Mathias Siljander Bags the Chip Lead on Day 1 of the Tallinn Summer Showdown Main Event

Level 8 : 400/800, 800 ante
Mathias Siljander

The third edition of the Tallinn Summer Showdown €1,100 Main Event hosted by Olympic Park Casino and Hilton Tallinn Park can already be labeled a success with 168 entrants ponying up the €1,100 buy-in.

This is already three more than the record turnout of 165 entrants last year with players still allowed to late register and reenter until the start of the second blind level of Friday's Day 2.

Players began today's deep-stacked action with 30,000 in chips and battled it out for eight hour-long blinds levels.

More than half of today's field survived today's action with 85 players joining those that late register tomorrow. Finnish players are thus far dominating the top of the chip counts with nine out of the twelve players that bagged at least 100,000 in chips coming from Finland including the Day 1 chip leader Mathias Siljander with 241,900.

Siljander captured the chip lead midway through the day after he won a big hand with kings against the ace-queen held by Masse Mirza.

Closest on Siljander's tail are Tapio Vihakas (209,200), Riko Piiroinen (166,800), Kelly Limonova (137,600), and Jussi Mattila (137,000). With two hours left to play and sitting on a stack of around 40,000, Mattila announced to all those within listening distance that he was going to bag exactly 137,000. Mattila had slightly more than this but lost a few chips before the end of the day.

Day 2 of the Tallinn Summer Showdown Main Event will kick off at 12 p.m. local time tomorrow with blinds at 500/1,000 and a big blind ante of 1,000. PokerNews will post starting seat assignments before the action resumes.

As was the case today, the PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be back on the floor to provide complete coverage tomorrow and beyond until a winner is declared.

Lindberg Cracks Sootla's Aces

Level 7 : 300/600, 600 ante
Ranno Sootla
Ranno Sootla

Ranno Sootla four-bet Ingemar Andreas Lindberg to 12,600 preflop and got a call. He then open-jammed after the {10-Spades}{5-Clubs}{k-Clubs} came on the flop more than covering the approximately 20,000 his opponent had behind and Lindberg quickly called.

Sootla turned over {a-Hearts}{a-Spades} and was drawing very thin with Lindberg flopping top set with {10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}. Neither the {8-Clubs} on the turn nor the {9-Clubs} on the river were able to get Sootla back in the hand and Lindberg doubled up.

Siljander Wins Big Pot with Kings

Level 7 : 300/600, 600 ante
Mathias Siljander

Mathias Siljander and Masse Mirza just played a huge pot where all the chips were in preflop. It all began innocently enough with Tomas Sujeta opening to 1,500 from early position. Mirza three-bet to 3,500 from middle position and Siljander, who was getting a massage, four-bet to 6,000 from one seat over.

Sujeta got out of the way before Mirza four-bet to 15,000.

"How much do you play?" Siljander asked before he jammed for over 120,000.

"You know I have it," Siljander said before he asked the dealer, "Do you want to see my cards?"

A minute passed by before Mirza called off his stack of around 65,000.

Mathias Siljander: {k-Clubs}{k-Spades}
Masse Mirza: {a-Spades}{q-Clubs}

"Good luck," Siljander said to his opponent.

Siljander remained ahead the entire way as the {8-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{9-Spades}{10-Clubs}{6-Hearts} ran out on the board and after the hand was the chip leader with a stack of 200,000.

Koplimaa Doubles Off Loiv

Level 6 : 200/400, 400 ante
Markku Koplimaa
Markku Koplimaa

Markku Koplimaa just doubled up from the big blind to around 50,000 in chips against a hand involving Andres Loiv who was under the gun. The hand got exciting on the turn when Koplimaa was at risk with about 18,000 remaining with the {4-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{k-Clubs}{6-Hearts} on the board.

Koplimaa held {k-Spades}{6-Spades} for two pair and just needed to fade an ace to survive and double with his opponent holding {a-}{k-}. He won the hand after the safe {7-Diamonds} completed the board on the river.

Welcome to Day 1 of the Summer Showdown Main Event

Hilton Tallinn Park
Hilton Tallinn Park

The Summer Showdown has returned for its third edition at the Hilton Tallinn Park and Olympic Park Casino for the biggest poker festival in the summer in Northern Europe.

The schedule features something for everyone with 36 action-packed events and cash games running 24 hours a day. The highlight of the festival, the Summer Showdown €1,100 Main Event, kicks off the first of its four days of action today at 12 p.m EEST.

The Main Event boasts an amazing structure with players kicking off the action with 30,000 in chips and blinds increasing every 60 minutes. Players are scheduled to play eight blind levels today and can re-enter an unlimited amount of times up until the late-registration period closes at the conclusion of the first blind level of tomorrow's Day 2.

Finland's Jukka Koskela won the inaugural Main Event in 2017 when he finished on top of 127 entrants to win the €33.200 top prize.

The trophy stayed on home soil last year when Estonia's Jargo Alavali won this event last year for €33,077 after agreeing to a three-way final table deal with Tuomas Nurmi (second - €27,518) and Rauno "Estonian Jesus" Tahvonen (third - €29,905).

This year the event is scheduled to be bigger than ever before as the first two days of the festival have witnessed a record turnout for the event.
