Welcome to Day 1 of Event #9: $1200 No-Limit Hold'em Freezeout as the 2023 Potomac Winter Poker Open enters the home stretch with just four days of tournaments remaining. Today's two-day tournament is a new event for the Potomac Winter Poker Open and features a $50K guarantee. The "freezeout" element means there will be no re-buys or re-entering; once a player enters and busts — that's it.

The last $50K guarantee here at the Potomac Winter Poker Open was won by Vivian Lundgren late last night in Event #7: $400 No-Limit Hold'em after besting a 176-player field. Today's event marks the third $50k guarantee of the series thus far.

Players will begin with 50,000 in tournament chips with blinds starting at 100/100 and a 100 big-blind ante. Levels will last 40 minutes each throughout the event. Late registration will be available until the beginning of level 13 and Day 1 will end at the completion of level 18. Day 2 will resume on Friday, February 3 at 2 p.m.

Be sure to stick with PokerNews as we provide you with all the action during this prestigious freezeout event!

A player opened for 300 in early position and was three-bet to 1,500 from Joel Lanning in middle position. Action folded back to the original raiser, who called.

The flop came {q-Spades}{j-Hearts}{5-Diamonds} and it was checked to Lanning, who continued for 1,600. His opponent took a peek at his hole cards before sending them into the muck — conceding the pot to Lanning.

Loera's Turn Barrel Takes it

Level 1 : Blinds 100/100, 100 ante

William Loera opened to 600 from middle position and was called by one player in the hijack.

Loera continued for 700 on the {a-Clubs}{10-Spades}{4-Clubs} flop and his opponent called.

The {k-Spades} fell on the turn and Loera fired again — this time for 1,300. His opponent folded and Loera took down the pot.

Jacob Mitich opened to 500 from early positon and was called by the player on the button and the big blind.

The flop came {6-Hearts}{5-Spades}{2-Diamonds} and it was checked to Mitich, who bet 1,200. Both his opponents quickly folded, prompting Mitich to flip up his {2-Spades}{2-Hearts}.

"This is the first time I've flopped a set in a long time!" Mitich exclaimed as he collected the pot.

Mitich, who took down Event #6: $400 Monster Triple Stack just yesterday, will be looking to make another deep run in today's tournament.
