Who Will Walk Away With the $131,184 Top Prize at HPT St. Louis?

Kyle Cartwright
Kyle Cartwright

From a starting field of 392 entrants, just nine return for the final day of the Heartland Poker Tour (HPT) Hollywood Casino St. Louis $1,650 Main Event. The final table, which will be filmed for a future television broadcast, will also be streamed on the HPT's Twitch channel on a short delay (no hole cards will be shown due to Missouri gaming laws), featuring Jerod Smith and the HPT's Korey Stewart on commentary. The PokerNews blog coverage will sync with the stream.

The returning players already have a $12,776 cash locked up, but all eyes are on the top prize of $131,184, along with the trophy and a $3,500 Championship Package good for the Season XVI HPT Championship at the end of the year.

Austin McCormick returns to his second HPT St. Louis final table with the chip lead today, with a stack of 2,775,000 to work with, good for nearly 140 big blinds at the start of play. WSOP Bracelet winners Kyle Cartwright (2,120,000) and Brett Apter (1,735,000) sit in the other two medal positions at the moment, while Kevin Garosshen (1,590,000) and Brent Cunningham (1,125,000) round out the chip millionaires club.

Hoppe Turns a Set on Cartwright

Level 23 : 15,000/25,000, 25,000 ante
Laura Hoppe
Laura Hoppe

Kyle Cartwright raised to 50,000 from under the gun, and was called by Laura Hoppe in middle position and Kevin Garosshen in the big blind.

Action checked through the {2-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}{q-Spades} flop, and the {9-Spades} fell on the turn. Garosshen checked, and Cartwright bet 80,000. Hoppe called while Garosshen folded.

The {k-Diamonds} hit the river, and Cartwright bet 190,000. Hoppe tanked for a minute before raising to 405,000, leaving herself 375,000 behind.

"Do you have jack-ten?" Cartwright asked. Cartwright eventually called after a stint in the tank, and Hoppe showed {9-Hearts}{9-Clubs} for a turned set. Cartwright flung his {a-Spades}{k-Hearts} face-up into the muck.

Cunningham Gets Lucky to Double Through Reeder

Level 24 : 15,000/30,000, 30,000 ante
Brent Cunningham
Brent Cunningham

Hand #1:

Brent Cunningham raised to 60,000 from the cutoff, and Brian Reeder three-bet to 175,000 from the button. Cunningham folded.

Hand #2:

The very next hand, Kyle Cartwright raised to 60,000 from middle position, and Cunningham three-bet shoved for 480,000 from the hijack. Reeder four-bet shoved for 1.3 million from the cutoff, and action folded back to Cartwright, who quickly folded.

Brent Cunningham: {k-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}
Brian Reeder: {a-Spades}{k-Hearts}

Reeder's Big Slick held on the {8-Spades}{8-Hearts}{7-Clubs} flop, but the {q-Spades} turn left him shaking his head, as Cunningham peeled a three-outer to leave Reeder looking for an ace to earn the knockout. The {4-Clubs} on the river changed nothing, and Cunningham doubled up.

Hoppe Doubles Through McCormick to Take the Chip Lead

Level 24 : 15,000/30,000, 30,000 ante
Laura Hoppe
Laura Hoppe

Laura Hoppe raised to 60,000 from the hijack, and Austin McCormick three-bet to 160,000 on the button. Hoppe called after a minute in the tank.

The {q-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} flop was checked by Hoppe, and McCormick bet 170,000. Hoppe called.

Hoppe checked again on the {5-Spades} turn, and McCormick fired another barrel, this time for 340,000. Hoppe called again.

The {4-Diamonds} hit the river, and Hoppe checked a third time. McCormick jammed, putting Hoppe to the test for her last 995,000. Hoppe tanked for a few minutes.

"Go big or go home, eh?" Hoppe said to McCormick. She called, and McCormick tabled {a-Hearts}{9-Clubs} for a triple-barrel bluff. Hoppe slammed down {a-Spades}{q-Hearts} for top pair, top kicker, and Hoppe, the start of the day short stack, now holds the chip lead with eight players left.

"That was a bad ass call, eh boys?" Hoppe added after the hand.

Neil Patel Eliminated in 8th Place ($15,115)

Level 24 : 15,000/30,000, 30,000 ante
Neil Patel
Neil Patel

Neil Patel jammed for 205,000 from under the gun, and Kyle Cartwright called from the hijack.

Neil Patel: {a-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}
Kyle Cartwright: {a-Spades}{8-Spades}

Patel's prospects grew dim after the {10-Clubs}{9-Spades}{6-Clubs} flop, and the {7-Diamonds} turn left Patel looking for an eight for a chop. Cartwright's turned straight held on the {9-Diamonds} river, and the Missouri native exits in eighth.

Brian Reeder Eliminated in 7th Place ($18,252)

Level 25 : 20,000/40,000, 40,000 ante
Brian Reeder
Brian Reeder

Brent Cunningham raised to 85,000 from under the gun, and Brian Reeder immediately three-bet shoved for 420,000 next to act. Action folded to Kyle Cartwright in the big blind, who tanked for a minute before four-bet shoving for 690,000. Cunningham folded.

Brian Reeder: {6-Spades}{6-Spades}
Kyle Cartwright: {q-Hearts}{q-Clubs}

Reeder's sixes needed to find a mate to survive, but the {k-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{2-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{j-Hearts} board ran dry to send Reeder home in seventh.

Austin McCormick jammed for 620,000 from the hijack, and Kyle Cartwright three-bet shoved on the button, chasing out the blinds.

Austin McCormick: {j-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}
Kyle Cartwright: {a-Spades}{k-Clubs}

The {4-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{5-Clubs} flop kept Cartwright's Big Slick in front, and the {8-Diamonds} turn meant McCormick had six outs to survive. The {5-Diamonds} river was a brick, and the Day 2 chip leader McCormick exited the tournament area in sixth.

Kyle Cartwright jammed for 940,000 from the small blind, and Brent Cunningham called off his last 885,000 in the big blind.

Kyle Cartwright: {10-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}
Brent Cunningham: {a-Spades}{8-Hearts}

Cunningham's ace-high held on the {k-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{6-Hearts} flop, but the {j-Hearts} fell on the turn, giving Cartwright a gutshot to go with his live cards. The {5-Diamonds} hit the river, and Cartwright was left with under a single big blind, which he lost in the next hand to Cunningham.

Brett Apter Eliminated in 4th Place ($37,359)

Level 29 : 50,000/100,000, 100,000 ante
Brett Apter
Brett Apter

Brett Apter was able to more than triple his last 55,000 in chips up one hand after the monster hand with Laura Hoppe, then got his new 265,000 chip stack in preflop the very next hand against Brent Cunningham.

Brett Apter: {10-Spades}{3-Spades}
Brent Cunningham: {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts}

Apter pulled ahead on the {8-Spades}{9-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} flop, and held on the {6-Spades} turn and {2-Clubs} river to double back to 680,000.

After folding his big blind, Apter three-bet shoved for 480,000 from the small blind over a raise from Kevin Garosshen on the button. Garosshen called.

Brett Apter: {2-Spades}{2-Clubs}
Kevin Garosshen: {a-Spades}{9-Clubs}

Apter's attempt to spin up the crumbs came to an end when the {3-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{a-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{a-Diamonds} board gave Garosshen a full house and left the WSOP Bracelet winner Apter out in fourth.

The {6-Hearts} hit the river, and Hoppe bet 700,000. Garosshen called after a short stint in the tank, and Hoppe tabled {j-Hearts}{5-Spades} for just a pair of fives. Garosshen tabled {9-Spades}{2-Spades} for a pair of nines, and Garosshen now has over half the chips in play.
