Justin Scicluna Bags a Milly to Lead Day 1c of MPF Grand Event

Level 16 : Blinds 6,000/12,000, 12,000 ante
Justin Scicluna
Justin Scicluna

There was a fantastic atmosphere in the absolutely packed Portomaso Casino today, with players coming from far and wide to enjoy the Malta Poker Festival's extensive schedule.

Day 1c of the €300,000 guaranteed €550 Grand Event was a hive of activity, and after sixteen 40-minute levels of play, 31 players qualified from the 206 entrants. Those figures bring the total number of entrants to 446, with 67 players through to Day 2.

Home-grown player Justin Scicluna rose to the top of the standings once the dust settled, bagging up 1,066,000, steadily building his stack throughout the day.

Scicluna was closely followed by Denmark's Jan Jensen (917,000), who made a chip-handling error that might have cost him dearly, but in fact led to a double-up. Alessio Assennato (754,000) of Italy completes the podium places.

Jensen appears the most experienced of the three with live recorded cashes of $38,000, and a deep run here would represent a career-best score for all of the top three.

Defending champion Domenico Lando was in the field today, but just missed the Day 2 cut. No doubt he'll be back for another shot in the remaining flights.

Zuberovksi Busts to Cadoni on Bubble

Level 16 : Blinds 6,000/12,000, 12,000 ante
Aleksandar Zuberovski
Aleksandar Zuberovski

Aleksandar Zuberovski raised to 135,000 from the button, leaving himself around 35,000 behind. Niccolo Cadoni was in the big blind, and he thought Zuberovski was all-in, flicking in a single calling chip.

Forced to make a call, Cadoni put Zuberovski all-in on the 842 flop, and Zuberovski called it off on the bubble.

Aleksandar Zuberovski: A10 All in
Niccolo Cadoni: 1010

Zuberovski was crushed versus Cadoni's overpair, and he could not find an ace on the 6 turn or 6 river, bringing an end to the day's play with 48 seconds left in Level 16.

Rueda Spikes River to Double

Level 16 : Blinds 6,000/12,000, 12,000 ante

Adrian Rueda moved all in for 100,000, and Thomas Cazaletz rejammed for 190,000, forcing out all other opponents.

Adrian Rueda: A9 All in
Thomas Cazaletz: AK

Rueda was dominated, and seemed to be heading for the exits on the bubble after the J54 flop.

However the 10 turn gave him outs to the flush, to the collective groan of the watching crowd.

The 9 rolled off on the river to send Rueda the double-up, and the fact he got there with the pair rather than the flush led him to celebrate wildly. Cazaletz shook his head in disbelief, but took it in good spirits.

Trips for Reigstad

Level 15 : Blinds 5,000/10,000, 10,000 ante
Kjetil Reigstad
Kjetil Reigstad

Matteo Ferrara opened to 20,000 from the cutoff, and received action from Jaime Lozano Diaz on the button and big stack Kjetil Reigstad in the big blind.

Action was checked to Ferrara on the K66 flop, who fired out a bet of 13,000. Both of his opponents called.

The 9 turn was checked through to the 7 river. Reigstad led out with a bet of 55,000 and Ferrara called.

He was shown the bad news when Reigstad tabled J6 for trip sixes.

Sanz Bluff Catches

Level 14 : Blinds 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Marc Sanz
Marc Sanz

Marc Sanz was raking in a pot, after finding a river call of 72,000 into a big pot versus a jam from Michele Adamo with the covering stack.

The board read KJ35J and A3 was in front of Adamo, while Sanz had 75, finding the call with two pair jacks and fives.

The table were suitably impressed with Sanz's cajones, congratulating him on a number of occasions. Adamo could only grin and bear it.

Quads for Pedersen

Level 13 : Blinds 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Martin Pedersen
Martin Pedersen

A pot of 54,000 had arisen on a flop of 922 in a four-way pot. Manuel Janas, who appeared likely to have been the preflop raiser, fired out a bet of 15,000, and only Martin Pedersen called from the small blind.

On the 9 turn, Pedersen check-called a bet of 38,500 from Janas.

The Q river completed the board, and Pedersen changed tact, leading out with a bet of 40,000. Janas was confused by the move, and spent at least three minutes grimacing, throwing his hands up in the air, and staring at the board.

Eventually he said "Ace-Queen? Sorry guys", and then folded after a bit more thought. Janas asked again, and Pedersen tabled 99 for quads. Janas claimed he folded jacks.

Janas Demolishes Davidson

Level 12 : Blinds 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Manuel Janas
Manuel Janas

A big pot of 80,000 had brewed on a completed board of 87393, in a hand between Manuel Janas in the hijack and Simon Davidson in the cutoff.

Janas fired out a bet of 105,000, which more than covered Davidson's remaining stack of 44,000.

After a few minutes of thought, Davidson looked like he was set to fold. He peered at his cards one last time, and started to begin the folding motion. However just as he did that, he also looked at Janas, who looked skywards to avoid eye contact.

That seemed to change Davidson's mind, and he suddenly got the rest of his stack into the middle.

Janas tabled K5 for the rivered flush. Davidson frustratedly mucked his cards and said "Nice hand" through gritted teeth as he left the table, clearly annoyed with himself for making the call.

Pecelj Sets Trap with Cowboys

Level 11 : Blinds 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Pavle Pecelj
Pavle Pecelj

Stig Eketrapp opened to 6,000 from early position, and received a call from Pavle Pecelj in the next seat and Michael Pivonia on the button - before Matteo Intiso three-bet jammed for 45,000 from the small blind.

Eketrapp got out of the way, but Pecelj four-bet to 100,000, forcing out Pivonia.

Matteo Intiso: 1010 All in
Pavle Pecelj: KK

Pecelj's flat with kings had worked out well, and he had Intiso crushed.

As always, it was still a sweat, the flop coming 987 to give Intiso an up and down.

The 5 turn was a great card for Pecelj, holding the king of hearts and removing two of Intiso's outs. The Q river bricked out and Pecelj moved over the 300,000 mark.
