Rick Block Leads Final Table of Seneca Fall Poker Classic Main Event

Level 24 : 12,000/24,000, 3,000 ante

The 2014 Seneca Fall Poker Classic Main Event continued Sunday with 65 of the original 263 entries returning to the balcony of the Seneca Niagara Hotel & Casino. After nearly 14 hours on the felt, the day ended with nine players eyeing the trophy and the $57,736.

Rick Block is on top heading into the final day. Block grinded out a short stack for most of Day 2 but went on a rush with two tables remaining, working it up from 250,000 to almost 2.5 million when play came to a close.

Among those joining Block at the final table are Joe Ciffa, Andre Smith and 19-year-old Veerab Zakarian, who needs a take a school exam at 8 a.m. Monday morning before driving back to Niagara Falls to play for the title.

Only the top 24 places were paid in this tournament, meaning more than half of those returning on Sunday would go home empty-handed. Among those who failed to make the money were Lou Tomassi, DJ MacKinnon, Kyle Gauchat and Ronny D'Grillo, who landed on the bubble. D'Grillo moved all in for his last 34,500 from early position. Matt Dubuc, Anthony Sgroi and Rick Block all called and checked it down on a jack-high board. D'Grillo tabled {A-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds} but he was bested by Sgroi's pocket kings.

From there, Dan Wagner, Scott Gaddi, Chris Gras, Vincent Palma and Robert Donegan hit the rail short of the final table. Donegan was among with leaders with 18 left but made a timely misstep against Joe Ciffa that removed him from the tournament.

Donegan opened to 50,000 from early position, Joe Ciffa called from middle position and Thomas MacKenzie called on the button. The dealer fanned the {3-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} flop and Donnegan made a huge overshove for 464,000. Ciffa snap-called, and MacKenzie folded.

Ciffa showed {A-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds} for an ace-high flush, and Donagean sheepishly tabled his {K-Hearts}{J-Diamonds} as he was was only drawing to a miraculous chop. The {Q-Hearts} and {10-Clubs} completed the board and Donegan made his way out of the room.

Ciffa held the chip lead until Block completely took over the tournament, eventually eliminating Dean Metzger in 10th place to finish the day with nearly 2.5 million in chips.

Block won an event at the Seneca Fall Poker Classic last year and will look to add another title on Monday. Our final table overage begins at noon ET so be sure to follow the updates right here. See you then!

Dean Metzger Eliminated in 10th Place ($4,388)

Level 24 : 12,000/24,000, 3,000 ante
Dean Metzger
Dean Metzger

Joseph [Removed:340] opened from under the gun, Rick Block called from directly behind, and action folded to Dean Metzger in the big blind. He shoved for 195,000, and both players called.

Block and [Removed:340] checked the {4-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}{8-Clubs} flop, and then [Removed:340] checked again on the {9-Spades} turn. Block bet 200,000 and [Removed:340] called, bringing the {6-Spades} on the river. [Removed:340] check-called a bet of 100,000.

"Straight," said Block as he tabled the {Q-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}. Metzger and [Removed:340] both mucked, and Metzger was eliminated in 10th place.

That brings an end to Day 2 of the Main Event. Be sure to watch for the official final table chip counts and a recap of the day!

With the board showing {3-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{9-Clubs}{5-Spades} and more than 500,000 already in the pot, Joe Ciffa checked and Rick Block fired 235,000. Ciffa sat in his seat for more than a minute, cut out some chips from his stack and counted them out, but then flicked his cards into the muck.

Block whipped his {K-Diamonds}{J-Clubs} onto the felt to show off his king-high. He is gradually increasing his lead with every hand he plays at Table 12.

Chris Gras
Chris Gras

Anthony Sgroi opened from middle position and Chris Gras shoved for 134,000 from the button. Action folded to Veeran Zakarian in the big blind, but Sgroi acted out of turn by calling Gras' shove. The dealer explained that Sgroi was committed to call Gras' shove if Zakarian folded, but the action would change of Zakarian called or raised.

Zakarian announced all in and Sgroi quickly folded, and the hands were turned up.

Gras: {A-Spades}{J-Diamonds}
Zakarian: {A-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}

Zakarian found aces again and once again they held through the {4-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}{K-Hearts}{J-Clubs}{7-Clubs} board, sending Gras out in 12th place.

Chris Gras opened from the hijack, Veerab Zakarian flatted from the small blind and Vincent Palma three-bet from the big blind. Gras folded, but Zakarian woke up with a shove for around 350,000. Palma called off for a little less.

Zakarian: {A-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}
Palma: {A-Hearts}{K-Clubs}

Two monster hands in the blinds, but it was Palma needing help and he failed to get any on the {8-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} board.

With two eliminations at Table 12 we're now down to our final 18. After Randy Lingenfelter busted Tim Silman in 20th place, chip leader Thomas MacKenzie took care of Scott Gaddi in 19th.

Gaddi was all in and ahead preflop with the {Q-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds} against MacKenzie's {K-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}, but the {8-Spades}{A-Clubs}{K-Hearts}{J-Hearts}{5-Hearts} board gave MacKenzie two pair and the win.

We'll have the new seat draw up shortly.
