Rick Block Leads Final Six After Day 2 of the 2016 Western New York Poker Challenge Main Event

Level 24 : 12,000/24,000, 3,000 ante
Rick Block
Rick Block

The field played down from 50 players to just six on Day 2 of the 2016 Western New York Poker Challenge Main Event on Sunday, and Rick Block will start on top in the battle for the title on Monday.

The 28-player money bubble burst part way through the day when Block cracked Timothy Andruschat's kings with a weak ace and the playdown to an unofficial final table of 10 went rather fast.

By the time they got there, Mike "The Mayor" Rellinger got short and fell in 10th. Soon after, Jeremy Halaska bowed out in ninth and Jeff Wells gifted Block the lead, shoving second pair into Block's set of aces to exit in eighth.

The final six was reached soon after when Frank Dellaria lost a classic race with big slick to Dan Wagner's queens. Wagner built a big stack by making a flush against Joseph Elia's flopped top two pair in a huge pot at the final two tables, and after busting Dellaria, he will come into the final six just a handful of chips behind Block.

Ray LaRouech, Charles Johnson, Joseph Reichenbacher, and Newton Graziano round out the final six, and are all within striking distance of the two leaders, but it'll be Block and Wagner's names on the marquee when things get rolling inside the Niagara Falls Poker Room at 12 p.m. local time on Monday.

Block's record at Seneca Niagara speaks for itself. He won the 2014 Seneca Fall Poker Classic Main Event and binked a prelim at the 2015 Summer Slam. With $159,594 in career tournament earnings, Block also owns a World Series of Poker Circuit ring.

In the meantime, the affable Wagner is a respected cash-game player in the Niagara Falls area with $171,962 in career tournament earnings, including a career best $109,114 score booked when he finished second in the $1,100 event at the 2015 Fallsview Poker Classic, across the bridge in Canada.

Everyone in the final six is guaranteed at least a $9,907 payday, and there are five-figure scores awaiting each of the final five. However, all eyes will surely be on the top prize of $52,768 when they return to the felt to play down to a champion.

PokerNews will be there from start to finish, and you can follow the fight for the 2016 Western New York Poker Challenge Main Event title right here when it all kicks of at noon local time on Monday.

Frank Dellaria Eliminated in 7th Place ($7,754)

Level 24 : 12,000/24,000, 3,000 ante
Frank Dellaria
Frank Dellaria

Frank Dellaria made it 66,000 and Dan Wagner three-bet to 141,000.

It folded back to Dellaria and he shipped it in. Wagner called with {q-Clubs}{q-Diamonds} and Dellaria was in a classic race for his tournament life with the {a-Hearts}{k-Clubs}.

The board rolled out {6-Hearts}{6-Spades}{6-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}, taking Dellaria with it.

With his elimination they are now down to just six remaining and have halted play for the night. They will return Monday at 12 p.m. local time to play down to a champion. Chip counts and a full recap of the day's play will follow.

Jeff Wells Eliminated in 8th Place ($6,031)

Level 24 : 12,000/24,000, 3,000 ante
Jeff Wells
Jeff Wells

Rick Block raised the button and Jeff Wells defended his big blind.

The flop came down {a-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds} and after Wells checked, Block continued for 41,000. Wells shoved way over the top and Block called instantly, showing the {a-Clubs}{a-Spades} for top set.

Wells had just the {j-Hearts}{5-Hearts} and although the {3-Hearts} turn gave him a gutshot, the {3-Clubs} river filled up Block and sent him to the rail eighth.

The (Unofficial) Final Table Is Set

Level 22 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Jonathan Shah
Jonathan Shah

Thomas Mader ran second pair into Joseph Reichenbacher nut straight to exit 12th.

Seconds later, Dan Wagner shoved blind from the small blind into short stack Jonathan Shah in the big. Shah called off with queen-high, but Wagner somehow had pocket aces to send him home 11th.

With that, they have combined to one table of ten and the official final table of nine will be set with one more elimination.

Wagner Gets There

Level 21 : 6,000/12,000, 2,000 ante
Dan Wagner
Dan Wagner

Dan Wagner opened to 26,000 and both blinds called, including Joseph Elia in the small.

The {k-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} flop checked to Wagner and he continued. Elia raised to 110,000, and after the big blind folded, Wagner three-bet to 300,000. Elia shoved for a couple hundred thousand more and Wagner called off with the monster draw on {a-Hearts}{j-Hearts}. Elia had top two with the {K-Clubs}{Q-Spades}.

The {a-Spades} turn gave Wagner more outs and the {10-Hearts} river made him a flush, giving him 1.7 million in chips, and the big lead, as Elia bowed out 17th.

Wagner On Top

Level 20 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Dan Wagner
Dan Wagner

Dan Wagner was the player who busted Bob Kiehl, making kings full of jacks on the river against Kiehl's three kings with an ace kicker.

As a result, it's now Wagner who leads in the final 19, sitting on close to 900,000 already.

The Ends of the Spectrum; The End of the Bubble

Level 18 : 3,000/6,000, 500 ante
Jeff Wells
Jeff Wells

The bubble has now popped but not before Jeff Wells crushed it, moving into chip lead position.

Mike Steinhauser looked to be the shortest stack in the room, but held on to a less-than-ten big blind stack to guarantee at least a min-cash when the bubble popped at another table.

Timothy Andruschat was the unlucky player to say goodbye 28th, running pocket kings into Rick Block's weak ace. He became the bubble boy when Block spiked an ace, and as they redraw for seats at the final three nine-handed tables, Block has moved up the leader board significantly.

Visbisky Moves Ahead

Level 16 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Alex Visbisky
Alex Visbisky

Alex Visbisky has moved firmly into the lead now after taking a chunk out of Andy Ranaletti.

Visbisky opened for 9,000 from early position, and after Rick Block called, Ranaletti defended his big blind. They all checked the {j-}{9-}{7-} flop, but Ranaletti fired 15,000 at the {a-} turn. Only Visbisky called and when Ranaletti checked the {q-} river, Visbisky bet 48,000.

Ranaletti called with two pair aces and jacks, but Visbisky had two queens, taking the pot with a rivered set.

Day 2 of the 2016 Western New York Poker Challenge Main Event Starst Now!

2016 WNYPC
2016 WNYPC

Day 2 of the 2016 Western New York Poker Challenge Main Event will go off inside the Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino just a few blocks from Niagara Falls, beginning at 11 a.m. this morning.

After two starting days drew a total of 244 entries, just 50 players pushed through and will battle it out on the felt today, looking to book a seat at the area's most prestigious final table.

Following up on his third-place finish on the 2015 Seneca Fall Poker Classic Main Event this past November, top local tourney grinder Alex Visbisky made quads twice and was on the right side of an aces-over-kings cooler to set the pace on Day 1a, becoming the only player to bag over 300,000.

However, a bigger field on Day 1b produced three others with as much or more. In fact, thanks to a set-over-set debacle late in the day that saw Chris Meyers give away heaps with an ill-advised river shove, Orchard Park, NY's own Jeff Kandefer will bring the chip lead into the start of Day 2 on a massive 425,500.

Mike Rellinger also played the field like a fiddle, switching gears constantly on the way to bagging 300,000-plus, and Jim Burkett ran hot longer than even he expected, hanging on to 324,000 by the time play ended.

The group just under also includes several venerable Seneca grinders like Jeff Wells, Joseph Elia, Andy Ranaletti, World Series of Poker bracelet winner Greg Ostrander and multiple Seneca Niagara title holder Rick Block, who are all expected to have at least some say in how this thing shakes out today.

Plus, 2015 Seneca Fall Classic Main Event champ Kurtis Boutelle, local cash king Dan Wagner and the always dangerous Pat Tighe and Blake Napierala are among those who still have chips and chairs.

It should be an exciting day of poker here as they play into the money and beyond and PokerNews will be on hand for all the action.

Stay tuned right here to see how the 2016 Western New York Poker Challenge Main Event contenders separate themselves from the pretenders.
