Yu Dong Holds Lead Going into Day 3 of the 2017 Suncity Cup Finale Macau

Level 9 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Yu Dong Yang leads 2017 Suncity Cup going into Day 3
Yu Dong Yang leads 2017 Suncity Cup going into Day 3

The last of the Day 2 flights was also the last day of the 2017 Suncity Cup for player entries. This saw 55 survivors from the eight Macau starting flights and four prior legs in Jeju, Korea (24-30 Sept), Manila (13-16 Oct), Taipei (3-5 Nov) and Incheon, Korea (10-12 Nov) joined by a further 60 players to bring the Day 2B field up to 115.

This brings the total number of 2017 Suncity Cup entries up to an impressive 928, generating an HK$8,008,300 prize pool and surpassing the HK$8m guarantee.

The 32 players who made it through Day 2A will now be joined by the 36 surviving Day 2B players meaning Day 3 will see the 68 returning players attempt to reach the hallowed money spots.

While the tournament has already paid out HK$744,000 in cash to all the Day 2 qualifiers who made it through the respective Day 1's, some of the players chose to buy-in directly on the two respective Day 2’s for HK$38,000 so have not yet made any money at all. In fact, several of these players played Day 2A and Day 2B in addition to multiple HK$6,600 Day 1 starting flights so still have their work cut out for them if they want to see a return on their investment.

With the top 35 places paying out, 33 players will be leaving empty handed with those who make the money all guaranteed a payday of HK$50,900. However, it is the HK$1,925,000 first prize that all will be gunning for.

The man best positioned to take that down in China’s Yu Dong Yang who bagged up a monstrous 987,000 in chips – over 250,000 more than next closest Day 2B rival Korea's Je Ho Lee who bagged up 736,000 with China’s Zhao Yanchao (699,000) rounding out the top Day 2B stacks.

Dong began the day with a stack of 179,000 but had spun this up to over 300,000 by the time the second break came around. The Chinese player had more than double that of next closest rival, Hong Kong’s Sparrow Cheung, by the dinner break and did not look back. Dong dominated a great deal of his table action with very few of his hands making it to showdown with few players willing to tangle with his monster stack.

Dong’s fellow countryman Zhao Yanchao also played a great many hands and almost bagged the chip lead himself after hitting the nut straight holding six-seven on a three-four-five rainbow board. Unfortunately for Yanchao, his short-stacked opponent, holding pocket threes, hitting running kings to make a full house and deny the Chinese player the top spot.

Notables who managed to make it through included Canada’s Linh Tran, who earned a timely double-up after winning a race with pocket fives against the ace-king of Lu Fei on one of the last hands of the day to finish play with a stack of 319,000. Fei too managed to make it through, albeit with a much-reduced stack.

Japan’s Kosei Ichinose caught cards at just the right time to win two quick double-ups and finish the day with 336,000 and other notables who made the cut included Hong Kong’s Sparrow Cheung (387,000) and Danny Tang (347,000), Korea’sVivian Im (201,000) and Hong Kong’sJustin Chan (165,000) with the rest of the Day 2B survivors as follows:

Dong Wins More; Yanchao Catching Up

Level 9 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Zhao Yanchao
Zhao Yanchao

The ever elusive Yu Dong continues to dodge our watching eye but we arrived at his table in time to see him raking in yet more chips and the Chinese player is now sitting on a stack of 980,000.

The man closest to catching Dong is the ever-active Zhao Yanchao, whom we caught in action shortly afterward in a hand against Vivian Im that saw Yanchao edge up to second on the chip leaderboard.

It was Im who opened the action with a raise to 13,000 from middle position and a player on the button made the call, before small blind Yanchao squeezed to 35,000.

Im thought long and hard before making the call and the button folded to take play heads-up to a flop of {5-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}, which Yanchao led for 35,000. Im took her time thinking it over but made the call to swell the pot to 150,000 and the {5-Spades} came in on the turn.

Yanchao barrelled again, reaching for big chips this time and splashed out a bet of 63,000. Im really agonized over the decision before choosing to let it go, dropping down to 250,000 while Yanchao stacked up to 790,000.

Prize Pool Announced

Level 6 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
2017 Suncity Cup prize pool and payouts
2017 Suncity Cup prize pool and payouts

The numbers are in and the prize pool and payouts have been announced. The total number of Day 1 2017 Suncity Cup entries (including the four prior legs held outside of Macau) comes in at 832 and combined with the 96 Day 2 direct entries brings the total number of runners up to an impressive 928.

All that action has generated a prize pool of HK$8,008,300, beating the HK$8 million guarantee by HK$8,300 so those hoping for some juicy overlay will have to contain their disappointment.

The tournament has already paid out HK$744,000 in cash to all the Day 2 qualifiers who made it through the respective Day 1's and although we are still a good 24 hours away from making the hallowed money spots it’s still nice to know what everyone is playing for (aside from the fun factor of course) and the top 35 places will be getting paid.

A min-cash is good for HK$50,900 but it is the top prize all will have their eye on and the eventual 2017 Suncity Cup champion will walk away with HK$1,925,000, in addition to the trophy and title – and of course the all-important bragging rights.

A Gift for Chan

Now he has finally made Day 2, Hong Kong’s Justin Chan is wasting no time building a big stack, though he has been aided in his task by Eric Xiao.

We missed the hand that gave Chan all his chips but he was kind enough to tell us the story of how he got them.

According to Chan it was Xiao who was the initial aggressor, opening the action from under-the-gun with a raise to 3,600 and Chan, sitting UTG+1, peeked down to see {k-}{k-} and re-raised to 10,500.

Xiao made the call and the {k-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{6-} flop was just the one Chan was after. Xiao checked and Chan got cute and checked it back and a non-diamond {9-} hit the turn. This saw Xiao check and Chan now fire for 16,000, which Xiao called.

The arrival of another non-diamond {10-} on the river paired the board and gave Chan a full house and, after Xiao checked Chan bombed it and bet 42,000. This saw Xiao hit the think tank hard for a good five minutes before a tablemate called the clock. With just seconds to spare Xiao check-raised all in for 80,000 in total and Chan could not call fast enough and Xiao could only throw his {j-}{j-} away and head for the rail while Chan stacked up to 310,000.

Day 2B of the 2017 Suncity Cup Finale Macau Good to Go

Day 2B of the Suncity Cup Finale Macau
Day 2B of the Suncity Cup Finale Macau

Welcome back poker fans to the PokerNews live coverage of the 2017 Suncity Cup Finale Macau, brought to you from the Poker King poker room at the Venetian Macau.

The initial starting flight appetizer has been served, as has the first dish of the Day 2A Main Course and it’s time to move on to Day 2B of the Main Event.

Today is the second of two Day 2’s – Day 2B – and so far 32 players have successfully circumnavigated the tournament minefield and earned themselves a Day 3 starting berth after fighting their way through the initial eight starting flights and Day 2A.

There are already 55 registered Day 2B players registered, and they have all earned their seat the hard way, fighting through one of the eight initial starting flights.

However, registration is still open until the end of level 2 for those who have failed to make the cut so far and players can buy-in direct with all Day 2 players allowed a single additional re-entry before the end of late registration should they so chose.

This is the last chance though, and any player that busts today is out, although any one of the 32 entrants who qualified for Day 3 yesterday can still re-enter today should they so desire, with their largest stack brought forwards and the other taken out of play.

Players start with 100,000 in chips, with blinds starting at 500/1,000 with a 100 running ante and levels have now been extended to 60-minutes with each Day 2 comprising of nine 60-minute levels.

With an HK$38,000 (~US$4,870) direct buy-in the tournament looks primed to attract an eclectic mix of keen recreational players and seasoned professionals, all eager to win a share of the HK$8M (~US$1M) guaranteed prize pool.
