LAPT Grand Final

City Center Rosario
City Center Rosario

The luxurious City Center Casino in Rosario, Argentina, billed as the largest casino in South America, is playing host to one of the most anticipated events of the year, the 2010 PokerStars.net Latin American Poker Tour Season 3 Grand Final. Players have flocked from around the world to take part in the $4,700 + $300 Main Event that will run from September 23rd-26th, 2010.

The latest season of the LAPT produced a bevy of highlights. In November of 2009, Amer Sulaiman defeated Nicolas Cardyn to take down the LAPT Playa Conchal title and $172,095 first place prize. In February, Jose Ignacio “Nacho” Barbero took the LAPT scene by storm when he notched a win at the LAPT Punta del Este in Uruguay for $279,330. A short time later, a devastating earthquake caused the cancellation of the LAPT Viña del Mar event in Chile, leaving Barbero to continue his streak at the LAPT Lima stop in June. Amazingly, Barbero defeated Ben Barrows to take down back-to-back LAPT titles and another $250,000 in prize money. Come June, the poker world held its collective breath to see if Barbero could make it three in a row at the LAPT Florianópolis stop in Brazil. Unfortunately for him, it was a young Austrian by the name of Matthias Habernig who emerged victorious.

All of these players are expected to return for a shot at another LAPT title, but standing in their way will be plethora of established pros including: U.S. Team Pros Victor Ramdin and Dennis Phillips, Brazilians Andre Akkari, Gualter Salles and Maria Mayrinck, Mexicans Angel Gullen and Christian de Leon, Costa Rican Humberto Brenes, and Argentinean natives Veronica Dabul and Leo Fernandez, just to name a few.

Last night, a welcome party was held at JARANA in the City Center Casino that allowed players and spectators to mingle with Team Pros while enjoying traditional Argentinean entertainment. Many of the PokerStars Team Pros were attendance and literally danced the night away, especially Dabul and Ramdin. Hopefully they both managed to get a good night’s sleep as the tournament is set to begin at 12:00 ART. Stay tuned to PokerNews for up-to-the-minute coverage of the 2010 LAPT Grand Final LIVE from Rosario, Argentina!

Shuffle Up and Deal

After a stirring PokerStars video projected on the back wall of the tournament room, the TD announced Shuffle Up and Deal!

The button is in seat quatro and blinds are 50/100.

Most players are in their seats and getting settled for five 60-minute levels. Then they will have a dinner break and be back for three more levels to round out Day 1.

"Seis Mil"

Knowing the value of your chips is important as Dennis Phillips learned in a recent hand. There was about 800 in the pot with a board reading {A-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{Q-Clubs}{6-Clubs} when Phillips tossed two chips into the pot.

"Seis mil," the dealer announced, which translates to six thousand.

"Whoa," Phillips shouted, apparently not aware he had bet so much. "Can I take it back?" The dealer explained the bet would stand and Phillips seemed anguished. His opponent, who was clearly put off by such a large overbet, quickly mucked. Phillips flashed the {A-Hearts} and added, "I had two pair." Maybe it wasn't a mistake afterall.

The International Language of Poker

"Raise," said Maria "Maridu" Mayrinck, interrupting her conversation with tablemate Terrence Chan. "Oops, I mean sumo."

"I think you can say it in English," Chan said, but Mayrinck decided to go the safe route and say everything in both English and her native Portuguese.

Her raise to 300 got one caller. Mayrinck fired 400 at the {a-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} flop, and her opponent called again. But he folded to her next bet after the {3-Clubs} turn. "My first pot, and it's a big one," she smiled.

Action on You, Senior

All of the players were given release forms to fill out when they first arrived, so those who are just sitting down need to fill them out. Apparently they've been so focused on the forms that they've been forgetting about the cards in front of them.

An announcement was just made reminding the players that the game does not stop while you're filling out a form and you must take a break from your paperwork when action is on you.

Chip Values

The chip denominations for the tournament currently consist of five different colors. Here are how the values break down:

Green = 25
Black = 100
Pink = 500
Yellow = 1,000
Blue = 5,000

Each player started with 20,000 in chips, although one player has already found himself out the door when his straight fell victim to his opponent's rivered full house.

Habernig Comes to Argentina

Most recent LAPT winner Matthias Habernig only needed half an hour to double up. He made trip eights on the flop against an opponent who was willing to commit his whole stack with an overpair. Habernig's trips held to knock out his opponent and make him the early chip leader.

Details of another big hand with trip eights on their way.

Salles Takes One Down

There was about 7,000 in the pot and a board reading {j-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds} when Gualter Salles bet 3,225. His opponent in Seat 8 made the call and the two saw the {4-Hearts} hit the river. Salles looked perplexed and opted to check. Seat 8 checked behind as Salles revealed the {8-Clubs}{8-Diamonds} for a flopped set. Seat 8 mucked and Salles raked in the pot, increasing his stack to around 30,000.
