeing McCall's top two pair was ahead of his nines.

"The nuts," said somebody on the table. They were only incorrect for so long as the turn fell {10-Clubs} to give McCall a full house, tens full of eights. She would need it as the river fell {9-Spades} to give Banghart a worse full house, securing her the double as the tournament continues with ten-handed play.

Steve Wilkie Eliminated in 11th Place ($10,251)

Level 22 : 10,000/20,000, 20,000 ante
Steve Wilkie
Steve Wilkie

Steve Wilkie put in his last 25,000 from the cutoff and saw David Levy raise to 100,000 from the small blind. Corey Williams called from the big blind and the flop came {8-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{8-Spades}. Levy made a continuation-bet of 150,000 and Williams quickly folded, making it time for Levy and Wilkie to table their hands.

Steve Wilkie: {3-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}
David Levy: {a-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}

The turn came {a-Hearts} to leave Wilkie with two outs, neither of which he would hit as the river fell {10-Clubs} to send him to the rail in 11th place. Players are now redrawing for the unofficial final table of 10, with play continuing until one more player is eliminated before bagging and tagging to return for Monday's final table.

Redraw information and updated chip counts will be provided shortly.

Michael Campbell

Michael Campbell moved all in for 375,000 from the hijack and Jeff Banghart called from the cutoff.

Michael Campbell: {a-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}
Jeff Banghart: {a-Spades}{k-Clubs}

Campbell was significantly behind with ace- dominated by Banghart's. The runout came {3-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{q-Spades}{4-Spades}{5-Spades} to leave things unchanged and Campbell was sent to the rail in 12th place, becoming the elimination of the tournament to earn a five-figure payday.

Nick Pupillo Eliminated in 13th Place ($7,733)

Nick Pupillo

John Small saw action folded to him in the small blind and put out 150,000 on top of the 10,000 he had committed from his small blind. Nick Pupillo was in the big blind and looked down at his cards before slamming his stack of remaining T5,000 chips onto the felt.

John Small: {q-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}
Nick Pupillo: {5-Spades}{6-Clubs}

Unfortunately for Pupillo, he had called off his last three or so big blinds only to be in dominated going to the flop. The board ran out {8-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{5-Clubs}, resulting in Pupillo's hand remaining second best as he was sent to the rail in 13th place shortly after returning from the dinner break.

Richard Mijares went all in from early position and saw Steve Wilkie go all in over the top of him from middle position. All remaining players folded and the two turned up their hands.

Richard Mijares: {a-Diamonds}{8-Spades}
Steve Wilkie: {q-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}

Mijares was at risk of seeing his tournament run come to an end as the dealer fanned a flop of {5-Spades}{5-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}. The turn {4-Clubs} gave him four more outs to a gutshot straight, however the river fell {10-Clubs} and he was left with the second-best hand, hitting the rail in 14th place as a result.

An all in and a call were heard as Andreas Ramadanis had gotten his stack in with action against Jeff Banghart.

Andreas Ramadanis: {a-Clubs}{7-Spades}
Jeff Banghart: {10-Clubs}{10-Hearts}

Ramadanis needed to hit an ace in order to stay alive and was unable to do so as the board ran out {6-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{9-Clubs} to send him home in 15th place, bringing Banghart close to 2 million in chips in the meantime.

Greg Jennings Eliminated in 16th Place ($5,815)

Level 21 : 8,000/16,000, 16,000 ante
Greg Jennings
Greg Jennings

There was over 200,000 in the middle on a board of {q-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{k-Clubs} and Corey Williams bet 140,000 from the cutoff after Greg Jennings checked to him from under the gun. Jennings check-raised all in and Williams asked for a count, which totaled 527,000.

Williams went into the tank for over a minute before dropping in a stack of chips to call.

Greg Jennings: {a-Hearts}{j-Spades}
Corey Williams: {q-Hearts}{10-Clubs}

WIlliams was unhappy with seeing Jennings having outplayed him by check-raising all in with Broadway. He had four outs left with one chance to hit them. Luckily for him, he would do just that as the river fell {q-Clubs} to give Williams the full house, sending Jennings to the payout desk as the 16th place finisher as a result.
