RunGood Ambassador Ryan Tepen Leads Surviving Day 1a Players

Level 13 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Ryan Tepen
Ryan Tepen

The RunGood Poker Series Horseshoe Casino in Council Bluffs, Iowa, which took place just across the river from Omaha, Nebraska, kicked off their headline event on Friday night. Day 1a of the $675 buy-in, $100,000 guaranteed Main Event surpassed expectations by attracting 149 entries, nearly meeting its guarantee – something that will no doubt happen as two starting flights will take place on Saturday.

After 13 levels of play, just 24 players remained with RunGood Ambassador Ryan Tepen and his chip stack of 330,000 leading the way. Tepen, who is fresh off winning his second World Series of Poker Circuit ring, amassed his stack throughout the day while sipping on a steady stream of vodka in sugar-free energy drink spiked with cherries. It proved to be a recipe for success as he was the only RunGood Ambassador to bag and tag.

"Way above average," Tepen told PokerNews when asked how he ran on Day 1a. "I wouldn't have made it through the night without running well."

Tepen took over the chip lead for the first time in Level 9 (600/1,200/200) when Justin Baker got his short stack all in preflop against Tepen, who was in the big blind, and the player in the small blind. The {2-Spades}{5-Hearts}{8-Clubs} flop inspired back-and-forth raising from the two active players, and when all was said and done Tepen was all in and at risk for his stack of 80,700.

Tepen: {5-Clubs}{5-Spades}
Small Blind: {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds}
Baker: {k-Hearts}{q-Clubs}

Tepen had flopped a set to crack aces, and he was awarded the pot after the {8-Diamonds} blanked on the turn followed by the {2-Diamonds} on the river. After that, local lawyer Joe Thornton steamrolled his way to the chip lead, but a late-night clash with Tepen vaulted the Missourian to the top of the counts.

While Tepen represented well, many of their teammates failed to survive the night including Bernard Lee, Jordan Morgan, Jamie Kerstetter, Bryan Campanello, Clint Tolbert, and Joe Hebda.

Others to fall were MSPT Wisconsin State Poker Champion Ben Wiora; Wisconsinites Josh Reichard and Dan Almerli; World Series of Poker bracelet winner Eric Rodawig; and RunGood Downstream champ Saied Moradi, who suffered a particularly bad beat to bust.

It happened in Level 7 (400/800/100) when Terry "Papa" Karn limped from early position and Moradi raised to 3,000 from the button. Karn then three-bet to 5,800, and Moradi responded with an all-in four-bet to 10,750. Karn thought for a few moments and then announced a call.

Karn: {a-Spades}{6-Diamonds}
Moradi: {a-Clubs}{q-Clubs}

Moradi was in great shape to double, but not after the flop came down {6-Spades}{10-Spades}{3-Hearts} to give Karn the lead with a pair of sixes. Neither the {9-Hearts} turn nor {6-Hearts} river helped Moradi, and he was eliminated from the tournament while Karn went on to bag 73,000. Moradi, as well as many of the Day 1a casualties, will no doubt take another shot in one of the two remaining flights.

The Main Event, which will award the eventual winner a nice payday as well as a $10,000 seat into the 2015 World Series of Poker Main Event, will continue at on Saturday with 1b kicking off at 12:00 p.m. local time. Day 1c will follow at 7 p.m. The plan is to play a dozen 30-minute levels, so be sure to check back then for all the latest and greatest from the RunGood Poker Series Horseshoe Council Bluffs.

Get to Know Run Good Team Pro Ryan Tepen

Level 12 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Ryan Tepen
Ryan Tepen

Ryan Tepen, who is doing quite well here on Day 1a, began playing poker in college when his fraternity brother introduced him to the game in a free bar league.

"A year later, four members of The Crew came into our bar league doing a charity for breast cancer. I became friends with them, and started playing online after watching them play for hours," Tepen says. "After a trip to PCA my senior year in college, I decided to pursue it professionally after college. Bouncing in and out as a semi professional, I finally went full time into poker in 2012."

Tepen has amassed $572,411 in live earnings, with his biggest score coming in June 2013 when he finished runner-up to Ana Marquez in the Hollywood Poker Open $2,500 Main Event in Vegas for $197,806. He also won a 2012 LAPC $125 No-Limit Hold'em Rebuy tournament for $50,025, and finished ninth in the 2015 WSOP Circuit $1,675 Main Event at Choctaw Durant for $34,981.

"There have been many challenges and obstacles throughout the years, but with a great group of friends, I have been able to fight through adversity and continue to do what I love as my job" Tepen adds. "As far as poker goes, I've worked long and hard to be good at every form of poker, so I'm more of a mixed game player."

A big hand just went down at Table 31, one that sent RunGood Ambassador Ryan Tepen into the chip lead.

We missed the early part of the hand, but we do know Justin Baker got his short stack all in preflop against Tepen, who was in the big blind, and the player in the small blind. The {2-Spades}{5-Hearts}{8-Clubs} flop inspired back-and-forth raising from the two active players, and when all was said and done Tepen was all in and at risk for his stack of 80,700.

Is Jonathan Gaviao Team Run Good's Best Hope in Council Bluffs

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Jonathan Gaviao
Jonathan Gaviao

Jonathan Gaviao, a 23 year old from Lewisville, Texas., plays mostly play cash games, though he has been playing more tournaments as of late. Speaking of which, back in Feb. 2013, he finished 13th in the World Series of Poker Circuit Harrah's Tunica Main Event for $12,537.

So how did the Texas boy learn to play? According to him, it happened back in high school when some friends introduced him to Texas hold'em. He started playing $5 home games, and he immediately became hooked by the strategy element.

"A few years later, I began attending Texas A&M University. After the first semester there, my parents informed me that they no longer could afford to put me through college. This was when poker started taking a serious role in my life," Gaviao explains. "Through poker I was able to build a bankroll and continue attending the college I so dearly love. A few years later, I decided to take some time off from college to do some missionary work, cross some adventures off of my bucket list, and try this poker thing out for a while. I have been very blessed to have such a supporting family. My goal is to love people well and to simply keep improving."

Moradi No Longer Running Good

Level 7 : 400/800, 100 ante
Saied Moradi
Saied Moradi

Terry "Papa" Karn got off to a hot start today, but his chips dwindled in the last couple of levels. That said, he still had a bigger stack than RunGood Poker Series Downstream champ Saied Moradi.

In a recent hand, Karn limped from early position and Moradi raised to 3,000 from the button. Karn then three-bet to 5,800, and Moradi responded with an all-in four-bet to 10,750. Karn thought for a few moments and then announced a call.

Karn: {a-Spades}{6-Diamonds}
Moradi: {a-Clubs}{q-Clubs}

Moradi was in great shape to double, but not after the flop came down {6-Spades}{10-Spades}{3-Hearts} to give Karn the lead with a pair of sixes. Neither the {9-Hearts} turn nor {6-Hearts} river helped Moradi, and he was eliminated from the tournament.

Meanwhile, RunGood Ambassador Joe Hebda was also sent to the rail.

Anderson Makes the Right Call to Send Kerstetter to the Rail

Level 5 : 200/400, 50 ante
Jamie Kerstetter
Jamie Kerstetter

We happened upon Table 41 with a big hand already in progress.

There was around 14,000 in the pot and a board reading {j-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}{q-Hearts}{9-Spades} when RunGood Ambassador Jamie Kerstetter moved all in for her last 17,000 or so. Kyle Anderson was on the button and hit the tank. He lifted his cards up, put them back down, and at times looked as if he was going to fold.

"Call," he said seemingly out of nowhere.

Kerstetter began to stand up and tabled her {k-Hearts}{a-Diamonds} for kings. She knew it was no good though, and she was right as Anderson excitedly revealed the {a-Hearts}{a-Spades}.

"I knew you had aces," Kerstetter said with a smile before collecting her things and exiting the tournament floor. She indicated she may return yet tonight, but if not we'll for sure see her tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Kerstetter's fellow RunGood Ambassador, Jordan Morgan, has also been eliminated from the tournament.

Meet Run Good Pro Jamie Kerstetter

Level 4 : 150/300, 25 ante
Jamie Kerstetter
Jamie Kerstetter

Jamie started playing poker in 2002 while attending college at Rutgers and began taking the game more seriously while earning her law degree at the University of Michigan Law School. She left her legal career behind to pursue an online poker career that was grinded to a halt by Black Friday. She moved to Mexico and played high stakes tournaments as "AndTheLawWon." She returned to the US occasionally for live tournaments, placing 12th in the 2012 Borgata WPT Main Event for over $44,000, followed by a 22nd place finish in the following Borgata WPT.

She makes training videos for Tournament Poker Edge, and enjoys coaching players one-on-one in her spare time. She was featured in Bluff Magazine's article, "Leading Ladies: 10 to Watch," and actively promotes women in poker as a member of the "Grindettes." She is ecstatic to be living in New Jersey again, one of three states where online poker is now legal, and is proud to be a Team Pro for partypoker, one of the leading US sites.

Kerstetter is representing Run Good here in Council Bluffs, and we'll be sure to keep an eye on her all weekend long.

Meet Run Good Pro Bryan Campanello

Level 3 : 100/200, 0 ante
Bryan Campanello
Bryan Campanello

Bryan is 21 years old from Southlake, Texas. Lucky enough to grow up in the Moneymaker era, he started playing small stake poker games with friends in seventh grade and got hooked on poker after watching the WSOP Main Event on ESPN.

"Poker fuels my competitive nature, much like sports and other competitive events I enjoy. My goal is to continue to improve, make deep runs in tournaments and be the best player I possibly can," says Campanello. "Currently, I am a part time student at UNT studying Political Science. I am trying to balance college and poker for now, because it is a goal of mine to obtain a college degree. The concept of having others tell me what to do or where to be at a specific time has never fit my personality. Poker gives me the opportunity to be my own boss and pick my own hours."

He went on to say: "I feel very lucky to have found this game at such a young age. I started playing more seriously online when I was 18 and was fortunate to also play quite a bit of live poker in 18+ casinos in Oklahoma and Florida. I realized poker can give me the opportunity not to work in an office and the freedom to travel the world whenever I want. In my young career, I have already played poker in Ireland, the Bahamas and across the United States. The combination of poker events, travel and working on my game has easily become the full focus in my life."

Campanello is in action here in Council Bluffs, so rest assured we'll be keeping an eye on him here in the live blog.

Welcome to Day 1a of the RunGood Poker Series Horseshoe Council Bluffs

RunGood Council Bluffs
RunGood Council Bluffs

The RunGood Poker Series is here at Horseshoe Casino in Council Bluffs, Iowa for the very first time. The property, which sits just across the river from Omaha, Nebraska has been hosting side events the past couple of days, but tonight at 7 p.m. local time the headline event, a $100K guaranteed $675 buy-in Main Event, will kick off with the first of three starting flights.

The Main Event, which will award the eventual winner a nice payday as well as a $10,000 seat into the 2015 World Series of Poker Main Event, will host two more flights on Saturday, with 1b kicking off at 12:00 p.m. local time and 1c to follow at 7 p.m. The plan for all three flights, which will begin players with 20,000 starting stacks and feature 30-minute levels, is to play 12 levels before bagging and tagging.

The survivors will then return at 12:00 p.m. local time on Sunday to play down to a winner. For Day 2, Levels 13-21 will be 45 minutes long, and from there on out will be extended to one hour.

The stop has already proven to be an exciting affair. Things kicked off on Wednesday night when Tana Karn, the president of RunGood Gear, hosted a happy hour at Whiskey Roadhouse. Joining him were a slew of RunGood Ambassadors including Bernard Lee, Jordan Morgan, Jamie Kerstetter, Joe Hebda, Justin Gardenhire, Bryan Campanello, and Jonathan Gavaio, all of who are expected to join the Main Event fray.

“We’re ready to bring another great season of poker to players in 2015," said Founder and President of RunGoodGear.com Tana Karn. "We always have an amazing group that comes out with the priority to have fun. If you haven’t been to one of our series yet make sure you mark your calendar for one today.”

It was also on Wednesday night that the first tournament, $125 buy-in RG Bounty, took place. The event was a jovial affair and saw 181 entrants turn out. In the end Kevin Shimp emerged as the last man standing, a feat that earned him $4,388. Other RunGood Council Bluffs winners include Pen Dorhi, who topped a field of 260 players to win the RG DeepStack for $7,000, and Mark Fink of Sioux Falls, who won the RG Pot-Limit Omaha event for $3,113 after a four-way chop.

For today's Main Event, we're expecting some players to give the RunGood Ambassadors a run for their money. Ben Wiora, who recently topped a field of 463 players to win the Wisconsin State Poker Championship at Ho-Chunk Gaming Wisconsin Dells for $114,512, made the trip alongside fellow Wisconsinite Dan Almerli. We've also spotted former MSPT champ Josh Reichard, so there's certainly going to be some stiff competition.

Cards will be in the air in a few hours, so stay tuned for all the action from Day 1a of the RunGood Poker Series Horseshoe Council Bluffs
