Dinner Break!

Level 6 : 200/400, 75 ante

The players have been given a 75-minute dinner break. Roughly 230 will return to start Level 7 just before 8pm local time.

Play Resumes

Level 6 : 200/400, 75 ante

Players are back, with bellies full of ceviche and other local dishes that were served at the casino buffet. We have four levels to go for today.

Chips Flying Now

Level 7 : 300/600, 100 ante

Normally the post-dinner period is marked by a torpor, the dreaded "food coma". That's not the case today. In the first twenty minutes, as I was making the rounds looking for fresh chip counts, I saw five different all-in hands play out. LAPT Brazil champion Alex Manzano was among the first out when he made a late-position steal with a short stack of 3,500 and ran into another player's pocket queens. He sheepishly turned over {8-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} and did not get there.

At a different table pocket tens beat ace-queen with a ten on the flop; pocket kings went down to pocket sevens and [ack]{k-Clubs} on a board of {6-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{a-Spades}; and chip leader Mario Lopez took a small hit with pocket jacks against a short stack's pocket queens.

We're guesstimating the field will be trimmed in half, to about 120, by the end of the day. But the remaining players seem not to want to waste any time getting there.

Check out Family Brenes!

Level 7 : 300/600, 100 ante
The youngest Brenes, Roberto, is leading his elders.
The youngest Brenes, Roberto, is leading his elders.

Look, it's early. Super early. But in a week that saw Team PokerStars Pros Vanessa Selbst (Main Event) and Jason Mercier (Bounty Shotout) repeat as champions of NAPT Mohegan Sun, we feel like anything can happen. And right now each of the three members of family Brenes in today's field -- Humberto Brenes, Alex Brenes and Roberto Brenes -- has more than double the average stack. Brothers Humberto (67,000) and Alex (61,000) are being bested by Humberto's son Roberto (85,000).

Again, it's early. But how weird and wild would it be to see more than one Brenes make it to Day 4? This week, maybe not so weird.

Chop 'em Down

Level 8 : 400/800, 100 ante

In the hour and twenty minutes since 237 players came back from dinner, 60 players have busted. Recent inductees into the ranks of the busto include Team PokerStars Pro Christian de Leon, whose seat at Humberto Brenes' table is now occupied by a different player.

As we wait for the leaders to further separate themselves from the field before the end of the day, I've been looking at the little mini-stories in the room. The four members of PokerStars Team Online are one of those mini-stories; each one has had mixed fortunes throughout the day.

Fredy Torres was looing strong all day but clearly ran into some post-dinner trouble. He moved his last 6,500 in a few minutes ago under the gun with {k-Hearts}{10-Hearts} and was taken on by a player with {a-Hearts}{q-Spades}. Torres was shaking hands by the turn of a {6-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{2-Spades}{7-Diamonds} board and out the door a few moments later.

Jorge Arias has been trying to grind it out, but has never seemed to move much above 30,000 in chips. As we come closer to the end of Level 8, he's short-stacked with 18,000.

Karlo Lopez and Jorge Limon are both above par, at 68,000 and 53,000 respectively. Each has had a comfortable stack throughout the day and look to be ready to cruise through the last two levels of the night.
