Round Two

"Can I buy in again?"
"Can I buy in again?"

Dan Purcel finished today's earlier flight with 133,000, having narrowly escaped bubbling with the help of a fortuitous triple-up late on. However, as he confirmed chip count with the floor staff and collected his €250 cash prize for making Day 2, it was crystal clear that his intention was to try and run up a bigger stack.

"Can I buy in again?" he asked.

The floorman confirmed that he could indeed buy in to the next flight, but clarified that he may only take through the bigger of his two stacks. That was all the incentive that Purcel needed, as he rushed to the cash desk to enter the second flight. He's currently sat with just 51,000, though, so is going to need to get busy to make his extended venture worthwhile.

Hundreds And Thousands

Level 13 : 2,500/5,000, 5,000 ante

There are currently 100 players remaining in today's second flight of Grand Prix Austria, and will be playing down until there are just 34 left, representing 10% of the total entrants. In the earlier flight, playing down to 10% of the field meant capping the blinds shortly before going hand for hand and, as things stand, it doesn't seem as though the outcome of this flight will differ greatly, if at all.

The average stack sits at 168,500, which represents a generous 28 big blinds, so there's still plenty of play left in this one.

The hyper-turbo is down to 39 players and will continue until there are no more than six players remaining.

Bizarre Blind Versus Blind

The big blind dragged the pot amid a sea of shocked faces
The big blind dragged the pot amid a sea of shocked faces

On table 32, action had folded all the way round to the small blind who put in a raise, with the big blind defending as the pair took a {6-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{5-Spades} flop heads-up. The player in the small blind put out a continuation bet, and the big blind held on, opting to see another card.

The turn brought the {10-Hearts} and, without much prior warning, all the money found its way into the middle! The small blind tabled {a-Hearts}{7-Hearts}, it seems as though he had picked up the perfect turn card on which to keep barreling, while the big blind had called it off surprisingly light, putting the lot in with {7-Diamonds}{5-Spades} for third pair no kicker. He needed to fade an ace or heart, and did so as the {k-Spades} hit the river, dragging the 340,000 pot amid a sea of mildly shocked faces.

Last Break Of The Day

Level 16 : 5,000/10,000, 10,000 ante

Our 57 remaining players are taking a short 10-minute break to grab a cup of coffee, while the dealers race off the 500-value chips as they will no longer be required for the duration of the tournament.

Our chipleader going into the closing stages of Day 1B is Vladimir Cocis, who just took out his latest victim in the hand before the break. He opened to 30,000 from middle position, with the player on the button making the call. The big blind saw this as a great spot to shove his last 81,000, with Cocis raising all-in to isolate. After some consideration, the player on button folded, and the cards were on their backs.

It was a classic flip situation: Cocis with the pair {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}, the big blind with the overs {a-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}. It was only a flip until the first flop card, as the dealer spread the {9-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{5-Diamonds} flop. The player in the big blind stood up in disgust as the {10-Clubs} came down on the turn, leaving him drawing dead. The pot was shipped Cocis' way, as he bundled together his 670,000-chip stack.

Quickest Call Of The Day So Far

Level 18 : 8,000/16,000, 16,000 ante

With action on table 24 folding all the way around, the player on the button decided to move all-in, amply covering both the blinds. No sooner had the words left his lips, the player in the small blind shouted, "yep!" and was also awarded a big, red "all-in" button. The big blind quickly got out of the way and the cards were on their backs.

The button's {a-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} was in bad shape against the small blind's {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds}, and it was all but over after he flopped top pair on {3-Clubs}{q-Clubs}{8-Hearts}. It was going to take running cards, of which the {10-Diamonds} appeared in precisely zero of those combinations, and the button was turned dead. The {7-Spades} was dealt on the river as a mere formality, as 110,000 was shipped from button to small blind, as he picks up a crucial double 14 players from the money.

Running Into It

Level 18 : 8,000/16,000, 16,000 ante

We lost one of our three remaining female players from this flight of Grand Prix Austria, when the player in the cutoff 3-bet shoved for 333,000 and ran into a monster waiting in the small blind who also shoved. The big blind and original raiser both took a moment before folding, but eventually made the right decision.

She rolled over {7-Hearts}{7-Spades} but was drawing just two outs, having run head first into the small blind's {a-Diamonds}{a-Spades}. The {q-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{5-Hearts} did not help, at all. The {8-Spades} bricked the turn, with the {q-Clubs} pairing the river, and that was all she wrote. We're now down to our last 41 players, seven from the money.
