Jon Hanner Bags Day 1 Chip Lead in 2019 Canterbury Park Fall Poker Classic $2,500 High Roller

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Jon Hanner
Jon Hanner

The Canterbury Park 2019 Fall Poker Classic $2,500 High Roller has seen 14 levels play to their conclusion and Day 1 is in the books. When play began, only five players were in their seats. However, that number doubled in the first 10 minutes and eventually reached a total of 28 entries.

Of those 28, just eight remain and Jon Hanner (204,000) was the one to find himself atop the counts when chips went into bags. Hanner was one of the first to join the tournament, resulting in him playing one of the longest days of all participants in the field. Despite the early start, he spent the first eight-plus levels with roughly a starting stack.

Then he picked up back-to-back hands, doubling up with queen-jack to the ace-queen of Cody Espeseth and knocking him out the following hand after his pocket jacks held versus Espeseth’s ace-queen suited. All of a sudden, Hanner was near 100,000 in chips and would stay there until just before the end of the night when he ran pocket queens into then-chip leader Ian Matakis’ pocket jacks to double and claim the chip lead.

Matakis finished the day fourth in chips with 119,500, just behind Vic Peppe (135,000) and Joseph Beasy (120,000). Like Hanner, Matakis spent much of the day grinding, finding the felt and reentering before beginning to build. He hit a quarter-million in chips at one point and appeared to be a lock as end-of-day chip leader before running his jacks into Hanner’s queens. Nonetheless, he will be one of the four players taking an above-average stack into Day 2.

The other four players to find a bag were Daniel Schmidtknecht (84,000), Blake Bohn (71,500), Jeff Petronack (57,000), and Kou Vang (51,000). All eight will return for Day 2 on Friday for the scheduled 12:30 p.m. restart.

Players will come back to the beginning of Level 15 (2,000/4,000/4,000) with 40-minute levels until a winner has been determined. Come back to PokerNews to catch the finale.

Hanner Takes Chip Lead With Biggest Pot of the Tournament

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Jon Hanner
Jon Hanner

Stacks got all in preflop between Jon Hanner in the big blind and Ian Matakis, who was in the hijack. Hanner was at risk for his tournament life.

Jon Hanner: {q-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}
Ian Matakis: {j-Spades}{j-Clubs}

Matakis's jacks were way behind Hanner's queens as the flop fell {a-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}, bringing his total number of outs from two down to one due to the fact that a diamond would give Hanner a flush. The turn {5-Spades} and river {8-Hearts} were clean for Hanner and he secured the double. He pushed his chips forward and they were totaled to be 103,000.

After paying off the chips, Matakis now has 132,000; meanwhile, Hanner has taken the chip lead as the only player with over 200,000 in chips in front of him.

Bohn Takes from Petronack

Level 13 : 1,500/2,500, 2,500 ante
Blake Bohn
Blake Bohn

Blake Bohn opened to 6,000 from under the gun and action made its way back to Jeff Petronack, who defended his big blind. Both players checked the flop {7-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{k-Hearts} to take action to the turn {6-Hearts}.

Petronack made a bet of 7,000 and Bohn took about five seconds to match it, bringing the river {8-Clubs}. Petronack fired out another 17,000 and Bohn instantly called.

Petronack showed {j-Hearts}{10-Spades} for jack-high, prompting Bohn to table {k-Spades}{q-Hearts} for a pair of kings, earning him the pot and taking him to second in chips with nine still remaining.

Koppel Runs Into the Flopped Nuts; Matakis Takes Huge Chip Lead

Level 12 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Ian Matakis
Ian Matakis

Jared Koppel was just seen getting up from his seat and exiting the tournament area, wishing Ian Matakis a nice hand as he left. Matakis was kind enough to recount the hand, saying that opened to 4,000 from the hijack and received a call from Koppel.

The two went heads up to a flop of {4-}{7-}{5-} (rainbow) and Koppel checked. Matakis made a continuation-bet of 4,000 and Koppel called. The turn came {q-Spades} and Koppel continued with another bet of 21,000. Matakis called.

The river fell {2-} and Koppel shoved for his remaining chips. Matakis called.

Jared Koppel: {q-Clubs}{8-Clubs}
Ian Matakis: {8-Spades}{6-Spades}

Koppel's top pair of queens was no good versus Matakis' flopped straight and he hit the rail in tenth place, bringing the tournament down to nine players for a split second, resulting in the field being condensed down to one table.

However, Cody Espeseth has fired again upon seeing the tables breaking. As a result, the final table is now being played ten-handed with around 40 minutes left in the registration period. An updated redraw will be provided shortly for the final table.

Peppe Cooked

Level 11 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante
Vic Peppe
Vic Peppe

There was around 8,600 in the middle from preflop action between Ian Matakis in the cutoff, and Vic Peppe, who was in the big blind. The flop came {9-Diamonds}{q-Spades}{6-Spades} and Peppe checked. Matakis bet 6,000 and Peppe thought for a few seconds before putting in chips to call.

The turn came {j-Hearts} and Peppe jammed in his last 28,900. Matakis quickly called.

Vic Peppe: {q-}{10-}
Ian Matakis: {q-Hearts}{9-Hearts}

Peppe's had flopped top pair and turned an open-ended straight draw prior to committing the last of his chips. However, he found himself up against Matakis' two pair and was in need of hitting one of the ten cards in the deck that would keep him alive. He was unable to do so as the river fell {5-Spades}, leaving him out of chips as he got up from his seat, congratulated Matakis on a nice hand, and wished the rest of the table good luck before exiting the tournament area, bringing the number of remaining players to 11 in the process.

Schmidtknecht Picks Off Peterson, Sends Him To the Rail

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Daniel Schmidtknecht
Daniel Schmidtknecht

Nathan Peterson was on the button and saw action folded to him. He raised to 3,000 and was three-bet to 8,200 by Daniel Schmidtknecht, who was in the big blind. Peterson called.

The flop came {10-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} and Schmidtknecht made a continuation-bet of 8,000. Peterson thought for about 30 seconds and then put his chips into one tall stack that he slid forward to go all in. Schmidtknecht immediately called.

"I have a ten," said Peterson, tabling {10-Spades}{8-Spades}.

Schmidtknecht showed {a-Hearts}{q-Spades} for top pair, top kicker to put him way out in front of Peterson's second pair.

The turn {2-Diamonds} and river {a-Diamonds} left Peterson's tens second-best to Schmidtknecht's aces up, resulting in his departure from the tournament as Schmidtknecht finds himself with over 100,000 in chips, becoming the only player currently with a six-figure stack.

Stevermer Cold Four-Bets All In

Level 8 : 400/800, 800 ante
Dennis Stevermer
Dennis Stevermer

Jon Hanner was under the gun and opened the action with a raise to 1,800. He was three-bet to 4,500 by Daniel Schmidtknecht, who was in early position on Hanner's left. Dennis Stevermer was next to act in middle position and four-bet shoved all in. Action folded back to Hanner, who folded.

Schmidtknecht then found action on him and asked for a count, which was totaled to be 29,100. He went into the tank for over two minutes while Stevermer sat still, staring into the distance. Eventually, he let his hand go and the dealer set the deck down onto the felt to ship Stevermer the pot.

Meanwhile, Jared Koppel was eliminated from the tournament on the adjacent table after finding himself short due to doubling up Ian Matakis. He has since reentered and been seated in the same seat he formerly occupied to get back in on the action as the number of entries has climbed to 26.

Beasy Five-Bet Shoves the Turn

Level 7 : 300/600, 600 ante
Joseph Beasy
Joseph Beasy

There was around 4,500 in the middle on a board reading {4-Spades}{4-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{8-Spades} and Joseph Beasy put out a bet from the big blind. He was raised to 3,500 by Nathan Peterson, who was in the hijack, prompting a four-bet to 7,000. Peterson went into the tank, thinking for close to a minute.

"Raise, ten thousand on top," said Peterson, putting out a four-bet to 17,000. Beasy then went into the tank for about 35 seconds, deciding to five-bet all in to put Peterson to a decision for his remaining 42,000. Peterson didn't have much of a decision, sending his cards to the muck shortly after the announcement as Beasy took down the pot sans showdown with his five-bet rip.

Meanwhile, Jesse Rockowitz was eliminated from the tournament a few hands prior to bring the number of players currently in contention to 15.

Maas Dusted by Koppel

Level 6 : 300/500, 500 ante
Jeff Maas
Jeff Maas

Jared Koppel was on the button and had action on him with 5,800 out in front of him already. He was facing a reraise all in for just under 16,000 from Jeff Maas, who was in the small blind. Eventually, he decided to toss in a chip to call.

Jeff Maas: {q-Spades}{q-Clubs}
Jared Koppel: {a-Spades}{j-Clubs}

Maas' queens were out in front until the flop came {a-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}. He let out a bit of a groan upon seeing the flop and the turn fell behind it {10-Spades}. He acknowledged his likely fate and began to sit up from his seat as the river {j-Diamonds} fell, creating a slight pause to see if he had hit a two outer to stay alive. Alas, he did not and he finished getting up to make his way out of the tournament area as the event's most recent casualty.

Jesse Rockowitz
Jesse Rockowitz

Erick Wright got the last of his chips all in preflop from the cutoff and received action from Jesse Rockowitz, who was in middle position.

Erick Wright: {2-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}
Jesse Rockowitz: {6-Hearts}{6-Clubs}

Wright ran his deuces into Rockowitz's sixes and was in need of finding a third to stay alive. He was unable to do so as the board ran out {9-Spades}{8-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{6-Spades}, sending him to the rail at the expense of Rockowitz.
