Zhong Cai Peng Tops Opening Flight of Poker King Cup Macau 2018 Main Event

Zhong Cai Peng tops Day 1a of the PKC Main Event
Zhong Cai Peng tops Day 1a of the PKC Main Event

The opening flight of the Poker King Cup Macau 2018 Main Event is done and dusted, with an impressive 166 players anteing up the HKD 16,500 entry fee and battling it out at the baize.

A total of 76 players successfully circumnavigated the tournament minefield to bag up chips, with China’s Zhong Cai Peng the man to top the counts after concluding play with a stack of 198,200.

Peng began his climb to the top midway through the day after sending Belgium’s Bart Luyckx to the rail after the pair tangled on an ace-high flop, with Peng’s ace king outkicking Luyckx’s ace four to take the Chinese player over the six-figure stack mark.

Peng continued to chip up and claimed another scalp in the form of Italy’s Mauro Francolini when the two clashed in a big pot, Francolini’s flopped nut straight getting rivered by Peng’s backdoor nut flush, with all the chips going in on the river to cement Peng’s pole position.

While Hong Kong’s Winson Yau made a spirited attempt to take the top spot and enjoyed a stint out in front, Peng turned it on during the last level of play to lock up the lead, with Yau finishing in second with a stack of 185,000.

Macau’s Gary Lam (168,700) rounds out the top of the podium. Taiwan's Hsuan Chao Chen (152,500) also finished the day on a high with China’s Liang Tong (143,300) completing the top five.

Despite clashing with Peng, both Francolini (114,300) and Luyckx (32,200) made it though to Day 2. Other notables to make it through include China’s Dongzhe Yang (67,300), Korea's Jeho Lee (49,300), World Series bracelet winner Preston Lee (47,800), and Thailand’s Phanlert Sukonthachartnant (25,600).

Players who were less fortunate in their endeavours to lock up a Day 2 berth included the USA’s Samantha Cohen and Hong Kong’s Ben Lai, though with unlimited re-entries allowed for the duration of the three Main Event starting flights any player who failed to make the cut can try again on Day 1b and Day 1c which both run tomorrow, Saturday 22 September, at 1pm and 6pm respectively.

Play began at 1pm local time (GMT+7) with eleven 40-minute levels on the schedule, concluding a little after 10pm and will follow the same pattern tomorrow for Day 1b so join us then for more thrilling tournament action.

Peng and Yau Tied at the Top

There is just half a level left before play concludes for the day, and the clock currently shows 25-minutes remaining, meaning that in 10-minutes it will be paused and the last number of hands will be drawn for the day.

At present, it appears to be a tie for the top, with both Winson Yau and Zhongcai Peng sitting on very similarly sized stacks - both close to 160,000 and change.

Other notable stacks include Korea's Daero Lee (130,000), China's Zhang Gui Fei (130,000), Macau's Gary Lam (145,000).

It appears that Hong Kong's Ben Lai has come a cropper and his seat is now empty - according to a social media post he ran pocket aces into pocket jacks pre-flop and was brutally two-outed - though fellow countryman Carson Wong is still in the running with a stack of 40,000.

Peng Busts Francolini to Take Chip Lead

Level 6 : 200/400, 50 ante
Zhongcai Peng
Zhongcai Peng

The cards are falling Zhongcai Peng's way presently, and the Chinese player has not long taken another scalp, with the chips of Mauro Francolini being added to Peng's stack to further aid him in his climb to the top of the leaderboard.

With close to 8,000 already in the pot on the turn, the community cards were spread {a-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{q-Spades} and Peng's 3,700 turn bet had been check-raised by Francolini in the big blind to the tune of 11,100. Peng deliberated over the decision long and hard, eventually throwing in the call to keep the pair in action to the {j-Spades} river.

Francolini quickly stacked up his remaining chips and moved them into the middle, bringing an instant call from Peng. The Italian turned over {5-Hearts}{3-Hearts} for the flopped straight, but could only shake his head in disgust at his misfortune as Peng, holding {a-Spades}{k-Spades} had rivered the nut flush. Francolini headed for the rail while Peng stacked up to 107,000, shooting him to the top of the counts.

Big Stacks Building

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante
Jeho Lee
Jeho Lee

A few big stacks are beginning to emerge now the players are finding their groove. One of these is Jeho Lee and we caught the tail end of a big pot that saw the Korean player climb close to the top of the leaderboard.

We missed the pre-flop action but were informed by Chile's Francesco Morales that it was a three-bet pre-flop pot. By the time we arrived there was close to 23,000 in the pot with the {3-Clubs}{q-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{4-Clubs} community cards spread face up on the felt and action was on Lee, who was the player in position in the hand.

Lee pulled the trigger for everything in front of him, shoving for 30,000 in total to send his opponent, sitting in the big blind, deep into the think tank, where she remained for several minutes. Eventually, a decision was reached and the call was made.

Lee turned over {5-Hearts}{8-Hearts} for the rivered backdoor runner, runner straight, something his opponent looked deeply unhappy about and she headed for the rail while Lee raked in his ill-gotten gains to climb to 73,000.

While Lee now has a healthy stack the honor of the chip lead belongs to Hong Kong's Darwin Lai, whom we caught in action in a hand against China's Jason Shao.

The action was all decided pre-flop, but it was a tense standoff that took several minutes to play out to say that no flop was dealt. It was Shao who was the initial aggressor, making it 800 to go from under-the-gun. Action folded around to Lai on the button and he popped it up to 2,000.

Shao responded with a four-bet to 11,000 and action was back on Lai. While he took his time over the decision Lai's response was forceful and the Hong Kong player moved all-in, having Shao covered by quite some margin. After several minutes agonizing over his decision, Shao opted to pick a better spot and pitched his cards into the muck to drop down to 10,000.

Lai did not show, but seemed happy enough to scoop the pot and climbed to 88,000 after the hand, making him the current frontrunner.
