Day 3 of the PKC Main Event; The Road to the Final Table

Sun Bin will be returning as one of the larger stacks
Sun Bin will be returning as one of the larger stacks

Welcome back to the PokerNews live coverage of the penultimate day of the Poker King Cup Main Event. The 518-strong field has been whittled down to a more manageable 62, and these survivors will be returning to the poker tables of the Venetian Macau Resort Hotel all set on reaching the official 8-handed Final Table, which the field will be playing down until.

The money bubble was reached and breached at the close of Day 2, and all remaining players are guaranteed a payday of at least HKD 27,900 (~$3,500). However, it is the HKD 1,464,000 (~$187,000) top prize that all will have their eye on.

The man leading the charge is Shi Qiang Lin, who bagged up an impressive 904,000 to top the Day 2 chip counts. Lin has close to $45,000 in live tournament winnings on his resume, his previous best and career-high a runner-up finish in an HKD 15,000 PLO tournament right here in Macau.

China’s Sun Bin is returning second in the counts with a stack of 720,000. Bin previously ran deep in the Oriental Poker Championship Main Event, held right here in the Venetian Macau back in May, and will be looking to better his 18th place finish.

Jeho Lee (666,000) is the third returning largest stack, with the Korean player also familiar with the taste of victory at the poker tables of the Venetian Macau, having taken down the 2017 Suncity Cup here back in November 2017 for a HKD 1.6M payday.

Other notables still in the running include Hong Kong’s Sparrow Cheung (301,000) and Kwok Chun ‘Derx’ Lai (201,000), Portugal’s Antonio Martins (207,000), and China’s Shan Huang (386,000).

Day 3 kicks off at 1pm local time (GMT+7) and blinds will be re-commencing at 4,000/8,000 with a 1,000 running ante, with the average stack in the region of 250,000 so there is still plenty of play left.

The PokerNews live reporting team will be on the tournament floor to bring you all the action as it happens so let's see who has what it takes to successfully traverse the road to the final table.

Cheung Chopped by Huang

Level 20 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Sparrow Cheung
Sparrow Cheung

Sparrow Cheung shoved all in for 89,000 in total from the button and Xiao Jun Yu asked for a count in the small blind. The dealer confirmed the amount and Yu tanked. Yu looked at his cards without really protecting them. Shan Huang in the big blind told Yu to protect his cards as he could see them. Yu turned away from Huang a bit and then tanked a bit longer. Yu then folded. Huang confirmed the amount again and then called.

Cheung asked for the floor and explained the situation. According to Cheung, it wasn't fair to him that Huang called with the extra information he managed to gather by seeing Yu's cards. The floor listened to the explanation of all three players and then conferred with the tournament director. When the floor came back, he gave Yu a 1-round penalty for not protecting his cards.

A huge discussion ensued as none of the three involved players agreed. The tournament director was pulled into the discussion and the whole situation was explained to him again. The TD stood by his initial ruling and Yu wasn't happy. Voices were raised and both Cheung and Huang defended Yu as he didn't do it intentionally. After several minutes, Yu's penalty was reduced to 3 hands.

The TD also ruled that the call was valid and the hand had to go on.

Sparrow Cheung: {J-Hearts}{9-Spades}
Shan Huang: {A-Clubs}{7-Hearts}

The board ran out {10-Clubs}{5-Spades}{6-Clubs}{10-Spades}{A-Spades} to not provide any help to Cheung and he was sent to the rail after all the commotion.

Lee Sets Up Wang to Extend Lead

Level 21 : 6,000/12,000, 2,000 ante
Jeho Lee
Jeho Lee

Day 3 is fast becoming the Jeho Lee show, with the Korean player using his monster stack like a club to beat the rest of the field into submission. The man on the receiving end of Lee's latest beating is Yang Wang, with the pair clashing in a huge hand that saw Lee nearly double his holdings.

Both players were super deep at the start of the hand, Lee sitting on close to 1.3 million, while Wang had around 950,000 or so. It was Lee who was the initial aggressor, making it 27,000 to go from the cutoff and Wang eyed up Lee's stack and made the call from the small blind, with big blind Lin Zhe Chen also coming along for the ride.

It was three-way to a flop of {a-Hearts}{10-Spades}{3-Hearts}, which was checked over to Lee, who continuation bet 40,000. Wang thought long and hard about it, cutting out chips for a raise before deciding against it and just sliding in the call. Chen folded to take the action heads-up to the {6-Clubs} turn.

A quick check from Wang brought another bet from Lee, this one for 100,000, which Wang called quickly. The {q-Clubs} river brought a third check from Wang and Lee reached for chips, lots of chips, pushing out a big two-handed bet of 375,000.

Wang sat back in his chair while he mulled it over. Should he call and lose he would drop down to 464,000 should he call and lose. That's exactly what happened as well, and after several minutes in the tank, Wang flicked in a yellow 1k chip to represent the call and Lee immediately rolled over {10-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} for a flopped set of tens.

An unhappy Wang counted out the chips to pay off Lee, who now has a massive 2.2 million stack and a healthy lead, with his next closest rival Liang song, who has around 1.1 million.

Yu Shoots Down Chen, Takes Lead

Li Yu
Li Yu

Lin Zhe Chen's Main Event looked to be ticking over nicely, with the Chinese player sitting on over a million in chips, but a brutal cooler against tablemate Li Yu has brought her tournament to a close and shot Yu to the top of the counts.

We arrived as stacks were being counted down with the community cards spread {k-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{a-Spades}{3-Spades}{4-Spades}. According to the table, all the chips went in on the turn, which was a bad one for Chen's {a-Diamonds}{3-Clubs} as Yu was holding {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs}.

The other bad news was that Yu had Chen covered, so the last woman standing is no more. Chen headed for the rail while Yu stacked up to 2.7 million.

The field is now down to 15 players courtesy of Wei Ran Pu, who sent Jian Han to the rail. Han was short and went out swinging, moving all-in from the big blind after Pu opened the action from early position and called off the extras.

Han was behind and at-risk, with the {6-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{3-Spades} flop giving Pu a flush draw to go with his two over cards. While Pu did not need to hit to win, the {a-Clubs} turn locked up the hand and sent Han to the cash desk, while Pu stacked up to 1.25 million.

Wei Ran Pu is the in-form player at present and has just scalped another player, sending Xiao Yin He to the rail in 15th place. He moved the last of his chips in from under-the-gun with {a-}{q-}, with Pu deciding to look him up from the big blind with the speculative {j-}{5-}.

Long story short, Pu hit, He did not, and the field is now down to 14 players as He headed to the cash desk to collect his HKD 87,400 in winnings, while Pu stacked up to 1.6 million.

Shi Qiang Lin

Day 2 frontrunner Shi Qiang Lin has become the latest casualty after some misfortune in a hand against fellow countryman Qi Cheng Du. It was a battle of the blinds between the two that brought Lin's tournament to a close, though he got it in real good.

The pair became embroiled in a raising war, with Du the man to ship first from the big blind with {a-Spades}{k-Diamonds} and Lin snapping him off with {k-Spades}{k-Hearts}. It looked as though Lin was in great shape for a double, until the {j-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} flop came down. There was no king to be seen on the {q-Clubs} turn and the {8-Clubs} river. Lin is out and Du stacked up to 1.65 million.

The new level was just seconds old and the field was reduced to 11, with Hong Kong's Chi Fu Sze falling at the hands of Chi Hi Fang.

It was Fang the man driving the action with the opening raise, calling Sze's big blind shove, and the cards were turned over.

Chi Fu Sze: {6-Spades}{6-Clubs}
Chi Hi Fang: {q-Spades}{j-Spades}

Sze found himself racing for his tournament life, and the {a-Spades}{8-Hearts}{q-Diamonds} flop was not a kind one, giving Fang the lead. The {9-Diamonds} turn and {k-Diamonds} river saw Sze ousted from the Main Event, with Fang stacking up to 1.1 million.
