Paul Matzinger Leads the Pack After Day 1b of the RGPS Horseshoe Council Bluffs Golden Ticket Main Event

Level 14 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Paul Matzinger
Paul Matzinger

It was another cold and blustery day outside of Horseshoe Council Bluffs, but there was plenty of hot action warming up the felt during Day 1b of the RunGood Poker Series (RGPS) $420 Golden Ticket Main Event. Another 294 players entered the action, which with the 211 from yesterday's Day 1a flight, brought the total number of entrants to 505 for the two Day 1 flights.

After just over thirteen levels of play, 47 players managed to reach the end of the day, and Paul Matzinger was able to bag up 400,000 chips to take the chip lead for the flight, and his stack is just barely behind the 412,500 of Day 1a chip leader Shawn Stevenson. "It's gonna happen tomorrow!" Matzinger told PokerNews as he took his leave from the poker room, and with a stack of 100 big blinds, Matzinger sits in prime position to take down the Main Event and claim the Golden Ticket for a seat in the All-Stars ProAm in December.

Other notables who bagged up stacks in today's flight include Matthew Dillon (250,000), Scott Buller (171,000), Paul Strohm (131,000) and Cash Carpenter (117,000).

On the other end of the spectrum, Kenneth Baime couldn't hold on to the run good from winning Event #1: $250 Black Chip Bounty, and was unable to secure a bag for Day 2. Others that failed to advance include Mark Fink, Jon Stanfield, and Mo Nuwwarah.

Day 2 Agenda

The remaining 77 players will return on Sunday, November 14th at 10 a.m. to play down to a champion. The day will begin with 18:18 remaining in Level 14, and levels will be 45-minutes in length through Level 21, and increase to an hour in length starting with Level 22. Full payout information and a seat draw will be posted when they are released by the poker room.

PokerNews will be on hand from start to finish tomorrow, so be sure to stay tuned to see who will walk away with one of the last All-Stars ProAm seats available before the exclusive event kicks off in December!

Jose Mendoza: {k-Spades}{k-Hearts}
Zach Davidson: {a-Spades}{k-Diamonds}

Mendoza managed to fade the ace on a {10-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{2-Hearts}{8-Spades}{6-Clubs} runout to earn a vital double.

Matthew Dillon
Matthew Dillon

Matthew Dillon three-bet shoved for 37,000 over an open from a player in the hijack, and the hijack made the call to put him at risk.

Matthew Dillon: {4-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}
Opponent: {a-Clubs}{j-Spades}

Dillon managed to survive the flip on a {q-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{8-Diamonds} runout to earn the double.

"Back up to where I was before!" Dillon said after the hand.

Mendoza Takes a Big Hit

Level 13 : 2,000/3,000, 3,000 ante
Jose Mendoza
Jose Mendoza

Jose Mendoza checked a {6-Clubs}{4-Spades}{8-Clubs} flop from the small blind, and Zach Davidson overbet the 25,000 pot with an all-in shove for 71,000. Mendoza called.

Zach Davidson: {9-Hearts}{9-Clubs}
Jose Mendoza: {k-Clubs}{5-Clubs}

Mendoza flopped a gutshot, a flush draw and held an over to Davidson's pair of nines, but the {3-Hearts} turn and {5-Hearts} river left Davidson in front, and forced Mendoza to part with a healthy chunk of his stack in the process.

Level 12 : 1,500/2,500, 2,500 ante
Josue Rosas
Josue Rosas

Josue Rosas had an opponent in the hijack all-in and at risk for their last 40,000, and Rosas held the goods:

Opponent: {j-Hearts}{j-Clubs}
Josue Rosas: {a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}

Rosas held the blades, and they held on the {5-Clubs}{7-Spades}{6-Spades} flop. The {9-Diamonds} turn brought a few chop outs, but the {10-Diamonds} river sealed the deal and eliminated the hijack.

Griffith Doubles; Mendoza Mashing

Level 12 : 1,500/2,500, 2,500 ante
Barrett Griffith
Barrett Griffith

Barrett Griffith checked a {k-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} flop over to an opponent in middle position, who bet 8,000. Griffith check-raised all in for 29,400, and the middle-position player tanked for a little over a minute before making the call.

Barrett Griffith: {a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}
Opponent: {8-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}

Griffith's top pair, top kicker netted a double after the {q-Clubs} turn and {3-Hearts} river failed to improve his opponent.

Right next to Griffith, the towering stack of Jose Mendoza stood out, and Griffith told PokerNews, "I gifted him those chips," shortly after the hand.

Carpenter's Set Scoops a Monster

Level 11 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Cash Carpenter
Cash Carpenter

A player raised to 6,000 from early position, and Ben Beegle called in middle positon. Cash Carpenter called in the cutoff, and the button three-bet shoved for 16,000. The early-position player, Beegle and Carpenter all called.

On the {2-Spades}{6-Clubs}{j-Hearts} flop, the early-position player bet 25,000, and Beegle tank-folded. Carpenter shoved for 54,000, and the early-position player called.

Button: {a-Spades}{k-Spades}
Early Position: {a-Clubs}{j-Spades}
Cash Carpenter: {2-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}

Carpenter's set of deuces held a commanding lead, and he improved to a full house on the {6-Spades} turn to officially eliminate the button. The early-position player could still win if another six or jack fell on the river, but the harmless {q-Clubs} fell instead, sending the biggest pot of the day so far over to Carpenter.

May Avoids Mayday

Level 10 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante
Cory May
Cory May

Cory May jammed for 9,800 from early position, and the cutoff three-bet shoved for 30,000, chasing off the rest of the field.

Cory May: {5-Spades}{5-Clubs}
Opponent: {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}

May's prospects looked dim after the {7-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{k-Hearts} flop paired up the cutoff, but May locked the hand up when the {5-Hearts} fell on the turn, giving him a set and rendering the {7-Clubs} river moot other than to improve May further to a full house.

"I had the best hand preflop!" May said with a sheepish grin after the hand.

Ames Catches a Bluff

Level 10 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante
John Ames
John Ames

John Ames checked the {4-Clubs}{9-Spades}{8-Clubs} flop from the big blind, and his opponent on the button bet 7,000 into a pot of around 9,000. Ames called.

Both players checked the {6-Hearts} turn, and the {2-Clubs} fell on the river. Ames checked, and the button bet 11,000. Ames snap-called, and after the button showed {a-Clubs}{j-Diamonds} for ace-high, Ames turned over {q-Clubs}{5-Clubs} for a flush and the winner.

Cash Carpenter raised to 3,500 from under the gun, and Tim Rystrom three-bet shoved for 29,400 from middle position. Action folded back to Carpenter, who quickly called.

Tim Rystrom: {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades}
Cash Carpenter: {q-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}

Carpenter faded the overs on an {8-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{2-Spades}{9-Hearts}{6-Hearts} runout to win the flip and eliminate Rystrom.
