Frenchman Not Surrendering Yet

Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier was down to 4,000 after doubling Justin Young a few minutes ago. With blinds up to 300/600, ElkY open-shoved with {j-Spades}{10-Clubs}, and Young called to put him in danger with {a-Spades}{6-Spades}.

The dealer brought ElkY the {10-Spades} in the door, but the {q-Clubs}{10-Spades}{5-Spades} flop also gave Young a flush draw. The {5-Clubs} turn paired the board. The river was black, giving ElkY a sweat, but the {7-Clubs} saw him safely doubled to 8,000. Young still has a nice lead with 42,000.

Marchese Claws Back

Phil Gordon couldn't close out Tom Marchese
Phil Gordon couldn't close out Tom Marchese

The youth movement is on display here in the Diamonds Bracket. Tom Marchese, who had -- pardon our French -- a hell of a 2010, found himself down to Phil Gordon. Gordon opened the button with a raise, then called an all-in re-raise from Marchese. Marchese's {a-Spades}{j-Spades} was the dominating favorite over Gordon's {a-Hearts}{9-Spades}, but Marchese give a rueful smile to the ceiling as if he sense a nine coming. No such luck for Gordon: there match is all-square again after both players missed a {10-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} board and Marchese's jack kicker played.

ElkY on the Rebound

Minutes after doubling his very short stack to a slightly larger short stack, Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier shoved his button for 7,450. His {q-Clubs}{8-Clubs} was up against Justin Young's {k-Spades}{7-Hearts}. The flop couldn't have been much better for Elky. He picked up top pair and a flush draw on {q-Hearts}{j-Clubs}{3-Clubs}. The {4-Diamonds} turn wasn't very interesting and left Young drawing to two outs. The {8-Spades} river was neither, giving ElkY two pair and his second double up.

Sit Back Down, Jen Harman

The match between Jen Harman and Huck Seed was almost dead-even when the players got all the chips in pre-flop. Harman was behind in the match by 1,200 chips but Seed was behind in the hand with {a-Clubs}{j-Diamonds} against Harman's {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}.

"I've got two flush draws," Seed dead-panned. One of those flush draws was in danger of filling by the turn of a {3-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{6-Clubs} board. Harman flashed a huge smile, stood up and shouldered her bag, preparing to be the third player eliminated. Instead the river double-paired the board, {6-Hearts}. She and Seed chopped the pot.

Gordon Back on Top

In a development that is sure to disappoint the forum community, Phil Gordon is back on top of Tom Marchese, 30,000 to 20,000. The two players got the chips in pre-flop on a flip, Gordon's {4-Diamonds}{4-Spades} against Marchese's {k-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}. Gordon flopped a set, {4-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}, but it's rarely that easy in hold'em. Marchese had an inside straight draw and picked up flush outs with the {3-Hearts} turn. The river {q-Spades} did not improve Marchese to the winning hand. The match rolls on.

ElkY Gonna Elk

Yet another all in on the very busy ElkY/Young table. After a raise, Bertrand Grospellier moved all in, and Young snap-called with {q-Spades}{q-Clubs}. His pair of black ladies needed to hold up against ElkY's {a-Spades}{10-Hearts}, but this is Elky we're talking about folks. All he needs from a flop is a backdoor draw. It came {k-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}, meaning he needed an ace or running hearts to double up. Might as well do it the fun way. A quick {3-Hearts} and {j-Hearts} later, and Grospellier doubled a third time, enough to retake the lead.

Raymer Has Big Cojones

One of our enduring regrets with the NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship is that, although the players are mic'ed up, they're not amplified. So we haven't been able to hear any of the chatter between Greg Raymer and Mike Matusow. We hope that at least one of the two players, who are long past their 2004 confrontation in the WSOP Main Event, made a "cojones" joke at some point in their match.

Raymer displayed just how big his cojones are by getting it all in with {3-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} against Matusow's {a-Clubs}{9-Spades}. Raymer was at risk, but his treys stood tall on a {k-Hearts}{2-Spades}{6-Spades}{10-Hearts}{6-Diamonds} board to take a big lead in the match against Matusow.

OMG! Galfond Moves On

Notch another scalp for the youth movement. Ahead in his match against Joe Hachem, Phil "OMGClayAiken" Galfond moved in for the kill. He tabled {a-Hearts}{8-Clubs} for a pre-flop all-in confrontation against Hachem's {q-Hearts}{5-Hearts}. Galfond paired his ace on the flop, {10-Diamonds}{a-Spades}{7-Spades}. Hachem couldn't find runners as the board finished out {j-Clubs}{10-Clubs} to end his tournament in the Round of 64.

Galfond will return tomorrow for a Round of 32 match against the winner of ElkY-Young.

Duck Cooks Eli's Goose

Vanessa Selbst had a sizable lead over Eli Elezra by the time he got all of his chips in the middle with {k-Hearts}{6-Hearts}. Selbst was in good shape with {j-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}. The {10-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{7-Hearts} flop gave Elezra a no help since his gutshot would make Selbst a higher straight. The {3-Diamonds} turn and {4-Clubs} river brought no lifeline for the high-stakes cash gamer with a big personality. Selbst moves on to the round of 32, where she will play Peter Eastgate. Selbst finished second in the $10,000 Heads-Up Championship at the World Series in 2008.

Raymer Finishes Off Matusow

With blinds now at extreme levels, Mike Matusow shoved 6,400 dark. Greg Raymer looked at one card, a king, and called.

Showdown:
Matusow: {q-Diamonds}{8-Spades}
Raymer: {k-Spades}{9-Diamonds}

Each player flopped a pair, {8-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{9-Spades}. Raymer's pair of 9s led Matusow's pair of 8s. The {5-Diamonds} gave each player two pair. Matusow gave a guttural shout before the river {6-Spades} sent him to the rail. The two players quickly shook hands and then Raymer raised one hand in acknowledgment to the crowd.

"Newman" moves on to the Round of 32 tomorrow.
